Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 1l, 1915.
Application led February 12, 1914. iSerial No. 818,427.
' T0 all 'whom it may concern f Be it known that I, ULRICH REIDT, a subL ject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented/certain .new and useful Improvements in Permutation-Iadlocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in permutation pad locks and resides. in the provision of a lock which is simple, reliable and eflioient and cheap to manufacture.
An important object of my invention is i to provide a lock of the character described which employs -a novel form of locking means which is simple as to construction, reliable and expeditiousin operation and which'may be cheaply manufactured.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more, particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and forma part of this application. With reference to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferredv embodiment of my invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several viewsof which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts: Figure l is a view in elevation of the lock showing one of the sides of the lock casing removed, Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line2-2 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is a top plan view, Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail sectional view. of a portion lof the looking means yforming a part of the invention.- Fig. 5 is a` fragmentary side elevation with the plate removed partly in section.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates as an entirety a'lock casing in which is mounted a. sliding shackle 2. This casing 1 is provided with the usual removable side wall 3 that is secured by bolts or other suitable fastening means. One end of the shackle 2 is longer than the other and has rotatably mounted thereon a cylindrical sleeve 4 which is provided at its ends with annular flanges 5 and 6. The longer end of the shackle 2 is reduced to provide a shoulder 7 that is disposed adjacent the free end of the shackle. The sleeve 4 is reduced at its lower endv to provide a shoulder 8 arranged'to coperate with the shoulder 7 to prevent upward movement of the sleeve upon the shackle 2. The extreme end of the shackle may be enlarged to prevent downward movement of the sleeve 4. An outwardly extending annularflange 9 is formed on the sleeve 4 adjacent but spaced from the lower end thereof. This flange 9 is provided with a recess 10 which terminates inwardly at the curved face of the sleeve, and is for a purpose to be later described. An opening 12 is formed in the sleeve 4 and is adapted for registration with a recess or indentation 13 that is formed in the shackle 2 in that part which is incased within the sleeve 4. The flange 6 on the lower end of the sleeve 4 rests in engagement with a flange or shelf 14carried by the casing as will be clearlv seen with reference to Fig. 1 in the drawings.
Mounted centrally ofthe lock casing 1 adjacent the upper portion thereof is a pair of arcuate plates 15 and 16 that are pivoted centrally of their ends as at 17. Pivoted between the plates 15 and 16 at the. inner end thereof is a bolt 18 v.that is slidable through a suitable guide 19 and arranged t0 extend through the opening 12 in sleeve 4 into the recess or indentation 13 of the shackle2. rIvhusit is seen that one end of the shackle 2 is adapted to be locked against removal from the casing 1. Iivoted between the plates 15 and 16 adjacent the other ends thereof isa bolt 20 that is slidable through a suitable guide 21 and arranged to fit within a recess or indentation 22 formed in the] adjacent end of the shackle 2. As a means for holding these plates 15 and 16 1n such a position that theA bolts 18 and 20 arenormally in extended or locked position there has been provided a leaf spring 23 that 1s secured in any suitable manner at one end as at 24,'passes through a suitable guide 25 and engages at its free end one face of the plates 15 and 16 thus holding the bolts18 and 20 in extended position.
Assuming that the shackle 2 is locked at both ends as illustrated in Fig. 1, to unlock Aloo the shackle the sleeve 4 is so turned that the l opening 12 therein is moved away from the bolt 18. In this connection it will be noted that the bolt 18 is beveled upon its side faces and top so that a reduced end is provided. Upon engagement of the edge of the opening 12 in the sleeve with the adjacent beveled face of the bolt 18, which face` acts as a cam,'thelbolt will be moved outwardly l relative'to the opening 13 in the shackle and cause the bolt to be moved out of locking engagement. Rotation of the sleeve is continued until the recess 10 in the flange 9 isl in alinernent with the end of the bolt when the shackle 2 isfree to be moved outwardly from the `casing 1 since at the time of the vmoving ofthe opening 12 in the sleeve4.- from the bolt 18 the inwardmovement imparted the bolt is suiiicient to withdraw the bolt 20 from engagement with thegshackle 2.
. Thus the shorter end of thelshackle may be lwithdrawn from the lock casing 1 and the unlocking is provided. The bolt 18 engages the flange 6 and prevents withdrawal completely of the shackle 2. It is found prefJ erable to form the indentations 13 and 22 in sary to`impart a series of turns to the sleevel the nature of notches thus permitting a snug fitting and -proper release.
It will be readily observed with reference to the foregoing 'description and accompanying drawings thatv Iphave provided a slmple and eilicient form of lockwhich may be before the desired locking or unlocking action is provided.
In reduction to practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the 'preferred embodiment, is the most eiicient and practical; yet realizing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary,
I desire to emphasize the fact that various 1 45 minor changes in details of construction, proportion and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacri- -ficing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
-What is claimed is z- 1. A lock comprising a casing, a shackle slidable therein, a sleeve rotatably journaled upon one terminal of, saidr shackle and diseach end, said 'sleeve having an opening therein arranged to communicate with the notch in the adjacent end of said shackle, an annular flange formed on' said sleeve adjacent to the openingtherein and being pro vided with a recess, an annular iange formed on the eXtreme inner end of said sleeve, bolts pivoted within the casing and adapted `for registration with the notches in said shackle, one of said bolts\ being arranged to bear upon the upper face of the iange that is arranged adjacent to the opening in said ,sleeve when said sleeve is rotated and spring means for normally holding 'said bolts in extended position.
2. A lock comprising a casing, a shackle slidable in said casing, a sleeve rotatably journaled upon, said shackle and disposed partly within said casing and having Ian opening therein intermediate its ends, an annular ange thereon adjacent to the opening, a recess therein, an annular flange on the lower end of said sleeve, a bolt pivoted within said casing and arranged to extend through said opening,.said shackle having "a notch therein disposed for alinement with said opening, said bolt arranged to fit within the notch and disposed at its free end normally above said rs't .named ange and means for normally holding said bolt in extended osition.
3. A ock comprising a casing, a shaekle slidable in. said casing and having notches adjacent each end,a sleeve mounted upon said shackle and disposed partly within said casing, a-pair of bolts slidable and pivotally mounted within said casing andarranged to coperate with said notches, said sleeve having an openingtherein to receive `011e of the bolts, said opening arranged to aline with one of the notches in'said shackle whereby the bolt may engage said last named notch,
and means for normally yieldinglyyholding said bolts in extended position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. v
