IGNAI'Z MILONCZYK, OF IVfILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
Application filed December 1, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IGNATZ Minonozrn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Carousels ,and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to the subject of :unuseinent devices and has particular relation to that kind of amusement devices that are adapted for use by children.
The main object of the invention is to pro duce an amusement device of the carousel type that can be used within a house and in which the children furnish the power for operating the carousel, thereby providing both amusement and healthful exercise for the ,children.
The invention contemplates a carousel of such a nature that the same may be used indoors or outdoors, including in its general organization a stationary base having a plat form rotatably mounted thereon, the plat form being equipped with seats for the children and the platform and base being provided with cooperating mechanism for rotating the platform, the controlling means for the mechanism being arranged in proximity to one of the seats so that the occupant thereof can control said mechanism. In addition to the foregoing, means are provided for shielding the platform and the mechanism so that the children will not be exposed to danger of injury.
One simple and practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view of a carousel constructed in accordance with this invention, the section being taken on the line 1-1, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2, Fig. 1.
The improved carousel comprises a base formed of radiating feet 1 having a bearing plate 2 centrally mounted thereon. The plate 2 carries a centrally located upstanding stud 3 and is provided with an annular groove 4 that surrounds the said stud 3 and forms a race for the anti-frictional rollers 5. A suitable platform is formed by the radiating beams 6, the flooring 7 mounted on the beams, and the skirt 8 that depends from the outer edge of the flooring and the outer end Specification of Letters Patent.

of the beams, said skirt being so disposed, that it forms a guard that prevents children crawling beneath the carousel. The platform carries 'upper and lower centrally located plates 9 and 10 respectively, plate 10 having an annular rim 11 formed thereon that engages the anti-frictional rollers Plate 9 has radial arms 12, one of which is provided with a journal 13 for a drive-shaft 14:. The platform is centrally journaled on the stud 3, and above said platform the said stud carries a master gear 15 that in mesh with a pinion 16 carried by the drive-shaft 1d. The arms 12 have u 'istanding sockets 17 at their outer ends in which standards 19 are mounted. Cross braces 20 and 21 connect the standards 19, the brace 20 being equipped with a journal 23 for the upper end of shaft let. Brace 21 has one end of a transmission shaft 24 journaled thereon, said shaft being also journaled to one of the standards 19. nected by the bevel gears 25 and 26. Adjacent its periphery the platform is provided with an upstanding socket 27 in which a standard 28 is mounted, the upper portion of standard 28 having the end of the crank 29 of shaft 24 journaled thereon. Crank 29 is equipped with a suitable hand grip 30.
A plurality of seats are carried by the platform, the seats being in spaced radial relation to form passage-ways therein between, and each seat includes the inner and outer posts 31 and 32, carrying stringers 33 that support the seats 34:, and the outer guard rails 35.
A protecting casing 36 incloses the gearing, the casing being in the form of a cylinder that is closed at the top and is adapted to be fitted around the standards 19. The casing is provided with a vertical slot, the side edges of the slot being outturned to form flanges 37 that suitably engage opposite sides of one of the standards 19, and which may be engaged by a bolt 38 and nut 39 to lock the casing around the standards and the drive mechanism. By releasing the bolt'38 the casing may be readily removed from its protecting position, and thereby give access to the drive mechanism.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the improved carousel is one that may be used in the open or in a house, and that the same is light enough to be readily transported, yet sufliciently strong to withstand Shafts 14: and 24 are conthe hard usage incidental to being operated by children. In this connection it will be noted that the arrangement of the casing 86 and the skirt 8 is such that the users are thoroughly protected from injury.
In operation, the children on the adjacent seats of the carousel furnish rotary movement to the platform by manipulating the crank 29, such operation being of a nature that Will furnish healthful exercise to the children, and in addition the result of said operation of the carousel is a source of amusement for the children.
In a carousel the combination of a base having a bearing plate and an upright pivot shaft extending therefrom, a platform including a series of radially disposed beams, a top plate at the center of the platform apertured to form a bearing for the pivot plate, a bottom plate at the center of the platform apertured to form a second hearing for the pivot shaft, means for securing said plates together and to the beams socket members formed integrally at outer portions of the top plate, uprights secured in said socket members and a drive mechanism carried by said uprights in gear mesh with the pivot shaft.
In testimony that I claim the have hereunto set my hand at I in the county of lliilwaukee and State of lVisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
