Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented Nov. 26, 1912.

Application filed September 2, 1911. Serial No. 647,446.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSEPH PAYNE, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and resident of Melrose, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cases for I-Iypodermic Needles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object to provide a case for holding and excluding air and dampness from hypodermic needles and for preventing the rusting of the points of the needles.

The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.

Of the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification,-Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a needle case embodying my invention; Fig. 2 rep resents a longitudinal section of the same; Fig. 3 represents a section on line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4: represents a sectional view of a modified form of holder embodying my invention.

Referring first to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, 12 represents a block of wood or other suitable material in which are formed a series of pockets 13 each adapted to receive the hub 141 of a hypodermic needle 15. The body is also provided with a cavity 16 communicating with the inner ends of the pockets 13 and containing a filling 17 of cotton or other absorbent material containing Vaseline or other agent for preventing the formation of rust on needle points inserted in the filling. The walls of the pockets 13 are provided with stops adapted to engage the hubs 14 and limit the entrance of the needle points into the filling 17. As here shown, the stops are the outer ends of tapered portions of the pockets, the outer portions of the pockets being of uniform diameter and formed to receive the hubs 1 1 which bear upon the outer extremities of the tapered portions. The pockets l3 and cavity 16 are so proportioned relative to the needles that when the latter are inserted in the pockets the points of the needles project partly but not wholly across the cavity 16 so that the points are embedded in the filling 17 without coming in contact with the wall of the cavity 16. The outer ends of the pockets are sealed by independently removable closures 18 which are preferably pieces of thick paper or cardboard glued to the exterior of the body and adapted to be removed one by one by a knife or other instrument.

The case may be formed as a circular box made in two sections, '12 and 12 as shown by Fig. 4, section 12 containing the pockets 13, and the section l2 forming the cavity for the reception of the filling 17. The case when made in this form is preferably circular.

It will be seen that provision is made for excluding air and dampness from the inclosed needles and preventing the rusting of their points.

I claim:

1. A hypodermic needle case comprising a body having a series of independent pockets each adapted to receive and protect a needle and its hub, a cavity communicating with the inner ends of the pockets, and an absorbent penetrable filling confined in said cavity and adapted to receive and protect the points of hypodermic needles inserted in the pockets, the walls of the pockets having stops adapted to engage the hubs of the needles and limit the entrance of their points into the cavity and filling.

2. A needle case comprising a body having a series of independent pockets each adapted to receive and protect a needle and its hub, a cavity communicating with the inner ends of the pockets, an absorbent penetrable filling in said pockets adapted to receive and protect the points of hypodermic needles inserted in the pockets, and independently removable closures secured to the exterior of the body and covering the outer ends of the pockets.
