To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, WrLLIAn: onrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington, inthe county of New flastle, State of Delaware, have invented. a new and useful Device for Picking Up or Lrftmg Fins, Needles, &c. of which the following is a specification.

ll/ly invention consists of a device for picking up or lifting pins, needles, etc., avoiding stooping for that-purpose, the same embodying a magnet or block of metal of magnetic nature, a carrier therefor, and means adapting the block to rock or roll on a carpet or floor, so that its underside will conform to the irregularities of the same and to difl'erent thicknesses say of pins and needles so that the latter will edectively contact w th the magnet and attach them by attraction securely thereto, after which the magnet may be raised and the pins or needles removed therefrom.

The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a pin or needle lifter embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and. 3 deslgnate perspective views of the magnet member of the device. Fig. 4: represents a longitudinal section of said member on line 4l4 fig. 1, and a side elevation of a portion of the carrier therefor. Fig. 5 represents a side elevation on an enlarged scale of the connecting portion of the carrier of the magnet member. Fig. 6 represents a perspective view of'the device in folded condition.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures Referring to the drawings :-]l designates a magnet or block of metal of magnetic nature. Centrally in said block through the same is the opening 2 which widens in downward direction forming an enlarged conoidal chamber 3, in which is contained the washer l, through'which is passed the lower end portion of the string or cord 5, whose end proper is formed into the lmot 6 as a shoulder which occupies the underside of said washer, and so connects the washer with said cord and prevents the latter from being pulled upwardly through the washer, and lilrewise prevents the washer being pulled upwardly through the top of the I opening 2, which as is evident is of con-' srderably smaller diameter than that of the Washer.

lt will be seen that the magnet may be carried by the cord 5 over pins or needles lying on the door, and lower the magnet thereto when they are attracted and they attach themselves to the magnet as before, it being evident that the device is of a simple and inexpensive nature, and operatively convenient for the purpose intended.

In order to cause the bottom of the magnet to conform to the surface of a door or a carpet that may have an irregular surface, or to contact with pins or needles of did'erent thicmiesses or difierent sizes of heads, ll form the washer of a body or head of spherical form, or of a ball-like member, which freely occupies the chamber 3, and so the magnet when contacting with an irregular thing below it, may roll or rock on said washer and so turn to cause its under face to be effective in attracting different objects below the same to be lifted or picked-up regardless of the irregularity of the surface of the floor or carpet, or the difierent con-.

tours or sizes of said objects. ln carrying the plate from place to place by the cord 5, the former rests on said head 4t and is adapted to roll thereon as has been stated, and the wall of the chamber 3 is in frictional contact with said head, and this assists in preventing the cord from being cut or clZrafed directly by the wall of the opening When service of" the device is no longer required, the cord may be wrapped around the magnet, forming of the members a bundle that is small, compact, and convenient for storing away, carrying, etc., but the carrier is provided with the loop '2', whereby the device may be hung on a nail, hook, or other support.
