ROLLYN H. BAKER, OF DAYTON, OHIO.

BOX-OPENER.

Application filed March 21, 1914. Serial No. 826,359. g

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RoLLYN H. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Box-Openers, of which the following is a specification. I

This invention relates to improvements in box openers and has for its object the provision of a simplevand cheap device that is readily reset when the cover is replaced and that is thoroughly efficient and reliable in operation and which moreover is not likely to casually open the box.

To this end the invention consists in combining with a box comprising a palr of members arranged so that one partly overlaps the other, a triangular opener pivotally mounted on the overlapped mem presenting a straight edge to the edge of the overlapping member, the pivot of said opener being at a point between its upper corners and the lower'corners of said opener being outturned to form a handle as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings :Fig1ire 1 is a perspective view of a blacking box provided with an opener constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same showing the opener in the act of releasing the cover of the box. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same.

The box may be of any suitable construction embodying a pair of members arranged so that one member partly overlaps the other. For the purposes of this specification I show my box opener attached to'an ordinary blacking box comprising a circular body 1 and a circular cover 2 the latter having a skirt 3 which partly overlaps the body and is provided with an outturned flange 4. The body of the box also has. a bead 5 on which said flange bears.

er and i In accordance with. my invention I pro- Specification of Letters Patent. Pat nted May 18, 1915.

vide a triangular opener 6 which may be made of any suitable sheet metal and which i is pivoted as at 7 to the box body, the pivot being arranged at a point below and. be-, tween the upper corners 8 of the opener. Thereby the opener is arranged to present a straight edge at its upper end which bears against the under side of the flange of the box cover. The lower corner of the opener is outturned to form an operating handle 9.

To release the cover it is only necessary to partly turn the opener in either direction so as to cause one of the upper corners thereof by engagement with the flange of the box cover to act as a cam and pry up one side of the cover, thereby releasing the latter.

Having thus described my invention, 1

claim e In combination with a box comprising a pair of members arranged so that one partly overlaps the other, a triangular opener pivotally mounted on the overlapped member and presenting astraight edge to the edge of the overlapping member the pivot of said opener being at a point between its upper corners and the lower cornerof said opener being outturned to form an operating handle, the overlapped member having a bead thereon coincident with the upper edge of the opener and the overlapping member having an outturned flange at the edge of its skirt to bear on and overhang the straight edge of the opener when the latter is innormal position.

In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
