Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 15, 1917.
Application filed August 9, 1916. Serial N 0. 113,940.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORTIMER MoKiNziE a citizen of the United States, resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Wrenches; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains t0 make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view of the wrench.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same showing the cap or holder for the spark plug engaged therewith.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of one end of the wrench, showing the valve plug engaged therewith.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of one end of the wrench showing said plugseatedtherein. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the opposite end of the wrench showing the spark plug engaged therewith.
The invention has relation to wrenches, lmving for its object to provide a wrench adapted mainly to take apart the twin six engine of the Packard motor car, but capable of use with other engines, and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, the numeral 2 designates the shank of the wrench, having at one end a head 8, provided with an open-end seat 4: for hexagonal nuts, and in rear of said seat with a transverse perforation or opening 5 for the reception of the outer discharge end 6 of a valve or test-cock plug 7, the pivot rod 8 of the valve of said plug projecting at each end portion laterally of the valve casing at 8, 8, the end 8 being provided with a crank handle 9 and the end 8 being surrounded by a coiled spring 10.
The head 3 is provided, in one side thereof, with a longitudinal recess 11 for the reception of the laterally projecting ends 8,
S of the valve rod, one.of said endscarrying the coiled spring and both ends fitting closely in said recess, said head having also, in one side thereof and adjacent to said transverse opening, a transverse recess 12, communicating with and located at one side of the longitudinal recess 11 and extending at right-angles to the opening 5. The transverse recess receives the crank handle 9 of the valve rod, and is provided at each side of the opening 5 and duplicated again at the other side of the longitudinal recess, there being four recesses 12, in all, so that the crank handle will be received in one of said recesses in diametrically opposite positions of said handle and in reversed positions of the wrench.
The valve plug parts being in the posi tions stated, turning of the wrench will turn the plug and unscrew the same from its seat without undue strain upon orfracture of any part of said plug, and avoiding breaking off of the crank handle of the plug, now so common in unscrewing the plug from its seat.
At the opposite end of the wrench shank, heads 13 and 14 project in opposite directions and at right-angles to the shank, one of said heads 13 being larger than the other and being provided with an interior hexagonal recess 15, for engagement with the exterior wrench seat 16 of the spark plug 17, which is next removed, the spark plug projecting beyond said wrench seat and being received in the cavity 18 of the hollow heads 18 and 14, and thereby protected against injury, now common in removing the spark The other head lei is eXteriorly of hexagonal prismatic form, and engages the interior wrench seat 19 of the cap or holder 20 for the spark plug.
I claim:
1. In a wrench, having a shank, a head at one end of said shank having a longitudinal recess in one side thereof, a transverse opening communicating with said recess, and a transverse recess adjacent to said opening and communicating with and located at one side of said longitudinal recess.
2. In a wrench, having a shank, a head at one end of said shank having a longitudi- In testimony whereof I a'ffix my signanal recess 111 one s1de thereof, a transverse ture, 1n presence of two wltnesses.
