Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented Mar. 9, 1915.

Application filed February 27,- 1914. Serial No. 821,440.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Mozns VAN GELDER,

a citizen of the United States of America,

and a resident'of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattresses,

of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in mattresses known as center filled and the object of the invention is to provide amattress of this type-formed of a plurality of layers of cotton felt, or other suitable material, having a plurality of extra smaller layers in the center, with a view of preventing the formin of depressions or rldges in the mattress. 0 this end the center ayers are arranged to extend from'side to side of the mattress, but are considerably shorter than the upper and lower layers and are so arranged as to provide a gradual tapering otf'the mattress toward its ends.

- The figure is aperspective view, partly' in 1 section, showing a mattress c'onstructed accordingto this invention.

Referring to the drawing, the body part of the mattress is constructed in the usual way, consisting of a plurality of layers 1 of felt-like material tufted together ,as, illdl'f cated in the drawing, and provided with a suitable coverin 2. In the middle ofthe mattress are a p uralit of shorter layers of ends 0 7 similar felting 3 exten 'ng from side to side of the mattress. The" middle layer 4 is .longer than the layers 5 below and above the middle. layer to provide the gradual taperinfg of the center filling toward the the mattress, oonsequentl the mattress thickest in vits mi dle portion and thinnest at its ends while being preferably of uniform thickness in section 0m side to side at any point-along the length. of the mattress.

he center layers 4 and 5 may be of unimaking form thiclmess throughoutbut are shown reduced in thickness at their ends, thus assisting to gradually taper the mattress toward its ends in-addition to the taper given the mattress by making the center layers t and'5 of different lengths.

Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, it will beunderstood that some of the details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from.

the spirit of this invention following claims.

I claim:

1. A mattress comprising a suitable coveras defined by the ing and a plurality of layers of filling extending from side to side and end toendof the mattress, and, aplurality of" separate fiat intermediate layers of- "filling located between certain of the first-mentioned layers and extending from side to side of said mattress said intermediate layers being super posed and of dilierent lengths andvconsider y ably shorter than the firstmentioned layers and tapered at their ends.

2. A mattress comprlsmg asuitable covering and a plurality of layers of'filling extendmg from side to side and end to end of.

the mattress, and a plurality of, separate fiat intermediate la ers of filling located between certain of the st-mentioned layerssand extendin from side to-Side of said mattress but'o different lengths and vconsiderably shorter than the first mentioned layers,-"said gsho'rter layers being reduced in thickness at
