ALBERT n BATE-s, .oF NYACK, NEW YORK FILiNG-CASE.
, Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 30, 1916.
Application filed September 17, 1915. Serial No. 51,160.
To all whom it may concern a it known that'I, ALBERT E. BATES, a
citizen of Canada, residing in the city of .Nyack, Rockland county, State of New York, have invented 'or'discovered certain new and useful'Improvements in.Filing- Cases, of which the following is a full, clear, and complete disclosure;
-Myinvention relates to. improvements in filing cases such, for example,as. are used ,for
1 retaining bank statements, orother papers or documents which .1t is necessary to consult or examine at frequent intervals.
'An object of my invention is toProvide a filing case which when open, will retain the 7 Contents in. such a'position that they are "easily accessible, and when closed, will provide a dust-proof receptacle convenient for filing.
Another object ofmy invention is the provision, in combination with my improved 1 filingease, of'a stand or support therefor, --wh ich stand is so constructed as to-retain the case when open, in such a-positionfthat -th .contentsjthereof maybe readily consulte ormanipulated.
I ,2 Other -ob ects of my invention will appear fromthe specification and claims which follow.
perspective view of my improved case,
Referring to the drawing: Figure 1 is a shown in open position resting upon its stand or support, and Fig. 2 is aperspective View of the case in closed position.
The-case for box A comprises two sections B andC which are hingedly connected together at .10, as shown. The section-B, pref-.
erably includes the wall 11, which serves as the'bottom ofthe box When' closed, the adjacent wall'l2; andthe cover 13. hinged to the-top jof the side wall 12. Connected to the bottom and side walls'11, 12, are theend vwalls 14, 15, "one or both of which may be partially cut away to facilitate-access to the contents of the box. v I side wall 16,
which, as "above indicated, is hingedly connected at 10to the-bottomwall 11 of section B,the top walljlf, and the end walls 18, 19.-
The top wall 17 is preferably cut-away as- ?"mdicated ;the drawing the side wall -16 preferably'proyided at its upper edge The section C includes, the
witha m l chasjw, whereby the ma-.

and 12 are retained in oppositely inclined positions. The side wall 16, of. section, G, rests on the fiat portion of the supportand is thus retained in a substantially horizontal position.
The method of using my invention is as.
follows: Assuming that it is desired to consult,"examine or copy the cards, papers, or
other contents of one of the ,boxes A, this box is opened and placed on a stand -D 10- cated ina convenient point as, for example,
adjacent a typewriter stand, The papers or cards to be examined are:supported'at their lower edges by the wall 11 andrestface up against the wall 12. By reason of this inclined position of the cards 0r sheets,
it is very easy to examine them one by one,
or .to copy their contents, and then do osit them face downward uponthe wal 16..
After all of the cards or sheets have been examined, they are all lying facedownward on the wall 12, so that the box'may easily be closed and filed -away. Any suitable latching and locking means such as indicated at 22, may be employed for retaining the box closed.
While I have illustrated but one embodi ment of my invention, it is-to be understood that I do not wish to limit-myself to, this particular form-of device, since, obviously,
many changes may be made therein without my invention.
' WhatI claim is:-
1. A filing case comprising a .pair -of' sections, one of said. sections including abottom wall, aside wall, a pair of end walls, and a hinged cover, and the other of said sections including a side Wall, :hingedly connected to the' bottom wall of the first mentioned section, a top wall and. a air of .end'walls, one of the'end walls of the first adapted to rest in said V shaped recess so that said walls are retained in oppositely inclined positions. 4
3. In combination, a substantially horizontal base provided with a longitudinally extending V-shaped recess, and filing case adapted to be supported by said base,- said case comprising a pair of hingedly connected sections, one of said sections including fabottomiwall and aside wall, and adapted to rest in said V-shaped recess so that said walls areretained in oppositely inclined positions, and the other of said'sections 1ncluding. a Side wall adapted to rest in substantially horizontal posit-ion upon-said base.
v 4. In combination, a substantially horizontal base providedwith a longitudinally extending V-shapedrecess, and a filing case adapted to be supported by said base, said case comprising a pair of hingedly connected sections, one of said sections including a bottom Wall and a side wall, and adapted to rest, insaid V-shaped recess so that said walls are retained in oppositely inclined posit-ions, and-theother of said sections including a side wall adapted to rest in substantially horizontal position upon said'base, a pair of end walls, and a top wall, pai tially cut away to permit easy access to the contents of the case.
5. In combination, a substantially hori- 7 zontal base provided with a longitudinally extending V-shaped recess, and a filing case adapted to be supported by said base, said case comprising a pair of sections, meet I said sections including a bottom wall, aside wall, a pair of end walls, and a hinged cover, and adapted to rest in said V-shaped recess so.that the bottom and side walls'are re tained in oppositely inclined positions, and the other of said sections including a side wall hingedly connected to the bottom wall' of the first mentioned-section and adapted to rest in substantially horizontalposition on said base, a top wall and a pair of end walls.
In combination, a substantially horizontal base provided with, a longitudinally extending V-shaped recess, and a filing case adapted to be supported by said base, said case comprising a pair of sections, one of said sections including a bottom wall,'a side wall, a pair ofend walls, and'a hinged cover, and. adapted to rest in said V'-shaped recess so that the bottom and side walls are retained in oppositely inclined positions, and
the other of said sections includingla side wall hingedly connected to the bottom wall of the first mentioned section and adapted. to rest in substantially horizontal position on said base, a top wall and a pair of end walls,
,one of the-end walls of the first-mentioned section and'the top wall of the last 'mentioned section being partially cut away to I permit easy'access to the contents of the Case.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
