Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented June 10, 1913.

Application filed May 8, 1912. Serial No. 696,040.

0 all ti /1.07M it may concern:

Be it known that I. Nrononxs lln'un, a citizen of the United States, residing at hIcKinley, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bucket- Grips, of which the following is a specitica: tion, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to new and useful improvcu'ients in bucket grips and more particularly to a grip of this character which will be autonnitically released when the bucket is deposited on the ground and which can be readily and easily applied to a bucket when the same is to be raised.

Another object of the invention to provide a device of this character which will possess advantages in points of clticiency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.

"With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel 'teaturcs of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more :fully described, pointed out in the claim, and shown in the accompanying drawings in which,

Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the application of my improved bucket grip. Fig. 2 is a :front elevation. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

Referring more particularly to the draw ings, 1. indicates a bucket of any well known construction provided with a bail 2, to which is connected, by means of a ring 3, the U- shaped member 4. The body and shank portions of the member are substantially cylindrical in cross section. On one end of the U-shaped member is formed an inwardly extending and tapering head l having a depending lug 12 arranged in spaced relation with the shank portion of said U- shaped member. A link member provided having one of its ends bifurcated as shown a t. (3 to form spaced arms 7 which are arranged upon each side of the other shank portion of the member L and pivotally se cured to the end thereof by means of the bolt 8. The other end of the link member 5 is bifurcated as shown at 9 to :form the spaced arms 10 which, when the link is in its closed position, are arranged upon opposite sides of the shank portion and bear against the head l as shown at 9 to prevent: any lateral movement of the link member. A transverse bar '10 is disposed intermediate the spaced arms l0 and formed integral therewith, thereby providing a reccss it for the reception of the lug l2 and preventing the occurrcm-c of undue wear on the head 4- caused by the continual opening and closing of said link member 5.

A U shaped clevis member It is provided having its ends disposed upon opposite sides of the body of the link member 5 and pivotally secured thereto by means of the bolt .15 which passes through the link member and through the ends of the clevis. A nut to is threaded on one end of said bolt to hold the same securely in place. Loosely secured to the intermediate portion of the clcvis It is a cable 17, said cable having its end passed through the clevis and arranged in a wear loop and the extreme end of the cable is held securely in place by means of the grip It; which is clamped over the body portion and the extreme end of the cable.

in Fig. l. l have shown by dotted lines the position of the link member 5 before the grip is applied to the bail of the bucket. \Vhcn the hook member 4 has been applied to the ball 2 of the bucket and pulling power has been applied to the cable 17. the link member will be pulled upwardly into its locked position as shown by the full lines in Fig. '1. After the bucket has been raised and dumped of its contents, the same is again lowered to the ground and as it strikes the ground the weight of the clcvis and the cable will tend to push downwardly on the link member 5 and push the same down to its open position as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 1 so that the grip may be removed from the bucket to be applied to another bucket which has been previously tilled.

From the above description taken in connection with the drawings it will, be readily apparent that T have provided a grip of the character described which will be sim ple, durable, and inexpensive of manufacture and which can be quickly and r adily applied or detached from the bail of a bucket.

\Vhile I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carrying my invention into practice without sacrificing any of the novel features or departing from the scope thereof as claimed.

WVhat I claim is In a device of the character described, a substantially U-shaped member, an elongated inwardly extending and tapering head formed on one of the shank portions, a depending lug formed on said head arranged in spaced and parallel relation to said shank portion, a link member having its one end pivoted to the end of the opposite shank portion of said U-shaped member and its other end bifurcated so as to form spaced parallel arms and a transverse bar arranged approximately midway the length of the 15 NICHOLAS BAYUK.
