ADJUSTABLE CUL TIVATOR-FRAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vincennes, in the county of Knox and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Cultivator-Frame, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to the class of farming implement commonly known as disk cultivators in which the disks are arranged in gangs, the invention having reference more particularly to the frames in which the cultivating disks are mounted and operatively connected with the main frames of the implements.
The primary object of the invention is to provide improved construction in the disk frame that will enable the frame to be quickly adjusted without the use of separate wrenches or other tools, in order to adjust the axis of the disks relative to the horizontal; a further and specific object being to improve the adjustable cultivator frame illustrated in Letters Patent of the United States No. 998,489, dated May 30, 1911, to the end that such frame may be adjusted in every manner required or desired without requiring the use of removable or attachable wrenches or the like tool.
With the above mentioned and other obj ects in View, the invention consists in an improved cultivator frame comprising certain improved relatively adjustable parts provided with a clamping bolt for securing the parts together when adjusted, the bolt being provided with a movable eccentrically shaped head provided with a novel form of operating handle, the head being adapted to draw the bolt tightly, the bolt being provided also with an adjusting-nut for varying the efiective length of the bolt; and the invention consists further in the novel parts and in the combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter particularly described and claimed.

' In order that a clear understanding of the invention may be had a brief description of the structure with which the invention is associated is first given.
Two gang frames are commonly employed and comprise draft beams 1 and 1 respec tively that are suitably connected at one end with draft devices of the sulky or main frame, and as is well known, the rear ends of the beams may move up or down but are prevented from moving rotatively, the rear end portion of each beam having an upwardly extending quadrant 2 or 2 thereon, the beam having also a rearwardly extending pivot 3 adjacent to the quadrant, the quadrant having a curved slot 4 therein that is concentric to the axis of the pivot. Ahead 5 or 5 has a lateral extension 6 on one side thereof in which is a pivot bearing 7 receiving the pivot 3. Theextension has an upwardly extending arm 8 thereon which stands opposite to the quadrant 2 and has a suitable number of V-shaped teeth 9 thereon adapted to fit between similar teeth 10 formed on the adjacent face of the quadrant. The extension 6 may be moved longitudinally on the pivot 3 in order to disengage the teeth 9 from the teeth 10 in order to turn the extension ro-tatably to effect adjustment of the head 5 or 5 relative to the beam 1 or 1. The improved clamping bolt for securing the arm 8 to the quadrant 2 will be hereinafter fully described.
Each disk yoke comprises a main portion 11 and two arms 12 and 12, the main portion having a pivot 13 thereon which is rotatably mounted in the head 5 so as to constitute a vertical axis for the yoke, the pivot having a squared portion 14 from which extends a screw-threaded end portion 15, there being a washer 16 on the squared end portion, and a nut 17. on the end portion whereby the pivot 13 is held in the head. Axles 18 and 18 are connected to the arms of the two yokes respectively, and disk cultivators 19 and 19 are mounted respectively on the two axles. The main portion 11 of each yoke has a quadrant 20 on the forward side thereof and another quadrant 21 on the rear side thereof which are formed on a base plate 22 secured to themain portion 11. Each quadrant has asuitable number of notches 23 therein 7 The head 5 has a projection 24 thereon in which isapivot25, and a latch handle 26' or26 is mounted on the pivot 25 and has a latch. bar 27 thereon that is normally-inserted into a notch '23. The handle has two cars 28, 28, between which a locking dog 29 is mounted on a pivot 30 connected to the ears, the dog normally resting upon the projection in contact with thehead 5, the dog being provided with a finger-hold 31 which rests upon the projection 24 when the dog is thrown back to permit the latch bar 27 to be withdrawn from the quadrant.
It will be apparent that when the handle 26 is raised the yoke connected to the head 5 may be rotated slightly in order to readjust the disks or it may be reversed in order to reverse the disks, and likewise when the handle 26 is raised the other yoke in the head 5 may be re-adjusted or reversed as may be desired. Each quadrant 2 and 2 is provided with an eye 32 to which a lift-rod 33 is connected that has a spring 34 thereon, asis well known. I v
