Description

' nnrrnn srrrrns PATENT caricia, y
JOHN SEDAJ, OF KNOSHA, WISCONSIN.
EXTENSIBLE TABLE.
Spceiiication of "Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1912.
Original apnlicatoii 4filed April S, 19112, Serial No. 689,101. Divided and this application filed .Tune 22,
ToaZZ whom/it may concern Be it .known that I, Jenn SEDAJ, a subject of the King of Hungary, but who have declared my intention of becoming a citizen oit.' the 'United States, and a resident of the city of Kenosha, county of Kenosha, and ttate of Wisconsin, have invented cer tain. .new and useful Improvements in Extensible Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to extensible tables, and .more specifically to means ,tor releasaloly locking adjacent sections ot' the table together, the present application being a division ofvmy ending application Serial No. 689,101,y tiled April 8th, 1912, for extensible tables.
The object of my invention is the production of locking means as mentioned, which will be simple and economical in construction, means which may be readily and expeditiously manipulated to eiiect locking orunloclring of adjacent sections, and means which will be of high eiiiciency in use.
@ther objects will appear hereinafter.
`"With these objects in view, my invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of partshereina'fter described and claimed.
My invention 'will be more readily understood by referencev to the accompanying drawing forming a part ot' this spccitication, and in Which- Figure' 1 is a perspective view oi an er tensible -table embodying my invention, Fig. 2 1s a partially sectional side eleva,-
. `tion' of the top portions of two adjacent eXtensible sections showing the same locked together, Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section through the adjacent edge portions ot' two connected extension sections, Fig. et is a fragmentary perspective view of the under side of one-of the extension sections .of the table, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one ot'V the locking hook members included -in the construction, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the angular socket members .coperating with said hook members. i
The preferred form of construction, as
Serial No. 705,158.
`adjacent corresponding edges of said table tops.
The table tops i and .4 are reinforced by ymeans of longitudinally extending cleats 6 which are provided upon the under sides of usaid table tops and secured thereto for alinem'ent or registration by suitable securing devices 7. The section 3 is provided at one edge or the top et thereof with outwardly projecting engaging hooks 8 which are adapted to engage sockets 9 formed in angular 4plates l0 which are secured upon three sides of each oi the table tops, there being two socket members l() provided at each edge of the table top for engagement with al corresponding number of engaging members 8 provided upon the top Il. The engaging members 8 are adapted, when engaged with the socket members 10, as clear-ly shown in Fig.- 2, to securely fasten the sections,` together, unlocking of the members 8 in order to disconnect the table sections, being cll'ccted only by elevating the end of the table top which carries the members 8 until the latter release the ei'igaged edge portions ot the socket members, as will be readily understood.
In order to prevent accidental disconncction of the table sections, the cleats (3 at one edge ot the top 4t of the section 3 are extended so that, when the entr-aging members 8 thereof are engaging socclrets 9 vof the section 2, as just described, said ex tended ends of said cleats will engage under the adjacent edge portion of thc top il of section 2 and serve to yieldingly hold the table tops of said sectionsvcoplanar. iVith this arrangement, in' order to disconnect one section from the other, it Will be required in the upward movement of the end of table top' l. carrying the members S (ivhich movementis necessary in order to effect disengagement of the members S, as just described), to flex the adjacent portion of the table top 4J, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. lith this'v ar 1angement then the resiliency of the table top -will serve a's al means of-yieldingly holding the engaging members S of said top in locking engagement With the sockets 9 of the adjacent section.
The projecting ends of the cleats' 6 in 'each section are formed with projecting pins 24.
vided in the opposite extremities of said cleats, as shown in the several views, and
provided in the sides of c'leats 6 for engagement by pins .1l in the event of a section 12 and l2 cooperate With the locking mem'- bers 8 and the sockets 9 in securely fastening the sections together. rlhe 'top of section .3 is provided with socket members l0,` as shown, so as to adapt the same for engagelmentby or connection with another extension section in the same manner as tlrevsections 2 and ti-engage with one another.
`While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification Without departingl from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the desire to avail myself of such' variations and [modifications ,as .come Within the scope of the appended claims. j
Having described my invention, what ,I claim asV neviT and' desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. An l'extensible table comprising a'. plurality of sectionshaving tops adapted to be arranged edgeto edge; means for detach'ably comprising a hook member projecting from one of the edges of thel top of one of said sections adapted to releasably engage a .said socket, substantially as described.
2..,An extensible tablevcomprising a plarality of sections having tops adapted to be Which are adapted toangage recesses 25 'proparticularly'lig. 3, recesses lf2 being als@ being connected with 'one of the lateral edges of another section. The-pins 1l 'and' recesses A exact details of construction set forth, 'butl connecting adjacent sections, said means socket provided in the adjacent edge of theI arranged edge to edge; means lfor detachably connecting adjacent sections, said.
means comprising a hook member projecting from one of the edges 'of the top of one of said sections adapted to releasably engage a socket provided in the ad'accnt edge of the top of the other of said sections; flexible cleats secured upon the under side of the top of each of said sections, corresponding ends of the cleats of one of said sections projecting` from the corresponding table top and engaging under the top of the other of said sections for yieldingly holding said hook member in locking engagement With Said socket, the flexibility of said cleats' permitting of release of said hook member from said socket, the cleats o f one 'of 4said 'sections registering with and `engaging against the cleats ofthe othery section.; and projecting pins provided at the ends of the cleats of one section engaging recesses provided in the adjacent portions of the cleats of the ,other section, substantially as described. i
' 3. A sectional ltable comprising a plu.- rality of sections having tops adapted to bc.arrangededge to edge ;means for detachably connecting adjacentsections, said means` comprising a locking member projecting from one of the edges of the top of one of said sections adapted to releasably engage a socket provided in the adjacent edge of the top of the other of said sections, release of said locking member from saidsocketv being effected by elevation thereof; flexible cleats secured upon the under side of the top ofv 4each of said sections, corresponding ends of the cleats of one of said sections projecting from the corresponding table top andengaging under the ltop of-the other of said sections for yieldingly holding said locking member in locking engagement with said socket, the flexibility of said cleats permitting ofrelease of said locking member from said socket; and pins projecting from the projecting ends of said cleats adapted to releasably engage recesses provided in the adjacent portion of the adjacenty cleats, substantiallyas described. y
4. A sectional table comprising a plurality of sections having tops adapted to be arranged edge to edge; mea/ns for detachably connecting adjacent sections, said means comprising a locking member projecting vfrom one of the edges of the top of one of said sections adapted'to releasably engage a' socket provided in the adjacent edge of the top of the other of said sections, release of said locking member from said socket being effected by elevation thereof; flexible cleats secured upon the vunder side 'of the top of one of said sections projecting from the corrcspondmgtable top and enga ging under the top of the other o f said sections for yieldkingly holding said locking member in locking engagement? with said socket, the flexibiiity of said-cleats permitting of release of .said locking member from said socket; and pins projecting from the projecting ends of said cleats adapted to releasably engage recesses provided in said ends of the cleats of the other section, substantiilll7 as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
