Description

K. C. GILLETTE. SAFETY RAZOR. APPLICATION mzn DEC- 1; mo.
Patented Nov. 2, 19159 ieaarnu rub KING C. GILLETTE, OF \BROOKLINE, MASSACHUSETTS.
SAFETY-RAZOR.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Kins G. Ginnn'r'rn, a
citizen of the United States, and resident of.
Brookline, in the county of Norfolk and tltate of lllassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safetyltazors, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to razors of the safety type, with interchangeable blades, and has to do more particularly with the construction of those parts which constitute the blade holder, being intended to provide a safety razor having a simple, durable and inexpensive blade holder of such construction that the blade may be applied or detached very quickly and easily, and without having to he slid under overlying parts or otherwise moved in such manner as to dull its cutting edge by contact with any part of the holder.
A. safety razor embodying my improvements as preferably constructed is illustrated in the ac companying. drawings, in-
which,
Figure ll 1.; an end elevation oi the complete razor; Fig. 2 is a rear iew thereof;
Fig. 3 is a transrersesection through the head of the razor; Fig, d is a plan view of the head ;,and Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig.
1, showing the blade in a different position.
As illustrated in the drawings, the razorcomprises a handle 2, a head 3 attached-to one end of the handle, and'a detachable blade l. The front edge of the head is provided with a guard such as a line of teeth 5 of suitable form, and back of this line of teeth I provide means for supporting the rear portion of the blade, such as supports 6 located near the side edges ofthe head and at such a height as to cause the blade 4 to assume a proper angle with respect to the teeth 5. The blade may be of any suitable construction, but is preferably made of sheet steel and sharpened on one longitudinal edge only, in which case its opposite'edge may be provided with a reinforcing strip 7 The cutting edge 8 of the blade is held in 0p- .erative position by suitable means such as upwardly and backwardly projecting lugs 9 formed on the head 3 at the ends of the line of guard teeth 5 which lugs not only serve as stops to prevent the edge of the blade from projecting too far over the guard teeth but also cover the corners of the bladel Serial N 0. 596,009.
. some a slanting position with respect to the handle 2, as shown, and for detachably securing the blade in this positionl provide a spring-actuated back clamp adapted to engage the reap edge of the blade and press it both forward and downward, so that said back clamp not only holds the blade down.-
upon the supports 6 but also holds the cut- Specificatiou of Letters Patent. 7 Pgfintedl N 2, 19115,, Application tiled December 7, 1910.

ting edge of the blade against the liigs 9.
This back clamp comprises a pivotedbar 11 having fingers 12 extending upward and forward therefrom and preferably arranged to engage the blade directly over the supports 6, and a spring 13 which bears against the head 3 and serves to force said fingers l2 downward and forward upon the rear edge of the blade as above described, .the bar 11 being pivoted at its ends in the end portions of the head 3 as'shown at 11*, with the spring 13 extending downward there- By pressing upon the spring 13 the fingers 12' maybe raised sufiiciently to permit the insertion or removal of the blade, or the blade may be inserted by locating the ends of its cutting edge beneath the lugs 9 and letting its rear edge rest upon the fingers 12,
as shown in Fig. 5, whereupon the application of pressure to the spring 13 will lift said fingers until the blade drops into place between the positioning lugs 10 and upon the supports 6. 'lheback clamp if released will then engage the blade and hold it firmly in proper position for use. Theact of inserting or removing the blade is thus per formed very quickly and easily, and without requiring the blade to be slid into the holder or under-any overhanging parts, or moved 1n any such manner as to cause its cutting edge to shde or come nlcontact with any portion of the holder, whereby the edge might be dulled or otherwise impaired.
The construction above descnbed is also advantageous for the reason that it enables the holder to be produced at slight expense,
since the body portion of the head, bearing" the guard teeth 5, supports 6, lugs 9 and 10 and the bearings for the back clamp may be stamped from a single piece of sheet metal and readily bent into final shape, while the back clamp itself, including-the fingers l2 and spring 13, may also be formedfroin a single piece of sheet metal. The handle 2 may be made from a metal rod and readily produced by automatic machines ofa well nown type. A three-part holder is thusproduced whichrequires no castings to be made for any of itsparts and also involves little or no machine work in finishing the parts, while the fact that it has but one movable part and no adjustments makes it very durable and not likely to get out of order. It is also easily cleaned, as all the parts of the head are of open construction.
I claim as my invention 1. In a safety razor, a holder comprising a. handle, a head extending transversely thereto and provided with a guard and with positioning stops at the ends of the guard to engage the edge of the blade, lugs extending upwardly from said head'to receive the blade between them and separated above the blade by a distance not less than the length of the latter, said lugs being provided above the head with inwardly-projecting supports "for the rear portion of the blade, and a.
v spring-actuated back clamp mounted to rock toward and away fronrthe guard. and including means for exerting pressure on the i'ear 'edge of the blade in a direction having both forward and downward components. '2. In a safety razor, a holder com rising a handle, a head having a guard, means for supporting the. bladepand positioning it with respect to the guard, and acne-piece back clamp mounted to rock on a pivotal axis toward and away from the guard, said a back clamp being provided above its piv- .otal axis with means for engaging the rear edge of the blade and below its pivotal aXis 'cember, 1910.
,lugs to'prevent endwise movement of the blade and inwardly-projecting supports for the rear edge of the blade, a sheet metal back clamp pivotally mounted on said end portions and provided with fingers pressing downwardly and forwardly on the rear edge of the blade and with a spring bearing against the rear edge of the head, and a bandle'secured to said head. i
4. In a, safety razor, a three-part holder secured to one end thereof and extending transversely thereto, said head being provided with a guard, positioning lugs at opposite ends of the guard, upstanding end portions adapted to receive the blade between them and having inwardly-projecting blade supports at a distance above the head,
and a sheet metal back clamp mounted to rock on a pivotal axis toward and from the guard and provided above said axis with a clamping" finger extending upwardly and forwardly over the rear edge of the blade and. below said axis with an operating thumb-piece and a spring terminal portion. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this fifth day of De- KING C. GILLETTE.
