To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES A. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing in Riverton, Burlington county, New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Label-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

One object of my invention is to provide a holding device particularly adaptable to files, the drawers or other containers of card index systems, boxes or the like, for holding a label, reference card, 620., the construction being such as to facilitate the introduction and removal of such card. a

I further desire to provide a label holder which, While being relatively inexpensive, simple and substantial in construction, shall be conveniently operative to an open or closed position and shall have its parts so arranged as to permit of its convenient application to a structure on which it is to be mounted.

Another object of the invention is to pro vide a label or card holder including a frame hinged to a supporting base in such a manner that the resiliency of that part of said base employed as a hinge connection shall serve to retain the frame either in its closed or in its open position; the arrangement of parts being such that the screws or other elements holding the base to a supporting structure serve also to hold the label or card in its proper place in the frame.

These objects and other advantageous ends I attain as hereinafter set forth, reference being hadto the accompanying drawing in which,

Figures 1 and 2 are respectively front and side elevations illustrating my invention as applied to the handle of a drawer or similar container; Fig. 3 is a perspective View illustrating a label holder of the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, applied to a ver tical face or front of a drawer; Figs. 4 and 5 are two vertical sections illustrating the positions occupied by the various parts of the device when it is in its open and closed positions respectively; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view illustrating my invention so applied as to itself serve as a handle.

In the above drawings 1 represents a substantially rectangular plate of sheet material such as brass or steel having more or less resiliency and preferably held to a supporting surface by the pair of round or button-head screws 2. This plate is formed wlth two slots 3 extending inwardly from lts opposite sides and preferably inclined upwardly so as to form a more or less laterally elongated tongue 4 connected to the body of the plate 1 by a relatively narrow portion 5 constituting a neck. The extremities 6 of this tongue are rectangular or round in section and serve as trunnions for a rec tangular frame 7 having a peripheral flange 8 extending completely around it. These trunnions enter suitable openings in the flange at the opposite sides of the frame adjacent the bottom thereof and these openings are so placed that when the frame occupies the position shown in Fig. 4, the tongue 4 is bent outwardly from the plane of the body of the plate 1. Any outward movement of the frame on the trunnions as pivots is at first resisted by reason of the engagement of the supporting structure 9 by the edge of the bottom flange of the frame, since such engagement tends to still further bend out the tongue 4. When however the rotation of the frame on its trunnions is continued until the line of engagement of the edge of the flange with the structure 9 passes a neutral position and lies above the line of the trunnions, the spring tongue 4 tends to continue the rotary movement of the frame until this is stopped when the outer face of its bottom flange lies parallel and in engagement with the face of the supporting structure.

With the parts in the positions shown in Fig. 5, a transparent plate 11 of celluloid, glass, or the like may be placed in the frame and thereafter a card or plate 12 having any desired symbols or words on that face adjacent the transparent plate 11. If the frame 7 be now returned to its normal position shown in Fig. 4, it completely covers the supportingplate 1 and effectually retains the card in place; it being noted that said card with the transparent sheet is pressed against the inner face of the frame 7 by reason of engagement of said card by the heads of the screws 2.

While in most cases I mount the frame and its supporting plate 1 on the flat vertical front surface of a drawer, box or file, it may be applied to the inclined surface of a me tallic or other handle 10 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

As shown in Fig. 6, I have so designed and mounted my label holder as to permit it to also fulfil the functions of a handle and for this purpose I provide a finger receiving cavity 15 in the vertical face of a drawer, box or other article or container to be equipped. Across the upper half of this recess which is usually laterallyelongated, I mount a flat base plate 16 of sheet metal, holding it in place by screws 17 at its ends.

\ On this fiat plate as a base I mount the supporting plate 1 in the manner indicated in Figs. 3 and 5 and as before hinge the abel holding frame 7 to this latter plate. )bviously this arrangement of parts operates as previously described, except that the lower part of the base plate 16, which overhangs the upper part of the recess 15, serves as the handle proper by which the drawer, etc., may be pulled out. In some cases even the plate 16 may be omitted and the supporting or back plate 1 with the label holding frame be mounted over the finger recess so as to serve as a handle.

I claim 1. A label holder consisting of a plate of spring material having an elongated portion connected to its body by a relatively narrow neck, means for fixing the body of said plate to a supporting structure, and a frame pivotally engaging the extremities of said elongated portion and holding it in a stressed condition either adjacent said plate or distant therefrom, said frame having a surrounding fiange between the walls of which the plate is adapted to be inclosed and concealed when the frame is in a position substantially parallel with said plate.

2. The combination with a supporting structure, of a label holder consisting of a plate, headed elements holding said plate to said structure, an open faced label receiving frame mounted over said plate, and a label mounted in the frame and held forward therein by said headed members with the frame in a position adjacent the plate.
