Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MATTHEW K. oOUzENs, OE YONKEEs, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SELF-ACTING SEWER-BASIN TRAPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 110,829, dated January 10, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTHEW K. GOUzENs, of Yonkers, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and -Improved Self Acting Sewer Basin Trap 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
means for preventing the clogging of pipes which lead from basins or receptacles to sewers, and for consequently obtaining a constan outlet for such basins.
The invention consists in the application to the end Of the pipe Within each .basin Of a iioat-valve which is closed as long as the Ordinary outlet is open, but will be raised oft its seat to provide another outlet, if the former is clogged.
A in the drawing represents that end of the pipe leading from the basin to the sewer, which is Within the basin. The pipe enters avertical short tube, B, which is open at both ends, the lower end being but a short distance above the ioor of the basin. All liquid matter entering the basin will rise therein until it enters the lower end of the tube B, and then escapes through the pipe A.
The uppenend ofthe tube B is closed by a float-valve, C, which is made of sheet metal, and hollow or otherwise, so as to be lighter than water. It is fitted around avertical rod,
a, which is suspended from a basket-frame, D, iitted upon the upper part of the tube B.
The rod a penetrates the middle of the valve C, and constitutes a reliable vertical guide for the same. The upper part of the rod a carries a conical hood, b, which' protects the central opening in the valve, to prevent dust and dirt from entering and clogging the same.
The basket-frame D protects the valve C against sticks and blocks that may be thrown toward it.
Whenever the lower opening of the tube B becomes clogged, the water will rise in the basin until it reaches the valve C, which has a shoulder, c, projectingl over the sides of the tube. The water will oat the valve, and thereby open the upper end of the tube B, so as to provide another outlet to the pipe A. The opening through the middle Of the valve for the reception of the guide-rod a, I prefer to contract at the upper end, to keep out impurities.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The floating valve C, placed upon the pipe B, which connects With the sewer-pipe, to provide a secondary outlet for the same, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The protective basket D, secured to the pipe B, for protecting the valve C, as specified, and provided with a guide-rod, a, and hood b, for said valve, as specied.
MATTHEW K. COUZENS.
