GEORGE S. ELALLERIDA'L 0F POUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO QUEEN CITY KNITTING MILLS, INC., 0F POUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION DF NEW YORK.
Poughkeepsie, inl the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shawls; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact-description as will enable others skilled in the art to vwhich it appertams to make and use the same.
My invention consists in the novel featuresl hereinafter described, reference being had to lowing description and claims.
the accompanying drawing which shows one embodiment of my invention whichI have selected for purposes of illustration, andthe said invention is fully ldisclosed in the fol- Referring tol the said drawing, represents a perspective `view of my irnproved shawl as worn upon the person. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the shawl detached from the wearer and showing the `-same opened and ready to. be donned bfy the wearer. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the shawl closed. Fig. 4 isa sectional view taken on line 4--4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 3.
My invention relates primarily to ladies shawls or scarfs although it is also applicable to other purpose, the object being to provide a shawl or. scarf which will retain its position on the shoulders without the necessity of the employment of any extraneous fastening device.
, A further object of my invention is to provide an improved shawl or scarf whlch is adapted to cover the shoulders, arms, and a portion of the back of the wearer, and which after being placed onthe wearer will snugly engage those portions of the body with which it contacts. l
-According to my invention, I attach to or form integrally with the shawl or scarf, short sleeves or the equivalent, comprising a vvLristlet provided at each end of said shawl.
In carrying out the invention I proceed as follows, that is to sav; I provide a shawl which is folded centrally and longitudinally toform opposite sidesl which are left nnse- "iiicured at their free edges except at the ends "'of the shawl which terminate in vbands or wristlets. v
. As above stated the wristlets are formed4 Specication of Letters :Patent-- Figure 1 `Patented Oct. 19, 1915.

integrally with the shawl, that is to say, formed in the process of knitting by which the shawl may be made.`
In the drawings 1 designates the main or body portion of my improved shawl which is preferably made of'knitted fabric and by theprocess of knitting and is preferably approximately oblong in shape or ,of a length suicient to reach from one of the wearers wrists over the shoulders and around the back to the other wrist. This body portion is preferably folded centrally and longitudi nally along the line 2, to form opposite sides 3 and 4 which when placed on the wearer, are adapted to snugly engage the shoulders, arms and a portion of the back.v The ends of the body portion 1 are connected or made integral with tubular wristlets 5 and said ends are reduced in width insorder to neatly connect with the wristlets, as shown at 6.
In donning the shawl, the hands of the wearer are first placed through the wristlets and the hands are then raised and the body portion l of the shawl thrown over the head to engage the shoulders. The shawl will then form a semi-coat or short coat in which the sleeves are left open on the underside, as shown at 7. Mv device in effect forms a short jacket in which the sleeves are integral with the body and need not be separately applied. I
Scarfs or shawls made as above described, are found to retain their place on the shoulders of the wearer without any tendency to fall` the w'ristlets exerting the necessary grip without any discomfort, and owing to the fact that no extraneousvfastenings are needed, the life of the garment 1s prolonged.
the shoulders and the upper portion of the y,
back, and provided at its extremities means for engaging the wearers wrists. I v 2. A scarf or shawl comprising a body portion narrower at `its extremities than at its central portion, adapted .-to cover the shoulders-and the upper portion of the back, land provided at its extremities with means for engaging the wearers wrists.
3 A scart or shawl comprising a body portion adapted to cover the shoulders and back of the wearer, the longitudinal edges of which are unsecured except at a portion of their length toward their extremities, where they are secured together.
4L. A scarf or shawl comprising a body portion approximately rectangular in shape and adapted to cover the shoulders and the upper portion of the wearers back and provided a-t its extremities with tubular portions to be engagedby the wrists of the wearer.
5. A scarf or shawl comprising a body 'portion approximately rectangular in shape and folded upon itself to form opposite side portions, the free edgesV of which are unsecured except at a .portion of their length adjacent their extremities, where they are secured together.
6.. A scarfl or shawl comprising a body portionapproximately rectangular 1n shape and cfolded longitudinally upon itself to form opposite side portions, the freeedges of which are unsecured, and integral tubular sol portions provided at the extremities of the v
