OLIN A. SARGENT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOB TO THE FRASER TABLET COMPANY, A. CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
DISPLAY-EASEL,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 15,1913.
Application filed July 15, 1912. Serial No. 709,551.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OLIN A. SARGENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Easels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings. 7
This invention relates to a box or case for holding and displaying small articles of merchandise, such, for example, as packages other objects of the invention, together with means whereby the same may be carried into efi'ect, will best be understood fromv the following description of one form or embodi ment thereof illustrated in the accompany ing drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device in use and with the articles of merchandise in place therein. -Fig. 2 is a central vertical section with the articles removed. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken substantially on the line 3-3, .Fig. 2.
The device comprises a receptacle for containing the articles of merchandise 20, said receptacle preferably having bot-h its front and top open, as shown, togethergwith means or supporting said receptacle in an inclined position. The receptacle and supporting means may be constructed of any suitable material, suchas wood, sheet metal, or the like, but will preferably .be formed from cardboard or similar light sheet material.
In the construction shown the receptacle comprises a back portion 12, an integral bottom portion 13 folded forwardly from said back portion, and integral side portions 14 also folded forwardly from said back portion 12. The side portions 14 are secured at their lower ends to the bottom portion 13, this being accomplished in the construction shown by folding the lower edges 15 of than the back portion 12,
.hesive. In order to provi e for su the receptacle in an inclined pos1t1on the side, and
' said side portions beneath said bottom portion, and attaching the same thereto by any suitable means, such as staples 16. The side portions 14 are preferably of 'less length permitting the latter to be extended above the receptacle proper, as indicated at 17 said part 17 being a stifl' standing portion which provides a space for advertising matter, or fol-such other purpose as may be desired.
As herein shown the means for supporting the receptacle com rises separate supporting webs 18, formefrom separate pieces of 'material and rigidly secured to the side portions 1 of the receptacle in any suitable manner, as by means of lue or other ad,- orting lower-edges 19 ofsaid webs 18 are inclined to the back and bottom portions 12 and 13, respectively, of said receptacle, or are so out or shaped as,t0 form acute angles with both of said ortions.
From the oregoing it will be understood that the improved. display box or easel consists of only three pieces of sheet material. The body of the box or easel, with its open front and top, and its upwardly extended back 17, is formed from asinge piece of material in that the bottom 13 and the side portions 14 are bent or extended forward from the back, at right angles thereto, with the lower ends 15 of the said side portions bent inwardly so as to be parallel with the said. bottom and attached to said bottom to support the latter; while the support for the box comprises the two outer side pieces or webs 18 secured to said side portions 14 and having inclined lower edges and rear extensions terminating at theirlower ends some distance back of the body'of the box,
to support the latter in a backwardly inclined position. 7
By reason of the inclined position of the i'eceptaclethe articles contained therein are suitably 'su ported and retained by the back, ottom portions thereof, so that the top and front of said receptacle may be left open, as above described, in order effectively to display the contents and to permit the ready removal thereof. Moreover the supporting webs 18, being rigidly secured to the-side portionsM, form a convenient means for firmly sup orting the receptacle in the desired position without.
the possibility of overturning, and may, as above explained, be formed of the same material as the receptacle. Furthermore the upwardly extended portion 17 of the back 12provides a convenient space for the display of advertising or explanatory matter not appearing with the desired prominence upon the articles themselves, or for the exhibition of any other device designed to attract the attention of ossible purchasers.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desireto secure by Letters Patent:
A display box or easel having an open front and top and comprising only three pieces of sheet material, the body of the device consisting of a back portion 12, a bottom 13 and. side portions 1 1 integral with and extending forward from said back portion at right angles thereto, the lower edges 15 of said side portions being bent inwardly parallel with said bottom and attached thereto, and outer side pieces 18 attached to said side portions 14 and having inclined lower edges and rearward extensions terminating at their lower ends some distance back of the body of said box to support the latter in an inclined position In testimony whereof I afiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
