CHARLES S. ELLIS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' 7"" BAND PRINTING-STAMP.
Patented Aug. 12,1913.
Application filed. April 3, 1911. Serial No. 618,502.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES S. ELLIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Band Printing- Stamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the charac ters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in band dating stamps and the invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Among the objects of the invention is to provide an improved construct-ion in such stamps whereby to maintain the types in alinement at the printing line of the stamp, and a further object of the invention is to provide an improved drum about which the type bands are trained and which actuate the bands to compose the type at the printing line.
As shown in the drawings,-Figure 1 is a side elevation of a stamp embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of a short section of one of the type bands. Fig. 4 is an axial section of one of the type'band drums. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the fixed member of the frame to constitute the type backing or support.
The frame of the stamp comprises a transverse member 10, two side members 11, 11, usually formed integral with the transverse member, and a bar 12 which extends between and is attached in any suitable manner at the ends to the free ends of the members 11 and is provided at its side margins with stiffening flanges 13.
14, 15, 16 designate endless type bands which are trained about drums 17 and the fixed bar 12, said bar constituting the backing bar for the type at the printing line. The drums 17 are rotatively mounted on the transverse shaft 18 which extends between and is secured in any suitable manner to the side members 11, 11 of the frame.
In accordance with one feature of my invention the type bands 14, 15 and 16 are provided at their rear sides, opposite to the types 20, with spaced, interlocking portions adapted to engage a complementally shaped surface on the outer side of the backing bar 12; the arrangement being such that when the interlocking parts of the band and the fixed backing bar are engaged the bands are positively locked from turning or shift-ing. Thereby the types which are composed at the printing line are held in accurate alinement. The particular configuration of the bands and the backing bar which I have shown for eifecting this result consists in.
providing the bands at their rear sides, and opposite to the types with spaced, raised or transversely convex projections 21 and to form the outer face of the backing bar 12 with longitudinally disposed, transversely concave recesses 22 adapted to fit the projections on the backs of the bands, as best shown in Fig. 2. The depth of the projections of the bands and the depressions of the backing bar are somewhat exaggerated in the drawings to illustrate this feature of the invention. In practice, said projections and the backing bar recess need not be very pronounced or of great depth in order to effect the interlocking engagement of the bands and frame member or backing bar for the purpose stated.
lVhen the bands are provided with the transverse, convex projections 21 shown the drums 17 will be provided on their peripheries with complemental grooves or corrugations 23 in which the said band projections fit. This arrangement produces an interlocking connection between the drums and bands such as will prevent the bands slipping thereon and insure prompt and accurate re-setting movement of the bands when the drums are turned to compose the type at the printing line. The said drums are provided at their ends with the usual notcheddisks or flanges 24 which extend beyond the drums and the frame in such a manner as to be readily engaged by the fingers to turn the drums in resetting the type bands.
As a further improvement I have constructed the principal part of each drum of a single piece of sheet metal, it being drawn or swaged to form the cup-shaped portion 25, having at one end an integral wall 26 and at its other end the flange 24. The open end of the drum is filled by a plate 27 and said plate 27 and the end wall of the drum are provided with axial apertures 28, 29, respectively, through which extends the shaft 18 upon which said drums are journa-led. The construction shown provides a drum and its actuating flange which is simple and economical to construct, and which insures that the drum will be concentric with respect to its notched actuating flange.
The stamp may be provided with a familiar form of hand piece 30 by which to manipulate the stamp when it has the form of the simple dating stamp shown. The invention, however, is not limited to the type of stamp shown but may be used on any form of stamp employing a type band or bands trained about a fixed part of the frame which backs or supports the type at the printing point, and having means for shifting or turning the bands to compose the type at the printing line.
I claim as my invention l. A band printing stamp comprising a frame having a fixed type supporting member at the printing line which is provided with an exterior, longitudinal concave seat, type bands arranged side by side and provi ded on their outer sides with spaced type projections and trained across said fixed member, actuating and supporting means about which said bands are also trained, said type bands being provided on'their inner sides with rounded projections spaced to correspond with said type projections and adapted to engage said fixed concave seat, and to slip past the same, whereby the type project-ions are held in alinement by engagement of said projections with said fixed concave seat.
2. A. band printing stamp comprising a frame having a fixed type supporting member at the printing line which is provided with an exterior, longitudinal concave seat, type bands arranged side by side and provided on their outer sides with spaced type projections and trained across said fixed member, drums journaled in the frame and provided with peripheral recesses about which the type bands are trained, said type bands being provided on their inner sides with rounded projections spaced to corre spond with the type projections and adapted to engage said concave seat of said fixed member and the recesses of said drums, and to slip past said concave seat,
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses, this 25th day of March A. D. 1911.
CHARLES S. ELLIS.
