Description

movable powder r, chief by stitches MILDRED K. POTTER, 0F PASSA IC, NEW JERSEY.
HANDKERCHIEF.
Application filed May 11, 1915. Serial No. 27,330.
vT0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MILDRED K. POTTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Passaic, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Handkerchief, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved handkerchief which, besides its customary use as such, provides a means to enable the user to apply powder to the face, especially in public places, and without embarrassment or attention or the necessity of privacy.
In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of a powder puff resting with its back on the handkerchief, and a flexible retainer for holding the powder puff removably on the handkerchief, preferably at the middle thereof, the retainer being formed of a piece of fabric material, corresponding in texture to that of the handkerchief, the retainer having its edges sewed or otherwise fastened to the'handkerchief, and the retainer having a central opening less than the size of the puff to disclose a portion of the face of the puff and allow of using this portion cation of powder to the face.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanyi g drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a face view of the handkerchief; Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the handkerchief when in use for applying powder to the face. I
The handkerchief A of any approved size, material and shape is provided with a repuff B, preferably resting the middle of the liandkerchief A, and the said powder puff B is held in place on the handkerchief by a retainer C in the form of a piece of fabric material,
with its back on .preferably corresponding in texture to that of the handkerchief. The piece of material C is fastened along its edges to the handker- D or other suitable fastenthe retainer extends over the face of the powderpuff B and is provided with a central opening E somewhat less in size than that of the powder puff B ing means, and

so that a portion of the face of the puff is disclosed through the opening E, and this portion of the powder puff can be used for applying powder to the face of the user. It will be noticed that the powder puff B is preferably flat and circular in shape and likewise the opening E, but such is not es sential except that the opening is less in size than the powder puff so as to hold the latter removably between the retainer C and the handkerchief. As the powder puff B is flexible it can be readily passed through the opening E into position on the handkerchief or removed therefrom whenever it is desired to launder the handkerchief.
In using the powder puff for applying powder to the face the user takes hold of the back of the handkerchief at the middle thereof so that the remaining portions of the handkerchief fall over the hand while apply powder to the same.
In the application of face powder as now generally practised, it is necessary to expose the powder puff and the receptacle containing the same, and the process of applying powder to the face is visible thus rendering it very embarrassing when a person desires to apply powder to the face in a restaurant, theater and in the street.
A desirable object of this invention is the unnoticed act of applying powder to the face when in public. There are times and places when a woman has no need for a purse or handbag of any description, thus no place to carry powder and receptacle while a handkerchief is necessary and may be carried about the person conveniently enough to secure and wipe the face in the presence of others without disclosing the fact that the application of powder to the face is going on.
The opening in the retainer can be scalloped and the fabric embroidered or otherwise decorated in a manner that may be considered suitable or attractive. The retainer may be made ornamental to any degree desired by cutting or otherwise making the fabric, that is applied to the handkerchief by sewing, basting or other fastening means, in the form of a flower or other design. This may be further embellished by embroidery or other ornamentation.
It is understood that the powder puff is fluffy all around and is capable of retaining suflicient powder for a certain length of time, and the puff can be unnotic'eably and conveniently reversed to present a saturated face for further use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: v
1. A handkerchief provided with a powder puff and a retainer for the same, the powder pufi overlying with its back one face of the handkerchief and the said retainer being-in the form of a piece of fabric material attached along its edges to the handkerchief andextending over the powder puff to hold the latter reinovably in place on the hand kerchief, the said retainer having an opening less in size than the powder puff to disclose a portion of the face of the powder puff and to allow of 'using this portion for the application of powder to the face.
2. A handkerchief provided with a removable flat powder pull res-sting with its back in the middle of the hand kerchicf, and a retainer for the powder pull to hold the latter in position on the handkerchief, the said retainer being formed of a piece of fabric material sewed along its edges to the handkerchief, the said piece of fabric material overlying the face of the powder puff and having an opening less in size than the powder puff to disclose the central face portion of the powder puff and to allow of using this portion for the application of powder to the face. i
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
