Description

G. G. UTH.
SAFETY BOX FOB VALUABLES.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 25. 1914.
Patented Oct. 31, 1916.
N m5 W5 A ORNEY.
WITNESSES:
GUSTAX TE GEORG UTE-I, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
V SAFETY-BOX FOR, VALUABLES.
Specification of Letters Patent;
Application filed July 25, 1914. Serial No. 853,215; b
T all whom it may concern 1 Be it known that I, GUsrAvn Gr. Urn, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco,
.State of California, have invented a new and useful Safety-Box for Valuables, of which the following is a specificatlon 1n such 1 full and clear terms as will'enable those 7 skilled in the art to construct and use the same.
This invention relates to a. safety box for valuables and its object is toprovide a secure storage place for jewelry and other valuables to prevent burglars from carrying such things ofi, although at the same time not being of such size as to prevent the box from being carried away as is the case with a safe.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for securing the box in a fixed position in the house, while at the same time the owner may unlock the box from its fixed location without unlocking the cover therefor should it be desired'to take the box out of the house at time of fire or at any other time when it is desired to remove the box completely.
A further object of the invention is to,
provide means whereby the box may be easily removed from its permanent location, while at the same time there is no danger of unlocking the cover and thereby spilling all of the contents when it is sought to remove the box.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing in which the same reference numeral is applied to the same portion throughout, but I am aware that there are many modifications thereof.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the box with the lid open and showing the interior mechanism, Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of the lock used, the lock being shown removed from the box, and Fig. 3 is an end View of the box on a slightly smaller scale with parts thereof broken away to illustrate the working mechanism.
The numeral 1 represents the box, 2 the bottom of the box and 3 the cover for the box. The cover is hinged to thebox at 4: and is provided with hooks 5 for locking the I cover when closed.
The bottom of the box is provided with four openings 7 through which openings hooks 8 on a base plate 9 project. In the bottom of the box there is a slidable plate 10 carrying cross bars 11 and '12, which bars have lugs 13, 14:, 15 and 16 projecting there- Patented Oct. 31,1916.
from in proximity to the hooks 8 on the base plate. The plate 10 is held down inposition by means of a plate 17 which plate has two screws 18 and 19 passing through elongated slots 1n the plate 10 and into the bottom 2 of the box. At the forward end theplate' 10 is extended under the lock and has open ings therein at 19 and'2O to receive-the depending ends 21 and 22 of the cover locks 23 and 24 which engage the hooks 5 when the cover is shut. The two cover locks are carried by a plate 25 which is slidable longitudinally of the lock casing 26 which casing has two holes 26 for the cover hooks 5., A plate 27 is secured to the lock casing 26 by screws 28 to hold the tumblers 29 and slidable plate 25 in place in a Well known manner. The lock casing 26 has a pin 30 against which a plurality of springs 31 bear to hold the tumblers down as illustrated in Fig. 2 with the lock in the open position.
It will be observed that each of the tumblers has three notches 32, 33 and 34, the obj ect being to enable the user to first lock the cover down with one turn of the key, while upon a second turn of the key the box is locked to the base plate 9, thereby securing the box to the house or other structure on which the base plate is installed. The plate" 25 has depending cam surfaces 35 to enable the key 36 to move it longitudinally, all being well known in the art. It is also to be noted that the plate 25 carries 3, lug 37 to secure the plate 25 in a fixed position, locked or unlocked. In order to carry the box from place to place a suitable handle 38 is pro vldcd. The lock'casing is suitably secured then given one turn, whereupon the plate 10 carrying the locking bars 11 and 12 and the locking bars 21, 22 will be moved to the left an amount equivalent to the distance beengaging the bars 11 and 12 with the.
hooks 8.
Having thus described my invention what I claim a snew and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as fol lows, modifications within the scope of the claim being expressly reserved A safety valuable receptacle comprising a box, cover hinged thereto, a base plate having lugs projecting therefrom, a lock to V secure the cover to the box, a flat plate extending across and parallel to the bottom of Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
the box and carrying bars'adapted to cooperate with the projecting lugs to secure the box to the base plate, the lock for the cover and the lock for the base plate being so coordinated that the first turn of a key will engage the lock for the cover, while the sec ond turn of the key will engage one of the looks with the lugs for securing the box to the base plate and a handle secured to the cover for the conveyance of the box. v
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 18 day of'July A. D. 191%,
in the presence of the two subscribed wit- IIGSSBS.
