THE NORRIS PETERS n1. PHOT'O-LITHO \VASHINC TON. '1 c.
OIJOF LE ROY LARSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SOLDERING-BRUSH.
Application filed February 12, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OLOF Ln Roy LARSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soldering- Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to brushes for applying soldering fluxes and the object of this improvement is to provide a simple and effective device of the character mentioned which will be normally maintained out of the soldering flux and adapted to easily move into the soldering flux when it is so desired.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming apart of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a central section of a soldering brush and its mounting embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a section of the same taken on line 2-2 in Fig. 1.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a wire brush handle 3 rebent and twisted providing the loop 4: at its bight portion. Rebent through the bight portion at are a plurality of brush bristles 5 and said brush bristles are provided with a tie 6 to maintain them in position in said bight portion a. An acid resisting material 7 is inclosed around the juncture between the bristles 5 and the handle 3 substantially as shown. Said acid resisting material is preferably molded around said juncture to prevent acid from entering said juncture.
The handle 3 is slidably mounted through a hollow body 8 and its cap 9. The stem 3 is provided with a plurality of lateral perforations 10 and in one of which is a pin 11. A washer 12 having flanges 13 is mounted on the handle 3 immediately beneath the pin 11 and between the washer 12 and the bottom of the hollow body 8 is a compression spring Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 747,906.
lat resiliently maintaining the pin 11 against the under side of the cap 9 in a manner to allow the brush handle 3 to be moved downwardly upon force being applied to said handle to dip the bristles 5 into a soldering flux contained in a container 15. The hollow body 8 is provided with recesses 16 in its peripheral flange to permit the hooks 17 carried by the cap 9 to be removably secured thereto.
In operation a soldering flux is placed in the container 15 and the bottle stopper applied to said container substantially as indicated in Fig. 1. In use the workman presses downwardly on the handle 3 to engage bristles 5 with said flux then removes the brush and bottle stopper from the container 15 to apply the flux to his work. He then returns the bottle stopper to its position until it is next desired. The spring 14: normally holds the bristles 5 out of the flux so that the chemical action of the flux will not unnecessarily destroy the bristles 5. The body portion 8 and lower portion of the handle 3 may be painted with an acid resisting material when so desired. The acid resisting material 7 is provided to prevent the flux from reaching the lower portion of the stem 3 thereby preventing it from unnecessarily eating the handle 3.
\Vhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In combination, a hollow bottle stopper; a brush handle slidably mounted through said hollow stopper, there being spaced lateral perforations in said handle; a pin in one of said perforations; a spring around said brush handle and resting on the bottom wall of said hollow stopper; a washer between said pin and said spring on said hanname to this specification in the presence of dle; and an annular flange on said Washer two subscrlblng wltnesses.
engaging the ends of said pin locking the OLOF LE ROY LARSON. latter in its perforation in said handle, sub- Witnesses: 5 stantially as described. JOSHUA R. H.-POT'rs, In testimony whereof I have signed my HELEN F. LILLIs.
