To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, FRED DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilkes- Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pump-Screens, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a pump screen, it being in the nature of a device adapted to be interposed upon the pump inlet line for the purpose of screening pebbles, stones, slate and small pieces of foreign matter from the water received into the pump.
Tn coal mines large pumps are employed continually for the sole purpose of removing the water in the mines and to prevent the accumulation of any seepage which might flood the workings. These pumps, however, are very frequently injured and sometimes seriously so by having bits of coal, slate, stone or the like fed into them by the pump inlet which is removing the water from the mine.
It is the principal object of this invention, accordingly, to provide a screen box which may be directly interposed on such inlet for the purpose of preventing all such particles of foreign matter from entering the pump inlet line from the outlet side of the box.
The above and additional objects which will become apparent as this explanatory description proceeds, are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and form a part of this application.
With reference to the drawings, wherein there is illustrated the preferred embodiment of this invention as it is reduced to practice, and throughout the several views of which like characters of reference designate similar parts :Figure l is a side elevational view of the pump screen of this invention, Fig. -& is a central vertical sectional view taken through the same subject-matter, and Figs. 3 and 4: are respective sectional views taken on the lines 3-3 and H of Fig. 2.
In the embodiment illustrated there is employed a box structure designated 5 as an en tirety and including top, bottom and side walls of such dimensions as to provide a considerable enlargement over the areas of the pump line upon which the screen box is to be interposed. An inlet 6 and an outlet 7 are integrally and axially formed with the walls of the box and connect directly with portions of the pump line on the inlet side of the latter. The inlet 6 of the pump screen is projected into the box and has its mouth Y slightly beveled for a better fit with the check valve 8 which is pivoted to the top of the box 5 in the manner indicated 9. The screening member is designated 10 as a whole and is interposed directly before the outlet 7, consisting of grate bars 11 both vertically and horizontally positioned from the dividing rib 12 which extends transversely of the box 5, such rows of ribs contacting with the topand with the end of the box directly before the outlet 7 in the manner par tlcularly illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. A plate 13 is carried by the extremities of the horizontal grate members 11 and is secured through the medium of bolt means 14 to the end of the box through which the outlet 7 extends.
One of the sides of the box is formed'with the elongated opening 15 which serves the purpose of a clean out door, being covered by a closure plate 16 of any desirable char-v acter which is removably maintained in the posltion particularly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3 through the medium of bolt means 17 or a similar desirable fastening.
In operation the water pumped through the pump line enters the screen box through the inlet 6 after overcoming the gravitational resistance of the check valve. Any particles of solid matter including the rock, stone, slate, coal, pebbles, etc., which might have been drawn up through the pump line, from the intake in the mine workings is deposited within the box both through the action of gravity and through the resistance offered to their passage from the outlet 7 by the screen member 10. Obviously this will prevent with positiveness the introduction of those portions of foreign matter into the pump mechanism which have heretofore been found injurious while the box can be readily cleaned when theaccumulation of rock and stone is too great through the medium of the removable face plate 16.
While in the foregoing, however, there have thus been illustrated in the drawings and described in the specification such combination and arrangement of elements as constitute the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is desired to emphasize the fact that such minor changes in the matters of proportion and degree may be made in later adaptations of this device as shall not alter the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:' V
1. A pump screen including a box a dapt ed to be interposed upon the pump line, an inlet and outlet for said box adapted to communicate with respective portions of said pump line, a check valve normally closing said inlet by gravity, and a screen member permitting fluid communication only between sai'd box and said outlet, said member including a central rib, horizontal and vertical grate bars extending to respective portions of said box from said rib, and a base plate for supporting said screen member.
