, Be it known that I, DAVID Hniiin'romra citizen of the United States, residing at Greensburg, in the county oi' Westmoreland and StateA of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.
Bly invention relates broadly to improvements in valves and more particularly. to those having vertical externally threaded stems and nuts through which the stems are threaded, the main object of the invention.
being to provide simple and etlicient lubrieating means surrounding the stem directly below the nut, whereby the threads thereoi` are lubricated at all times.
A further object is to provide a member supported by the valve casing and adapted to receive a packing ring for preventing thev leakage of oil from the lubricating means.
Yet another object is to improve upon the general construction of devices of this character to such an extent as to providev a simple, strong and very efficient valve.
With the above objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combination herein described and claimed and shown in the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a valve constructed in accordancewith my vinvention; Fig. 2 is a central v'erticallongitudinal section thereof with the lubricating device and thevalve in active position; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the parts 14'ancl 25; Fig. 4 is a horizontal section as seen along the plane of the line4-4 of Fig. 2.
In these drawings, .constituting a part of this application, the numeral 1 designates a horizontally disposed substantially Vcylindrical valve casing whose opposite ends are open and provided with polygonal external heads 2 for the reception of a wrench, while such ends are internally threaded as seen lat 3 to provide for the attachment of inlet and outlet pipes (not shown). As most clearly disclosed in Fig. 2, the center of the casing 1 is provided with what may well be termed ahorizontal partition 4 which is provided with an opening 5 having two diameters, the upper end of the opening being of greater diameter than the lower end thereof and having litswall -threaded to1 receive external threads ona` removable valveseat Orring 6,

Formed upon the upper side ofthecasing 1 at a point directly above the partition 4, is an upright hollow boss 7 whose upperl end is` externally threaded .as seen at 8, these threads receiving similar threads formed on the innerv side or' a horizontally disposed ring'9 from which a pair of yoke armsv 1,0 rise, these arms being extended inwardly at theirupper ends and integrally joined to a nut 11, this nut depending below its juncture ywith the arms 10 and being khere exter-l nally threaded'as seenat 12.
The arms 10 are here shownas equipped with an annular stop shoulder 13 which is Jformed integrally with the ring 9 and which bears against the top of a disk 14, this disk resting squarely upon the upper end of the hollow boss 7 and normally closing the latter. j At 'its center', the disk 14 is provided with a circular opening 15 which is vertically alined with but of less diameter than the yopening, and on its upper'side, said disk is equipped with -a vertical annular iiange 16 which is spaced outwardly a con! siderable distance, from the opening 15, whereby to provide an annular pocket for the reception of apacking'ring V17 As clearly disclosed inFigs. 2f`and the vring 17 snugly surrounds an upright cylinf drical stem 18 whose upper end is externally threaded at 19 throughV thenut 11,
while its lower end passes through'the cen-v tral opening 15 .and y terminates directly above the removable seat or ring 6, at which point it is provided with a removable head 20 which retains` in position an inverted cup-shaped ring 21, the inner side and upperend ofthis ring having ya flange 22 contacting with the upper side of the head as shown. a removable valve disk 23 having a reduced externally threaded boss, at its center is secured to said ring 22 by threading its boss into the lower end of the same, in which position, the upper end of the boss contacts with the lower side of the head 20. The
active or lower face of this disk 23 is here shown as of substantially a diameter equal to the diameter of the ring 6 withV which it coacts to obstruct communication between the two ends of the casing 1.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,'it will be seen .that a very simple and eflicient lubricating device has been provided for ciling the threads of the valve stem to allow it to be easily rotated to open and close the valve, yet that the leakage of oil from the oil-cup into the valve casing is positively prevented by the provision of the packing ring v17. It will rfurther be seen that no threaded connection which might cori-ode, is provided between the plate or disk 14 and the hollow boss 7, but that said plate or disk is held in fluid tight contact with the upper end of said boss bv the ring or shoulder 13 on the yoke, this being also a rather important feature of the invention,
The stem, above described, may be equipped with a hand wheel 40 as shown in the drawings, but might well be provided with other 'means for rotating it at will, such hand wheel being preferable, however.
IVhen however, it is necessary` provided with'screw threads, of an oil-cup surrounding the stem directly below the nut and having screw threads engaging the threads thereon.
2. The combination with a valve having an upright externally threaded operating stem, a nut through which the stem is threaded, and an oil cup surrounding the stem directly below thev nut, said cup being adjustable vertically, 'of an annular chamber surrounding the' stem, a packing ring disposed in said chamber and contacting with the stem, and a iange depending from the oil-cup and bearing against said ring.
3. The combination with a valve having an upright externallyy threaded operating stem, a nut through which said stem is threaded, said nut having external screw threads at its lower end, and an oil-cup surrounding the stem directly below the nut and having internal screw threads engaged with the threads thereon, of an` annular chamber surrounding the stem directly be` low the oil-cup, a packing ring in said chamber and contacting with the stem, and an annular ia'nge depending from the oil cup and bearing against said ring. n
