Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented Oct. 24, 1916.

Application led April 6, 1916. Serial No. 89,461.

T0 all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM SCHU- MACHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Flushing, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Applying Rolled Gold- Leaf, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a tool of novel construction for applying a strip of gold leaf or similar material to a paper or other surface which has been previously sized. The tool is so constituted that the gold leaf rollers maybe readily inserted and removed, that an accurate adjustment to rollers of different widths may be effected, and that any wabbling of the leaf applying roller is prevented during use.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tool embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a front view thereof; Fig. 3, a section on line 3 3 Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a section on line 4 4 Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a section on line 5 5 Fig. 1, and Fig. 6, a section on line 6 6 Fig. 5.

The device comprises essentially, a pair of parallel cheeks or side plates 1 and 2, which may be set at different distances from each other, one of the plates being, with the construction shown, fixed, while the other plate is adjustable. The lower end of fixed side plate 1 forms the head of a slotted hub or barrel 3, mounted on a handle 4. In this head is journaled, a set screw 5 which extends axially through the hub and engages a tapped reinforced lug 6 formed on the lower end of plate 2. This lug extends into the body of hub 3, through the slot thereof while the lower edge of plate 2 is made concentric to the hub so as to ride thereon (Fig. 6). It will be seen that by turning screw 5, plate 2 will be caused to either approach or recede from plate 1, the parallelism between the plates being at all times maintained. To each of the plates 1, 2 there is pivoted at 7, an oscillable bearing or holder 8, for the magazine roller 9. This roller is coreless and comprises a spool composed of a strip 10 of gold leaf protected in the usual manner by an interposed strip of paper.

Each holder 8 is formed at its free end with an inwardly projecting circular bulge or protuberance 11 of a diameter to be received within the eye of spool 9. When the side plates 1, 2 are adjusted in the manner above described, such adjustment will be participated in by the bearings 8, so that in this way the distance between the bearings may be made equal to the length of the particular spool to be fitted to the tool. In order to mount spool 9, bearings 8 are swung outward, bulges 11 are sprung into .the ends of the spool, and then the bearings are swung inward (Fig. 3) so that the spool becomes confined between the side plates.

At their upper or free ends, plates 1 and 2 are slotted as at 12 for the reception of the spindle 13 of the striping roller 14, that receives the gold leaf 10 from roller 9, and applies the same to the work. Spindle 13, is headed at its ends as at 15, and protrudes laterally beyond side plates 1, 2. These laterally protruding ends are engaged by hooks or keepers 16 pivoted to the side plates at 7 and carrying finger pieces 17 so that by swinging the hooks over the spindle, roller 14 is removably held to the side plates. Of course, when a magazine roller of a given width is mounted in bearings 8, a delivery roller of corresponding width is mounted in the slots 12, so that a proper cooperation of the parts is at all times maintained.

The upper ends of plates 1 and 2 flank roller 14, with the exception of a segment thereof, which is exposed beyond a cut away section 18 of the plates. This exposed section of the roller is pressed into contact with the work, while the main body of the roller is confined between the plates, which thus serve to steady the same during use.

I claim:

A tool of the character described comprising a relatively fixed side plate, a slotted hub carried thereby, 'a set screw extending axially through the hub, a relatively movable side plate slidably engaging the hub and having a lug that is engaged by the set screw, and means for mounting a paiir of gold leaf rollers on the side plates.
