Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed July 24, 1914. Serial No. 852,891.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN Gwoznzmwioz and MAJK BizoN, subjects of the Emperor of Austriadlungary, residing at Bretz, in the county of Preston and State of lN Virginia, have invented certain, new` and useful Improvements in Lanterns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new `and useful improvements in lanterns.
The primary object of this invention is to provide an adequate top and bottom ventilating means for the burner chamber of a lantern.
A further object is to provide a foursided glass lantern with a hollow domeshaped Ventilating cover, and especially adapted for carrying a candle and provided with a screened ventilated bottom.
`With these general objects in View, and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application, and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views* Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical central sectional view taken through the device. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of lthe top re fleeting plate removed, and, Fig. 3 is a per spective view of the bottom ventilating plate detached.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the invention is illustrated in connection with a four-sided lantern consisting of glass sides 10 positioned within the framework 11, and having a top 19. provided with outlet perforations 13, and with a bottom 111 hav ing air inlet openings 15. A tubular holder 1G is mounted within the device upon the bot-tom 111 and substantially centrally thereof, and adapted to receive a candle 17 removably mounted therein. The top 12 supports a smoke-bell 16 centrally positioned therebeneath and in direct vertical alinement above the candle 17. Protecting wires 18 are arranged around the frame eXteriorly of the glass side while a bail 19 is hinged to the top 19. adapted as a handle for carrying the lantern. Beneath the bottom 14E a box-shaped metallic casing 20 is secured, being provided with perforations 21 through its bottom and sides and has its open top positioned beneath the openings 15 of the lantern bottom, while corner supporting legs 2Q are secured to the lower surface of the said bottom. A hollow cover 23 is hinged as at 241: to the top 12 and is provided with a central exit opening 25 for the products of combustion, which latter enter within the chamber 2() of the cover through the top perforations 13. Within the chamber Q6 a baiile plate 27 is secured to the upper face of the top and has semi-circular curved sides 28, havinor perforations 2S) therethrough, and extending directly above the perfor-ations 13. A door for the lantern is preferably provided by hinging one of the sides at 30.
Thile the forms of the invention herein shown and described are what are believed to be preferable embodiments thereof, changes may be made in the device without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What we claim is 1. A device of the class described comprisn ing a. combination with a lantern having a candle mounted therein, and with a perfoated top and bottom, of a smoke bell centally positioned on the under surface of said top, a hinged hollow cover upon said top and having a central outlet opening, a baille plate within said cover, having perforated curved flanges extending over the perforations of said top, and having their side edges spaced from said top, the said plate being attached to the top, at a point between said perforations and beneath the cover openin".
2. A device of the class described comprising a lantern top and bottom having perforations therethrough, a box-shaped casing having perforated bottom and walls, and secured beneath the lantern bottom and the perforations thereof, a dome-shaped cover hinged to the lantern top, and forming a chamber therein, and having a central out- Q y 1,115,067I
