Description

UNITED sTATEs l PATENT oEEIoE.
D. P. BALDWIN, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
SHOWER-BATH.
. i Speccaton of Letters Patent No. 10,919, dated May 16, 1854.
To all wher/L1z'ZmcLy` concern.'
Be it knownthat I, DANIEL P. BALDWIN, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manner of Constructing and Operating Shower-Baths; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descvription of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part `of this specification, in which- Figure 1, isa perspective view of the apparatus in operation, the water having an upward direction. Fig. 2, is a vertical longitudinal section of the same through the line, x, m, in Fig. 5, showing the cock turned, so as to admit both warm and cold water, and the director turned so as to give `the water a slight inclination downwards. Fig. 3, .is a broken vertical longitudinal section, similar to Fig. 2,-the cock being turned so as to admit but cold water. Fig. al, is a vertical longitudinal section of the apparatus, through the line, y, fy, in Fig. 5. In this view, the director is shown in black, as set to give the water a slight inclination upward from a horizontal plane; and in dotted lines, as set to give the water an inclination downward from a horizontal plane. Fig. 5, is avertical transverse section, through the line, 3/,y, in Fig. 2.
Similar letters ofreference in each of the several gures indicate corresponding parts.
The nature of my invention consists in a double discharging shower bath, which is capable of being turned in any desired position as to direct the water upon any part of the body of the person bathing,` and also of discharging the water in very small streams, so that it may descend in the form of spray, or in a heavier state, as may be desired. y
My invention consists, 2d, in a novel arrangement and application of the three way cock, to the supply pipes of a shower bath, whereby the warm and cold water can be supplied at the same time, and discharged together through one of the discharge ends of the shower bath, or the warm or cold water supplied alternately, and discharged separately as may be desired.
To enable others skilled in the art, to make and use my invention, I will' proceed to describe its construct-ion and operation.
A, B, represent the two branch pipes, rthey being shown passed through a shelf, (sup- E, is the main pipe, communicating with the branch pipes, as shown 1n Fig. 2,-one of its ends being inserted in the tube, a.
The stop-cock, D', has a passage, G, cut in it, in the manner shown in FigsQ, 3, and 5,-said passage being of such shape, and `being so situated, that when the cock is turned, itwill admit warm and cold water from the two branch pipes to the mainpipe, as shown in Fig., 2; or, it will, by properly turning the stopcock, admit cold or warm water, separately to the pipe, E.
The horizontal stem, b, of the main pipe, has a passage, c, cut` in it, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. Over this passage, the collar, d, slides,-said collar having the small tapering ends of the two reticulated trumpet shaped shower baths, Gr, H, inserted in it, as shown in Figs. 1, and t. The ends of said shower baths passing through the collar, and communicating with the passage, c, `in the stem, Z). The water is not ad mitted to both of these shower baths at the same time :G, receiving water, and dis charging it in an upward direction, in the form of spray, owing to its holes being very small, while H, is closed, and I-I, receives water, and gives it a direction downwards, or as shown in Fig. 2, while G, is closed. The shower bath, H, discharges a larger quantity of water than G, owing` to its discharge holes being larger. To eii'ect these changes, the shower baths are revolved, or
`turned from the position shown in black, to
the position shown in dotted lines, in Fig. 4, or vice versa.
This method of constructing, arranging, and operating shower baths, is very simple, useful, and convenient, as only one cock requires to be turned when it is desired to have warm or cold water separately, and is very compact and all the parts under the immediate cont-rol of the bat-her, and the direction `and fall of the water may be changed, so as to descend in the form of spray, or in greater volume.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The manner herein described, of combining the. two directors, G, H, and providing one of them with large, and the other, With small discharge holes, and arranging them so as to be capable of being revolved when it is desired to vary the direction and quantity of'the Wat-er discharged, and thereby increase or lessen its force upon the body of the bather, substantially as herein de scribed.
2. I claim the manner herein described and shown, of applying the three Way cock,
plied and discharged separately, as-may be desired, substantially as set forth.
DANIEL P. BALDWIN.
