nIsPLAYcARron' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 20, 1914.
Application filed May 8, 1912. Serial N 0. 695,943.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RALPH RQRICHARD- soN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, and useful Improvements in Display-Cartons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to display cartons and seeksto provide a simple and effective construction which can be economically manufactured. and which is provided with a hinged lid and means for holding the lid in raised position, so that the contents of the box and advertising matter, on the face of the lid is displayed.
The invention consists in the features of improvement hereinafter set forth, illustrated in the preferred form in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a "iew of the improved carton in collapsed condition. Fig. 2 is a perspective View thereof with the lid held in raised position for convenience in displaying and dispensing the goods contained in the carton. Fig. 3 is a crosssection thereof with the lid in raised position.
The improved carton is preferably formed of a single blank of still paper or pasteboard, and comprises top and bottom side I walls a and b connectedat their edges by the narrow side walls 0. Horizontal scores 1 form the corners between the side walls a, b and c. The upper side wall is p1'o-' vided with an extension or flap 2 which is connected thereto by one of the horizontal scores 1. face of the rear edge wall 0. The edge walls c and the top'wall a are provided with fold able end flaps 3 and 4 separated therefrom by the scores 5. In the formshown, the wide. flaps 4 on the topwall of the box are provided with folding extensions 6 connected thereto by scores 7.
When the box is folded for use, the top and bottom walls are separated, the terminal flaps 3; on the side walls 0 are turned inwardly and the terminal flaps 4 on the top wall are turned down,.the extensions 6 of the latter being inserted between the bottom wall 6 and the lower edges of the flaps 3. In this manner the carton may be folded for use, filled through one of its ends and the have invented certain new- This flap is pasted to.the inner terminalllaps at the ends folded to inclose the goods. The top side wall is provided with a lid 03 which is preferably cut out of the top wall rear edge by a score or hinge connection 8. The rear edge or hinge connection 8 of the lid is parallel to and spaced apart from the extreme rear edge of the top wall a. Prefspaced from the corresponding top Wall. i
A tongue e is cut out partly from the wall a and partly from the rear portion 'of the lid 03. The tongue has a hinge connection along the line 1 with the body of the box and extends across the hinge connection 8 of the lid. The tongue is provided with laterally projecting portions 9 and the lid is provided with slits 10. 'When the lid is swung upwardly about its hinge connection or score '8 and the tongue is swung about its hinge connection or score 1, the projections 9 of the tongue may be inserted through the slits 10 of the lid to hold the lid in the raised position shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The goods contained in the carton and the advertising matter on the'inner face of the lid are thus displayed and the raised lid affords a convenient means for handling the box. The tongue e is preferably provided with a transverse scored line 11 adjacent the lateral projections 9, sa) that th ton ue ma e turned to are JQIl en a e thc outer fiice of the lid. 1 l y b g The cut out lid d and the cut out tongue e are held intheir respective cut out spaces by narrow connecting portions 12. These parts .are thusheld in position during the ship ment of the goods. When the be displayed and dispensed, the connecting portions 12 may be readily cut with a knife or otherwise severed and the lid and tongue edges of the raised and interlocked.
It is. obvious that theimproved tongue and lid construction may be applied to different types of boxes and that other changes may be made Without departure from the essentials of the invention as defined in the claims.
I claim as my invention 1. A carton having an integral hinged lid, and a tongue cut out of the box body and said lid and forming, whenthe lid is closed, with said box body and lid a complete closure, said tongue extending across and connected thereto along its erably, also, the other edges of the lid are goods are to the hinged edge of said lid and arranged to engage with the lid to hold the same elevate 2.- A carton having a lid integral with the 5 upper side wall thereof and hinged to said side wall adjacent its rear edge, and a hinged tongue out out ofsaid upper side wall and said lid extending across the hinged edge of said lid and having projections arranged to interlock with slits in the lid to hold the same in raised position.
3. A carton having a hinged lid and a cutout tongue with narrow connecting portions holding said tongue within its out out space, said tongue being shiftable to operative position by severing said connecting portions, and arranged to interlock with said lid to hold the same raised. 4:. A carton having connected side walls and terminal flaps for closing the ends thereof, a hinged lid cut-out of one of said side walls, and held in its cut-out space by narrow, connecting portions, and means integral with the carton for holding said lid in raised position, substantially as described.
5. A carton having connected side walls and terminal flaps for closing the ends thereof, a hinged lid cut-out of one of said side walls and a cut-out hinged, tongue arranged to interlock with said lid, said outout lid and tongue being held in their cutout spaces by narrow connecting portions, substantially as described.
