Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 24, 1914.
Serial No. 746,968.
1 b all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANKLIN SPENCER, Jr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Provo city, in the county of Utah and State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Revolving Screens, of which the following is a specification.
The purpose of my invention is to provide a drum screen for fishways, inclosing a power wheel through which the full power of a stream of running water may be developed, and by which the fish in said stream will be prevented from passing said screen, and one that will clear itself and not become clogged by moss or debris in the water. These objects I accomplish with the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation with parts cut away and parts shown in dotted lines, and one portion shown in Vertical section. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section on line :20 w of Fig. 1, looking to the left.
My device is mounted in a casing 1, preferably made of cement concrete and in two parts which parts are held together by bolts 2, to permit the removal of the drum screen when desired. Said casing 1 has two inwardly extended annular flanges 3, one on each side thereof. Said flanges are preferably formed triangular in cross section. Within said casing 1 and mounted in bearings 4 is the drum screen A. The ends of said screen A are loosely fitted within the said flanges 3. Said screen A consists of two circular disks 5, each having a plurality of slots 6 formed radially inward from the periphery thereof. In each of said slots 6 is fitted one end of a horizontally placed rod 7, and secured on the outside of and surrounding all of said rods 7 is the wire screen 8. On the periphery of said screen is secured a plurality of radially extended lugs or barbs 9, the purpose of which will be explained hereinafter. Hingedly secured or pivoted on each of said rods 7 is one of the blades 10. On the adjacent or inner sides of the said disks 5 are the horizontally extended lugs 11. The purpose of said lugs 11 is that each of said blades 10 will engage two of said lugs, and as the lugs are positioned on the respective disks in parallel alinement, said engagement will prevent the said blades from hingedly turning on their pivot rods 7 farther than to a radial position. On each of said disks 5 is concentrically secured an internal gear 12. in the said casing 1 is secured the shafts 13 on each of which is mounted an idler gear 14. the teeth of which mesh with the teeth of said internal gear 12 and with the teeth of the center gear 15. Mounted in said bearings 4 is the shaft 16, and concentrically within the said drum screen. A on the said shaft 16 is secured the power wheel 13. Said wheel consists of two annular rings 18, on each of which is secured an annular casing 19 to form the ends of buckets and a mounting for said rings. The said buckets are formed or made up by the radially disposed sides 20 and the ends formed by a segment of the said casing 19. A rod 22 is attached to the outer edge of each of said sides 20 and its ends are fastened in the said rings 18. Pivoted on each of said rods 22 is one of the blades 23, and forming at times a feathering blade. Each of said blades 23 is prevented from assuming more than a radial position on its pivot by the inwardly extended lugs 24 which are fastened on the said annular rings 18. While said blades 23 are passing against the current they fold as a cover to said buckets. Within the said casing 19 and secured on the said disks 5 is the gear casing 26 which is provided to prevent sand or grit from coming in contact with said gears and the bearings therefor.
When my device is placed in the stream or canal in which it is desired to prevent fish from passing and from which power is to be developed, the current of water, if the water is shallow and flowing in the direction of the arrow at, will be through the under side of the wheel and the power of the current will be in the said buckets and on the feathering blades 23, and said power wheel B and the said shaft 16 would be rotated in the direction of the arrow 6, and by means of the gears 15, 14, and 12 the drum screen A would be rotated the reverse way and in the direction of the arrow 0, and any moss, leaves, or debris in the water that would lodge against the said drum screen, on the up stream side, would be caught upon the said barbs or lugs 9 and be carried over the screen and be washed off and carried away by the current of water on the down stream side, whether the water was deep enough to cause said lodgment above or below the said shaft 16. The water passing out and away when the said blades 7 with less water had been turned by the power ofthe wheel B. The higher water would not only turn the said screen but would develop additional power, which is conveyed through the said gears to the shaft 16. As will be observed the drumYscreen A will at all times be turned in'an opposite direction to that of the said power wheel B, and any moss or debris that may lodge or catch on the up stream side of said screen, will be carried over said drum and be washed off by the water on the down stream side, and fish will be prevented from passing said screen, at any depth of water equal to the diameter of said screen A.
Having thus described my device I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim 1. In a device of the class described the combination of a wheel, buckets thereon, a
-.blade pivoted on one edge of each of said buckets and adapted to fold as a cover therefor; a drum screen concentrically carried on the shaft of said wheel and adapted to rotate in a reverse direction from said wheel;
7 barbs on the periphery of said screen; blades pivoted to the inner side of said drum screen; and means to prevent said blades from assuming other than a radial position in one direction on their pivots.
2. A device of the class described consisting of a shaft; ll-shaped buckets secured thereon; a blade pivoted on one edge of each of said buckets adapted at times to fold as a cover for said buckets and at other times to assume a radial position thereto; a drum screen carried on said shaft concentric with said buckets and adapted to revolve in a reverse direction to said shaft; gear wheels adapted to revolve said drum screen in one direction at all times that the said buckets are turning with the said shaft in the other direction; radial lugs on the periphery of said screen; and blades pivoted on the in side of said drum screen with means to prevent said blades from turning on their pivots to more than a radial position.
8. A power wheel and drum screen for fishways consisting of a casing; a shaft mounted therein; a wheel secured on said shaft having radially disposed V-shaped buckets thereon and a gear casing at each end of said buckets; a feathering blade pivoted to one side of each of said buckets, and at times foldable as a covering therefor; lugs on said gear casing adapted to prevent said blades from assuming more than a radial position to said wheel; a drum screen mounted on said shaft consisting of circular disks having inwardly extended slots cutting the peripheries thereof; horizontally placed rods having their ends fitted in said slots; a screen secured to and surrounding said rods; blades hingedly secured on said rods; lugs secured on said circular disks adapted to prevent said blades from assuming more than a radial position; and a plurality of radially extended lugs on the peripheral face of said screen.
In testimony whereof I have allixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
