i To all wiomlz'tynaj/ concern v l Be it known .that I, ALLANL. MoGRnoeR,
y acitizen' ofthe United States, and aresident of Chicago, in thel county of Cook and State i "of Illinois, have invented certain new `and useful Improvemcntsin Presseaof which the following isaspeeilication. y
" @My invention relates to presses particularly" adaptable foruse in garages in the rei I0` pair of motor vehicles.l
The obJcctjof the invention is to produce a press tot" simpleand inexpensive construction yet one which possesses great strength `andi whose capacity is very large as coinpared `to its own weight. i
:Theobjectishtnrtlier to provide such ar- `rangement that the `press can be adapted for y a varietyo work and canb'e` very readily operated by hand with little exertion to get very great pressure."
`On the accompanying drawings I have "shown a press embodying the features of n'iy invention.` `1' 0n these drawings Figure llis a side elevational` view, Fig. `2 is a `front elevational l viewgliig.` 3` isanfenlarged sectional lview on plane 3+-3,Fig. 2,Fig. 4 is "an under side view of a base plateadapted to be applied to W therpressiorsupporting work, Fig. 5 isa ;.30

' andathe arched topl1-i secured at its ends to thetops of the sides. Near the top thc sides verse` front and rear channel beams 15 and `16,;and` at the lower ends the sides are se- *curedby front and rear beams 17 and 18 Ak45 bvvhich, as shown, are in the form of angleb "s, YThe various partsof the frame may i veted, bolted, `or `otherwise, rigidlysep The front and rear flanges of the seams` and '.151 have the bolt holes 19 `1 55 `port for `work be operated on by the press.

i Extending centrally of the press and. be-
tween the beams and 16 is the guide frame I for the press screw 26, bolts 27 rigidly. securing the frame to the beams. The frame is further held in place by a bolt 28 extending downwardly from the arched top 14 of the press frame, a spacer 29-surrounding the' of the `frame 25. At its lower end the rame 25 `has the cross head 30 from which extends 65 thestirrup 31. The cross head 30has the opening 32 and the stirrup has the opening 33, through which openings the screw 26 is free to shift longitudinally, the screw being prevented from turning by a pin 34 extending transversely through the upper4 end thereof and into the opposite slots 35 and'36 in the frame 25. Surrounding and threaded to rect-live the screw is the hub 37 whicli extends between the cross head 30 and the boti tom of stirrup` 31 and, this hub carries a large 'rotated and. the screw 26 will be raised and lowereth` the gearing ratio and screw pitch "'beingsuch that the screw will exert very heavy pressure. 'lhe hand wheel 42 sufices ry work, but if extray heavy presthis lever being applied in the" socket frame l5 rotatable at its lower end on the shaft 40 adjacent to a pawl wheel 46 secured to the shaft, a pawl 47 being pivoted to the socket frame 45 to copcrate with the pawl wheel in the well known'nian'ner Any length of lever can be applied in thesocket frame 45.
At its lower end the screw A26 has a socket ber secured. In Fig. 2 the press is being -utilized to remove a shaft a from 'a gear Z2.
The gear rests on pieces of channel bars c and (l with the shaft extending downwardly between them and the plates 21 and 22, and a tool :i is secured in the socket 48 by a set screw 4!) and bears at its lower end against the top of the shaft a, to he removed. l When the hand wheel 42 or the lever 44 is now turned the tool e will exert heavy pressure no `the 'screw dring reei'pztocation thereof, ahub f'f between saidc'oss head and stirrup having Hfhi'eaded engagement with said screw1 a gear 5Qn`said hub, a transverse shaft journaledJ on said press iamestructure, a pinion on said Shaft meshing with said gear, means for ro- ALLAN L.
