MATCH-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 10, 1816. Serial No. 108,256.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILFRED A. DALTON.
and OMER J. RAINVILLE, citizens of the United States, residing at Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Match-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in match boxes, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a match box which can be conveniently carried in the pocket of the user and which will permit of the extraction of matches easily and quickly without removing the cover.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a box from which the matches may be extracted regardless of the direction in which the heads of the matches face, and to also provide a box which will effectively hold the matches against accidental removal.
Still further theinvention aims to provide a box which can be constructed in its entirety from two pieces of sheet metal, and
, also to permit of the cheap, easy and quick Fig. '2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the box is formed, and
Fig. 4 is a like view of the which the cover is formed.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention, a blank is employed which has a back 1, front 2, and sides 3, a, the side 3 connecting the back and front. The back 1 is provided with spaced extensions 5 and with a cut-out 6, the extensions and cut-out being disposed at the front and rear edges of the back, while the front 2 is provided with an extension 7, formed with a circular central cut-out 8 and with elliptical cut-outs 9, disposed adjacent theside edges of the extension 7.
The box blank is folded by first bending the outer end of the extension 7 on the line 10 to form an abutment 11', the latter being preferably convexed, following which the part 12 of the extension is bent so as to incline relative to the front 2 all as shown in Fig. 2. The front, back and sides are now blank from bent into the form of Fig. 1, and a single line of solder then applied at 13 to secure the box assembled.
The cut- outs 6 and 8 register and form recesses into which the matches project and into which the fingers are placed to remove a match. The cut-outs 9 form recesses into which the heads of the matches project, it being apparent that by having a cut-out 9 at each side of the box, the match heads may be removed from either side of the box, thus not necessitating that the matches be placed in the box with all of their heads at the same side of the box.
The abutment 11 is formed with a concave portion 14: so as to provide a trap so to speak to arrest and hold the outermost match. The parts 11 and 12 provide a flexible tongue for the box so as to thus more readily enable the matches to be removed, it being apparent from Figs. 1 and 2 that the ends of the tongue are free of connection with the sides 3 and a of the box. The back 1 has a front upwardly curved flexible lip 15 which cooperates with the tongue formed of parts 11 and 12, and the lip 15 has cut-outs 1717 registering with the cut-outs 9--9 to provide for the reception of the match heads.
The cover 18 has end flanges 19 and a rear flange 20, which flanges are bent down at right angles and may be secured without the use of solder if desired. A tongue 21 formed on the cover is rolled to form a hinge knuckle and the parts 5 of the box blank are also rolled to form hinge knuckles which latter receive the knuckle 21 in the space between the parts 5, a pintle 22 completing the hinge as shown in Fig. 2.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the matches will first engage the abutment 11, which latter acts to regularly guide same or permit their uniform passage to the Patented Feb. 6, 191?.
the box bottom curved upwardly toward the names to this specification in the presence tongue but spaced therefrom to permit a of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
match to pass through said space, the lip WILFREDA. DALTON. having a central and end cut-outs which OMER J. RAINVILLE; 5 register With the respective first named cut- Witnesses:
outs. v r ADA E. HAGERTY,
In testimony whereof We have signed our J. A. MILLER.
