UMTEE TATES PATENT @FFTQE.
FRED F. GRAYIIAM, OF BIG STONE GAP, VIRGINIA..
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED F. GRAYI-IAM, citizen of the United States, residing at Big Stone Gap, in the county of Wise and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oiling Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to oiling devices and has for its object the production of an efficient opening means for allowing the oil to flow freely from the container.
Another object of this invention is the production of an efficient means for securely holding the valve in a closed posit-ion upon its seat, whereby to eliminate any danger of the accidental opening of the valve when the device is being carried from place to place.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved oiler. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken through the sealing plug.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals 1 designates the outer casing of the device which is provided with the threaded portions 2 at its upper end. A plug 3, which is provided with the aperture 4 is threaded into this upper end and forms a closure therefor. A valve stem 5 1s carried within the casing 2, and is provided with the threaded portion 6, said threaded portion 6 adapted to be threaded wlthin the aperture 7 formed in the adjustable knob 8. This knob 8 is slidably mounted within the aperture 4 formed in the plug 3 so as to allow the knob to be easily adjusted upon the threaded portion 6 of the valve stem 5. This aperture 7 extends longitudinally of and entirely through the adjustable knob 8, so that the knob may be easily adjustable upon the plunger 5. The lower end of the casing 2 is provided with the threaded por- Specification of Letters Patent.

tion 9 and adapted to receive the collar 10. A conical closure plug 11 is mounted upon the lower end of the valve stem 5 by means of the retaining screw 12, which screws upon the threaded portion 13 of the valve stem 5. When it is desired to remove the closure plug from engagement with the plunger all that will be necessary to do is to unscrew the retaining screw 12 by means of the head 14 formed thereon.
In order to hold the closure plug in en gagement with the collar 10 a coil spring 15 is mounted upon the valve stem 5, one end of said coil spring resting upon the under face of the bearing plate 16, which is formed upon the valve stem 5, and the other end normally rests upon the collar 10. It will be seen that when the adjustable knob 8 is partially unscrewed from the upper end of the valve stem 5 the device is in condition to be used and by pressing upon the head 17 of the adjustable knob, the spring 15 will be compressed, while the conical closure plug will be forced from its seat upon the collar 10 and will allow the oil to flow freely from the casing. It is also obvious that when it is desired to carry the device from place to place the adjustable knob may be threaded upon the valve stem 5 until the closure plug 11 is in firm engagement with the collar, and since the longitudinal movement of the valve stem is taken up by the adjustable knob 8, it will be impossible for the closure to accidentally open. It will also be seen that the conical closure plug 11 is provided with the protector plate 11 upon its upper end, and when the closure plug is in its correct position upon the valve seat, the shape of said plug Wlll allow 1t to firmly engage the inner sides of said collar. In order to facilitate the filling of the casing with oil an aperture 19 is formed in the side of the casing, and is closed by the sealing plug 20.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is
An oiling device comprising a casing having internally threaded ends, an externally threaded collar engaging the lower end of the casing, an externally threaded plug enthe plug, a valve stem extending through the casing and collar and having its upper end threaded for adjustably' engaging the sleeve, a valve carried by the lower end of the stem and seating on the collar, a bearing plate carried by the stem within the 10 casing, and a spring coiled about the stem and bearing on the plate and collar.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