' Under some conditions in operation it is desirable to make frequent re-adjustments of the disks, and in order that every adjustment required may be expeditiously made, a bolt hole 35 is formed in the arm 8 and a clamping bolt 36 inserted int-o the hole and through the slot 4, the bolt having a screwthreaded end portion 37 on which is an adjusting nut 38 at the outer side of the quadrant 2 or 2; The opposite end portion of the bolt has an ear 39 thereon in which is a having a movable clamping head thereon comprising preferably two. parallel bars 41 and 41 extending from a cross bar 42 and provided with pivot holes 43 and 43"respectively to receive a pivot bolt 44 whereby the ear 39 is connected between and to the bars 41 and 41, the bars 41 and 41 having rounded end portions 45 and 45 respectively that are curved eccentrically to the pivot bolt 44 and are normally in contact with the arm 8 for securing the arm to the quadrant 2. In case the eccentrics or cams do not bear hard against the arm 8, close contact may be effected by tightening the nut 38 against the quadrant, after which no further adjustment of the nut is required in operation. The cross bar 42 normally rests upon the head 5 or 5 and is lifted therefrom to operate the eccentrics by means of a suitable handle preferably comprising a curved shank portion 46 extending integrally from the cross bar 42 and a handle portion 47 or 7 47 extending from the shank portion at one side of the plane of movement of the latch handle 26 or 26, the handle 47 belng in a plane above the handle 26 and thus permitting the handle 26 to be raised without interference Preferably a curved brace por tion 48 extends from the opposite side of the cross bar 42 to the shank portion 46 so as to form an annular shank adapted to normally rest upon the head 5 and extend about the washer 16 and nut 17 without interfering therewith. Preferably the eccentric port- ions 45 and 45 have contact with the head 8 in a plane slightly higher than the axis of the pivot 44 so that there is a tendency to prevent the handle 47 from being jarred upward during operations of cultivating, and such tendency is counteracted also by the weight of the handle and its shank.
In practical use, when it is desired to turn the head 5 on the beam 1 the handle 47 is lifted to upright position so as to permit the teeth 9 to be moved out of contact with the teeth 10, and after adjustment is made the teeth are again brought into relative engagement and the handle 47 is then lowered to normal position. If the head 5 is to be readjusted the handle 47 is moved upward as seen in Fig. 1 and again moved to normal position after the adjustment has been made. It will be understood that if'found desirable to slight-1y re-adjust the nut 38 it may readilybe done by hand when the handle 47 is moved to upright position.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that the adjustments of the yokes in their carrying heads and also the adjustments of the heads with respect to the draft beams may be very quickly made without the use of any separate tools whatsoever.

In a disk cultivator, the combination 1 with a beam and a quadrant thereon, a head p voted to the beam, an arm fixed on the head opposite the quadrant, adisk-carrying yoke and a pivot thereon extending rota- 7 tably through the head, and a washer on the head connected to the pivot thereof, of looking appliance mounted in the arm of the head and cooperating with the quadrant of the beam to adjustably secure the head to the beam, the said appliance having an operating handle that has a curved shank portion normally extending laterally around one side of the washer and resting upon the head, the handle extending beyond the head from the washer.

In a disk-cultivator, the combination with a quadrant provided with teeth and a pivot, the quadrant having a curved slot therein, a head rotatively adjustable on the pivot, an apertured arm fixed on the head and provided with teeth normally engaging the teeth of the quadrant, a disk-carrying yoke having a pivot rotatable in and proj ecting through the head, and an annular washer on the rotatable pivot seated upon the head, of a clamping bolt extending through the apertured arm and the slot in the quadrant, a nut screwed onto the bolt opposite the quadrant, and the two bars pivoted to the bolt and having an annular handle shank portion normally resting on the head and extending entirely about the said annular washer, the shank portion having a projecting handle thereon extending beyond the head from said washer, said two bars having rounded ends that normally engage the adjacent side of said apertured arm.
