MEANS FOR AROUSING SLEEPERS.

Be it known that I, .losnrii Il. LEAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented ne7 and useful Improvements in Means for Arousing Sleepers, of which the following is a specification.

The main object of the present invention is to provide a device for thoroughly arousing sleepers and insuring that they get up out of bed at the time that they have deterH mined upon the previous evening. Many persons although rendered fully conscious by the sounding of an alarm clock do not thereby recover their full will power and can not make up their minds to get out of bed immediately, the consequence being that, upon the alarm clock ceasing to sound, they sink back into slumber. My device is intended to prevent such action on the part of the sleeper.

A further use to which the device may be put is for changing the form of a bed so as to render it suitable for a sitting position of the occupant either in a sick room or for reading in bed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a bed equipped with my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3.

Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a bed, to the sides of the frame of which are clamped, as shown at 2, upwardly extending plates 3, in the upper ends of which are pivoted shafts 4', to which are secured the free ends of a yoke 6, to which is secured a sheet 7 of canvas or like material. In the normal position of the invention said sheet 7 rests upon the mattress below the bottom sheet. To said shafts 4 are likewise secured arms 8 extending obliquely downward, to the free ends of which arms are secured ends of stretched coiled springs 9, the other ends being secured to collars 10 secured upon the side bars of the bed frame near its head. Said springs tend to raise said sleet from off the mattress, and thus to raise a person lying in bed to a sitting position. f

the cord being automatically wound up on the drum by a spring 15. Against this projection 17 bears the end of a locking arm 18 of a lever 19 pivoted at 21 in a frame 18, the outer end of the long arm 23 of said lever being connected to one end of a link 24, the other end of the link 24 being connected to a wrist pin 2G on a segment wheel 27, which is operatively connected by a train of gears 29 with a shaft 30 connected with the alarm winding key 31 of an ordinary alarm clock 32. The locking arm 18, being opern atively connected with the spring-actuated alarm-sounding shaft 30 is normally held f stationary, as in the ordinary alarm clock, but, at the proper time, is released by the usual trip actuated by the clockwork meehanism. The slope of the projection 17 is such that the spring which aetuates the alarm shaft can also move the free end of the locking arm 18 from oit said projection.

A dash pot 33, the plunger (not shown) of which is operatively connected to an arm prevents the sheet 7 from rising too rapicly.

The mode of operation of the device will be obvious from the foregoing description. Upon winding up the spring of the alarmsounding shaft of the alarm clock and setting the clock for {in}T desired time of rising, then, when the hour is reached for which the alarm is set, first, the alarm sounds for a considerable period, thoroughly awakening the sleeper, and then, at about the end of the ringing of the alarm clock, the link 24 causes the short arm 18 of the lever 19 to be withdrawn from the cam lock, releasing the drum 14 and allowin lthe eanvas sheet to rise to an upright position, and causing the sleeper to assume a sitting position.

By the words upwardly extending position in the claims is meant a position eX- tending more nearly vertical than horizontal.

I claim 1. An arousing attachment for a bed comrising a frame operatively connected to the ged to assume either an upwardly extending or asubstantiall)7 horizontal position, means connected to said frame for su porting a sleeper, means for raising the rame from the latter to the former position, locking mechanism for holding the frame in its latter position, a spring for withdrawing said locking means from its operative position means for preventing the operation of sai dil spring, said frame being free to move from said latter' to said former position when released from said lookin mechanism, and eloek-work mechanism 0r releasing said means.

An arousing attachment for a bed comprising a frame o eratively connected to the bed to assume eit ier an upwardly extending or a substantially horizontal position, means connected to said frame for supporting a sleeper, means for raising the frame from the latter to the former position, locking mechanism for holding the frame in its latter position, a saring for withdrawing said locking means rom its operative position, means for preventing the operation of said spring, said frame being free to move from said latter to said former position whep released from said lockin mechanism, cockwork mechanism for re easing said means, and a dash-pot for controlling said raising means,
