Description
.NOI 120,128' i Patented (1ct. 17,1871.
PATENT QFFICE.
THOMAS D. THOMPSON, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEAD-RESTS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,128, dated October 1'7, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs D. THoMPsoN, of the city of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Head-Rests,`
and I do hereby declare that the following speciication, taken in connection With the drawing making a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, in Which- Figure l is a side view of my invention as attached to a chair. Fig. 2 is aback view of the same. Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 are detailed parts.
The nature of my invention consists in forming a head-rest for connecting to chairs, so constructed to be operated and secured in any required position.
To enable others skilled in the art to manufacture and use my invention, I Will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawing, a, Fig. l, is a head-rest, having its front upholstered. On its back is secured the ball c, to which is iitted one end of arm J, With the hinged jaw or clamp i, forming a split socket-and-ball joint section, Fig. 3. In retaining the head-rest in position a camlever, It', is pivoted to 't' so as to operate against arm J in closing the socket-jaws irmly around the ball o,- arm J, Fig. 1, being bent the appropriate shape, its lower end is made with a ball, d, to operate in a socket similar to the one on ball c. b, Fig. 2, is the upper part of a chairback, to which is attached a plate with a dovetail tenon, c, made with its length, as represent ed in Fig. 6. Slide n, Fig. 5, is provided with a dovetail groove to fit easy on tenon e, and, in connection with the hinged jaw or clamp g, forms the socket on ball d. The hinged jaw or clamp g is operated by a set-screw, j', which set-screw at the same time fastens slide lt at any point upon the tenon e. By this arrangement, as in use on dentist chairs, the head-rest can be raised or lowered or moved to one side of the chair or the other, as may be required, to meet any position in performing dental operations.
The advantages are its simplicity, not being liable to get out of order, being compact and durable, With its many positions of adjustment.
I do not claim a head-rest as my invention 5 but what I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The arm J, With the hinged jaw or clamp t' and cam-lever k, in combination with ball c, as attached to head-rest a., and ball d, in combination with hinged jaw or clamp g, set-screw fand slide h, as operated on tenon e, all substantially as described, and for the purpose specied.
