UTTED sTaTEs PATENT or CHARLES BERGENER, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO C. T. HAM MANUFAC- TUBING COMPANY, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
Application filed December 27, 1910.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES BERGENER', a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Convertible Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined or convertible vehicle lamp in which oil or electricity can be employed interchangeably as the illuminant, and has theobject to provide a lamp in which the electric lighting device does not interfere with the ordinary and effective use of the oil burning device and which is simple in construction and convenient in use.
In the accompanying drawings, consists ing of two sheets: Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in vertical section, of a lamp provided with this improvement. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof, on a reduced scale. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the rear portion of the lamp. Fig. 4; is a top plan view, partly in horizontal section. of the lamp. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the removable contact plug. Fig. 6 is a sectional elevation of this plug engaged in the holding socket. Fig. 7 is a detached sectional view of the holding socket and posts.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the several figures.
A represents the body or casing of a vehicle lamp, B the front glass or lens, I) the hinged frame thereof, 0 the oil pot, and c the wick burner mounted thereon.
D represents the rear plateor door of the body or casing attached at one side by a hinge d to the body and secured at the opposite side by a suitable catch 6. This rear door or plate is provided on its front side with a concave reflector f and carries at its middle a screw socket g for an electric light bulb G. This socket opens forwardly in the center of the reflector and projects rearwardly into a rearwardly extending central enlargement or housing It formed on the rear side of the door or back plate. The door is further provided on its rear side with a transversely arranged holding socket in which an insulating base K is secured, having two contact posts 76 which project sidewise from the base and socket and are connected at their inner ends by conducting Wires 2' with the attaching screw socket g.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20, 1915. Serial No. 599,272.
The holding socket I receives a removable contact plug M of insulating material, having in its inner portion two bores m by which it fits on the posts is, and being provided in the outer portions of said bores with contact pieces n to which the electrical conductors are connected.
0 represents a locking spring which is secured with its inner end to the holding socket I and projects beyond the outer end thereof for engagement with the removable contact plug M, which latter is provided with a notch 0 in which the shouldered end portion of the spring engages when the plug is in position on the posts 70. Upon releasing the spring from the plug the latter can be withdrawn from the socket and posts. The attaching sleeve and posts are inclined outwardly'and downwardly in order to shed rain and snow and keep the contacting parts free from moisture. The reflector is cut away only at the middle, where a comparatively small portion is removed to make room for the attaching socket and as this portion lies in the center of the reflector, which stands in rear of the flame, the removal of this portion does not appreciably impair the reflecting effect. The light bulb can be readily attached to the rear reflector by reason of the hinge connection ofthe rear door or plate with the body or casing of the lamp. When the bulb is in place on the reflector it projects forwardly therefrom in the axial ine of the reflector and lamp body and leaves the effective surface of the reflector practically unobstructed.
The electric light bulb does not interfere with the use of the oil burner in the ordinary manner or with the effect of the reflector in connection with the oil burner, and the lamp is always ready to be used either with oil or electr'city, as may be desired.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a lamp casing comprising a body, and a hinged back plate by means of which the interior of said body is accessible from the rear, of an attaching socket for an electric light bulb secured to said back plate and opening forwardly, a detachable electric light bulb removably held in said socket, a holding socket for a contact plug which is secured to the rear side of said back plate, and conductors con necting said sockets;
2. The combination with a lamp casing comprising a body, and a hinged back plate by means of Which the interior of said body is accessible from the rear, of an attaching socket for an electric light bulb secured to said back plate and opening forwardly, a detachable electric light bulb removably held in said socket, a holding socket fora contact plug which is secured to the rear side of said back plate transversely to said attaching socket and opens sidewise at its outer end for the reception of said plug, and conductors connecting said sockets.
8. The combination with a lamp casing having a front glass and a back plate, of an attaching socket for an electric light bulb carried by said plate and opening for- Wardly, a holding socket for a contact plug arranged on said back plate and provided with an external locking spring, and a removable contact plug adapted to enter said Copies of this patent maybe obtained for Wardly, a holding socket for a contact plug arranged on said back plate andflprovided with an insulating base and contact posts,
of said holding socket, and :a removable contactplug adapted to enter said holding socket and provided with bores for said posts and With means for engaging said,
spring, substantially as set forth. r I \Vitness my hand in the-presence. subscribing Witnesses Witnesses: I V
