Be it known that I, ERNrsT D. SrMoNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have inventeda certain new and useful Improvement. 1n- Reel-Fixtures, of which the following is a.I full, clear, and exact description.

Narrow fabrics, or'woven na-rrow ware, such as elastic fabrics, braid, ribbons, tape and the like, are furnished to dealers on spools, blocks, or reels, and the last 4have been made so that the fabrics may-be wound and unwound as desired. 4The winding apric is fixed in such way that by turning the spool the fabric will be wound upon it. Sides of appropriate diameter are'ar-v ranged upon opposite heads of the spool to confine the wound fabric thereon and protect it while being handled, and thev spool and sides have been connected to form the reel, by means ofy fixtures,V so-called, which fixtures serve the additional purpose pleasure.

The present invention relates to such fixtures, and it consists of eyelet-like metal members or parts having tapering barrels provided ontheir proximate ends with laterally extending teeth or prongs which are driven into the spool by expanding the barrels within a hole in the spool so as to unite the spool, sides and iixtures. ne of the metal parts may have a bail connected with it to serve as a handle for turning the spool to wind the fabric, as I will proceed now to explain and nally claim.

In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, in the several figures of which like parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a reel. Fig. 2 is a diametrical cross-section, on a larger scale, with the sides broken away. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of one of the metal parts detached, Fig. Af is an edge elevation,` and Fig. 5 is a rearelevation thereof; Fig. 6 is a cross-section of the other metal part detached, Fig. 7 is an edge elevation, and Fig. 8 is arear elevation thereof. Fig. 9 is a diametrical cross-section on the scale of Fig. 2, showing the parts in position to be assembled and before the metal parts are REEL-FIXTURE.

or thickness approximately the same as thefabric it is to receive, has a central hole 2, and also has any suitable provision, such as a radial notch 3 indicated b v the transverse dotted line in Figs. 2 and 9, to engage the inner end of the fabric to be reeled or packaged. 4 indicates the sides, of Cardboard or other suitable material.

The reel fixtures for uniting the spool 0r lcore and the sides in such way that the said spool or corev may be rotated between the sides, comprise similar metal members or parts 5 and 6, of eyelet-like formation. The part 5 has the flange or head 7, of any suitable contour, which may be provided with the :sockets 8 to receive the bent-in ends 9 of a bail or handle lOiby which the spool is rotated; or, as shown in Fig. 10. this part 5 may be provided with a tange or head 7 without'a bail or handle; and in such case any suitable provision may be made for turning the spool. In either case the part may be .provided with the shoulder 11 to cause the flange or head tostand off from .the spool suiciently to receive the adjacent side l; but as shown in Fig. 11 the shoulder may be omitted from both parts of the iixture. The tapering barrel 12 terminates in laterally extending teeth or prongs 13. The part 6 likewise has a flange or head 14, a shoulder 15 (although this shoulder may be omitted-Q as just stated and as shown in Fig. 11,) and a tapering barrel 16 having the laterally extending teeth or' prongs 17. Y l The modifications shown in Figs. 10 and 1l represent both parts of the fixtures, or'

in other words, Iboth parts of the fixtures of these modifications are alike.

As shown in Fig. lthe parts are assembled by placing the spool centrally between the sides so that the holes 18 in the sides will register with the hole; 2 i'n the spool; then the fixture parts 5 land G are inserted in these holes from opposite sides so that their toothed barrels will approach one I another within the hole in the spool, but so separated as to leave the spool' free to be turned or rotated between the sides, land then by means of a suitable expanding tool, the barrels are expanded from a taper to a cylindrical form, thereby driving the teeth or prongs 13 and 17 into the wall of the hole V2 in the spool, as shown in Fig. 2, and so securing the several parts together, and

'in such way that the spool may be rotated between and independently of the sides to Wind the fabric upon it and permit unwinding of the same. The handle swings freely in the sockets S so as to gravitate into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 9 against the adjacent side, and so as to be capable of being turned out into position of use, as shown in Figs. 3, 4 and 5. The parts 5 and G may be made of thin sheet metal, substantially as eyelets or grom'ets are made, and produced economically. The simplicity of application of the fixture is a main advantage of the invention.

What 1 claim is l. A reel fixture, adapted to connect the lwinding spool and the sides of a reel for packaging narrouv fabrics and permit the winding and unwinding of such fabrics onv such reel, comprising similar eyelet -like parts or members, each having a'fiange or head and a barrel provided with laterally extending teeth adapted to be expanded into permanent engagement with the spool.

2. A reel fixture, adapted to connect the winding spoolr and the sides of a reel for packaging narrow fabrics and permit the winding and unwinding of such fabrics on such freel, comprising similar eyeletlike part-s or members, each having a liange or head' and a barrel provided With laterally extending teeth adapted to be expanded into permanent engagement with the spool,

and an operating medium applied to one of the members.

3. /A reel fixture, comprising similar eyelet-like parts or members, each having a flange or head and a tapering barrel provided with laterally extending teeth, combined with -a spool, the barrels adapted to be expanded so as to embed their teeth permanently in the spool to effect the application of' the fixture to the reel.
