WITNESS FATENT FFlfQE.
IANTHUS E. MARSHALL, OF RICHMOND, CALIFORNIA.
EXPANSIBLE HASP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. f7, 19t?.
Application filed May 17, 1915. Serial No. 28,643.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, IANTHUS E. Mea SHALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Contra Costa and State of California, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in EX- pansible Hasps, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to that class of hasps which are freely eXpansible longitudinally, to be readily adapted to their staples; and has for its object the production of such a hasp which is simpler', and consequently more durable and cheaper' to construct, than any now known to the art.
My invention. consists of a hasp member composed of but two parts having a limited range of relative movement in a longitudinal direction. It is described more fully hereinafter in connection with the aecompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front elevation of my hasp.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is an end section on the line of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 shows a modified form of my hasp, in which the anchor screws are covered by the body of the hasp when in the locked position.
Referring in more detail to the drawings, in all of which like numbers are usedl to represent the same element,-l is an anchor plate adapted to be fastened in any suitable manner to one of two objects to be locked together, as for example, a door, or a chestcover. This anchor plate l is 'of the usual type, and may be fastened to the door or other object in its extended position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, or it may be folded under the body of the hasp, as in Fig. 4, in order that the screw-heads may be covered when the hasp is locked. Connected to the vanchor plate l by the hinge 2 is the plate 3, which has at its outer end the integral wings 4. These wings 4 are bent into the form of hooks to act as guides for the plate 5. Plate 5 has at its inner end similar integral wings 6, so bent as to form guides for the plate 3. Plate 5 also has, at its outer end, the slot 7 4to fit over a staple or keeper 8 of the usual type.
Thus it will be seen that the plate 5 may be slid toward or away from the anchor plate l, the hooked wings 4 and 6 forming guides.
Genies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Washington, D. C.
This sliding movement is limited in one direction by contact between the end of the plate 5 and the hinge 2, and in the other direction by Contact between the guides 4 and 6. In this manner differences in the relative positions of staple and anchor plate, as, for example, 'those caused by the shrinking or swelling of a wooden door, will not .interfere with the proper engagement of the hasp.
Moreover, the integral construction of the guides 4 and G with the plates 3 and 5 respectively renders the manufacture of my hasp extremely simple, and reduces the number of operations necessary thereto to a minimum.
I am aware that minor variations may be made in the form and construction of this hasp without in any way affecting the essential principle involved, and l do not wish to be understood as limiting myself in this regard.
I claim An eXpansible hasp comprising an anchor plate; a primaryplate having its inner end pivotally connected with said anchor plate, and having at its outer end integrally formed wings projecting laterally from its side edges, said wings being bent upwardly and inwardly to form guides; a secondary plate superposed upon said primary plate, said secondary plate having at its inner end integrally formed wings projecting from its side edges, said wings being bent downwardly and inwardly to embrace the edges of said primary plate and to form guides therefor to permit relative lineal sliding movement between said plates, said movement being limited in one direction by the abutment of the inner end of said secondary plate against the pivotal connection of said primary plate and said anchor plate, and in the other direction by the mutual abutment of the lugs upon the two plates; and means carried by the outer end of said secondary plate for temporary attachment to a suitable keeper.
In testimony whereof I have signed .my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
IANTHUS E. MARSHALL.
