SHIPPING-PACKAGE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD MOWRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sterling, in the county of VVhiteside and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shipping- Iackages, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

My invention relates to shipping packages. I

In shipping disk gangs of the type used on disk harrows and the like, it has been found that the sharpened edges of the disks are dulled; as, for instance, by engagement with the hard floors or the like as the gangs are rolled over the same. The result has been that it has been necessary to crate the gangs and thus cause inconvenience and additional expense in shipping them; or, if this has not been done, it has been necessary to resharpen a large number of disks, causing delay and inconvenience to the customer and increased expense to the manufacturer or shipper.

My invention has for its object to package a disk in an improved manner whereby the sharpened edge of the same is effectually protected against injury in transit the packing means being of such a character that they may be readily applied to the disk and removed therefrom when desired without making it necessary to crate the gang, the latter being readily moved with the same facility as heretofore by simply rolling the same along on its disks. I attain this object by the provision of a flexible metallic strip, preferably of longitudinally folded sheet metal, which incloses the cutting edge of the disk and is carried around this edgeand connected preferably at its ends, in such a manner as to form an efiicient protector for the disk which may be readily and securely attached thereto, or readily removed therefrom when desired.

In the accompanying drawings I have shown one embodiment which my invention may assume in practice. It is to be understood, however, that the form shown may be modified if desired.

In these drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a disk ready for shipment. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of such a disk. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the strips removed from the disk.

trated a disk 1 of standard type equipped with my improved means for protecting its cutting edge.

As shown, this means comprises a metallic strip 2, preferably formed of a single elongated strip of flexible sheet metal having its edges folded together along a longitudinally extending line so that the two edges of the same are disposed substantially opposite to each other, as shown in Fig. 2. As shown in Fig. 1, this strip extends entirely around the periphery of the disk 1, fitting snugly over the cutting edge thereof and having its sides preferably slightly flared so as to receive snugly the tapered or sharpened cutting edge of the disk. The ends of this strip are shown to be overlapping and fastened together by any suitable means; such, for instance, as a wire 3 passed through suitable spaces or openings 4 in the overlapping ends of the strip and then twisted, the means for attaching the ends being preferably of such a character as to enable the protecting strip or rim to be readily positioned on the disk and readily removed therefrom.

In the operation of placing a protecting strip 2 upon a disk, it is obviously only necessary to spread the same to the desired degree to fit it over the disk, and then unite the ends of the strip by twisting the wire 3, the strip then being securely attached to the disk and only removable therefrom when the wire 3 is intentionally untwisted and the strip sprung outward. It is to be noted that in this construction the protect ing rim is of a type which may be very readily and cheaply manufactured, as the entire strip may be formed in a single operation if desired. It is further to be noted that the rim securely and snugly incloses the cutting edge of the disk, extending a substantial distance beyond the same inward toward the axis of the disk and presenting a rounded outer edge, in such a manner that, should the disk be rolled along upon a hard floor or be struck, the impact would be taken upon the rounded edge of the strip or rim and all injury to the cutting edge of the disk would be thus avoided.

While I have in this application shown one form which my invention may assume in practice, it is, of course, to be understood that various other embodiments thereof performing the same function maybe adopted Without departing from the spirit of my a disk With the cutting edge of the disk 10 invention. disposed between the sides of the strip.
