COMBINATION CIGAR-CUTTER, MATCH-EJECTOR, AND INDICATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Auo. 28, 1917.
Application led May 8, 1917. Serial No, 167,349.
To al? whom t may concern Be it known that I. GEORGE FVILLIAM BERRY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Lorna Doone, Old South Head Road, Rose Bay, in the State of New South Wales, Commonwealth of Australia, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Combination Cigar-Cutters, Match-Ejectors, and indicators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved combination cigar cutter. match ejector and indicator and it has been devised particularly for the purpose of providing simple and efficient means whereby the end of. a cigar can be easily and quickly cut, a match simultaneously ejected to a point where it can be convenientlyT grasped and an advertisement displayed conspicuously.
A contrivance possessing the features of utility above described will be of great convenience to tobacco smokers and will be eX ceedingly useful as a medium through which the attention of customers and others may be directed to the price. quality or kind of goods or the like dealt in by a shop-keeper or other person in business.
ln order that the invention may be readily understood reference will now be had to the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings, wherein Figure l is a view in perspective of the invention, and
Fig. 2 is a view in sectional side elevation of Fig. l.
In these drawings like characters of reference have been employed to indicate similar parts in the different views and the letter a designates a casing of rectangular form having its front upper corner rounded off eoncentrically with cylinder or roller Z). The cylinder or roller Z) is provided with end journals c which are mounted revolubly in the sides of the casing a. If preferred the cylinder or roller can be mounted revolubly on a through spindle having its The casing can be secured to a counter or other convenient place by means of screws a1 which pass through lugs a2 formed on the sides of said casing.
A ratchet Z is fitted to one end of the cylinder or roller and engaging with the ratchet is a pawl c which is pivoted to a depressible lever f having its inner end fitted to a rocking spindle g mounted transversely in the casing below the said cylinder or roller.
rlhe pawl e is kept in engagement with the ratchet Z by means of a spring iz, or by weighting the lower end thereof in an approved way.
The forward end of the lever 7 projects through a slot Z formed vertically in the front of the casing and is broadened to form a finger-piece of convenient size and shape.
The periphery of the cylinder or roller is covered with advertisements arranged in such a way that each operation of the lever f will cause the cylinder or roller to rotate sufliciently to display a fresh advertisement behind an opening y' formed in the casing. The opening in the casing can be covered with glass or other transparent material to prevent the ingress of dust to the casing.
The advertisements preferably are arranged lengthwise on the cylinder or roller and in order to insure them registering correctly with the opening y' two control arms k and Z are fitted to the rocking spindle g. When the lever f is depressed the arm Z is forced upward into engagement with the teeth on the rear of the ratchet Z and thereby prevents its further rotation.
When the lever 7 commences to return to its normal position thearm Z is moved away from the ratchet and when the said lever is completing its return movement the arm 7c is placed in engagement with the teeth on the forward and underside of the ratchet d thereby stopping its further rotation.
The pawl can be arranged to move over one or more teeth on the ratchet at each operation according to the size of the latter and the width of the advertisement on the cylinder or roller.
A jaw m projects forwardly from about the center of the rocking spindle g and engages a rearwardly projecting Vportion n of a cutter plate o which is mounted slidably in guides 79 fitted within the front of the casing. The cutter plate g is reciprocated by depressing the lever 7 and if preferred the said plate can be operatively connected to the rocking spindle by means other than the jaw m and rearward projection n.
When the cutter plate o is in its normal or raised position a hole g therein is in register with a hole r in the front of the casing and 1eoth of these holes g and 1 are flared out` wardly in opposite directions to form cutting edges as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
When it is desired to sever the rolled end ot a cigar it is inserted into the hole r and the lever f depressed. The severed end of the cigar falls into a chute s which directs it into a tray or'drawer t in the bottom of the casing. The tray or drawer 2," is inserted into the casing through an opening in the side thereof and it can be withdrawn convenicntly for the purpose of emptying the contents when desired.
lVhen the lever 7 is released the cutter plate o and the other operative parts of the apparatus are returned to their normal position by means of a spring` u which is secured to the bottom of the casing and bears against the underside of the said cutter plate as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. It will be obvious that the operative parts can be returned to their normal posit-ions by a spring or springs arranged in a variety of different ways.
pair of arms o are titted to and project rearwardly from the rocking spindle f/ and the rear ends of said arms Q) bear upon the underside of or are otherwise operatively connected to the lower end of a match agitating and delivering plate or slide w. The plate or slide 'w is mounted in guides 'w1 arranged in line with the rearwardly inclined front ot a match containing receptacle a; formed partly within and partly above the rear part of the casing with the bottom inclining downward toward the front to direct the matches in the receptacle toward the plate or slide w.
The upper end of the plate or slide w is rounded at 102 and beneath the said rounded port-ion is a horizontal slot w3 which is large enough to accommodate a single match but not large enough to accommodate two matches, the bottom wall of the slot w3 being inclined at the same angle as the bottom ot the receptacle, and the plate normally occupying a position with the bottom wall of `the slotl in line with the bottom of the receptacle, as shown in F ig. 2.
When the plate or slide w is thrust upwardly by the operation of the lever f a match gravitates into the slot L03 and is carried upwardly therein until it is opposite an opening or slotI 104 in the front of the match receptacle through which it gravitates into a tray Q05 formed on the front of the receptacle, the bottom wall ot the slot w* also beinginclined at the same angle as the bottom wall of slot 10? and the bottom of the receptacle. rlhe inclining ot the bottom wall of the Aslots in the plate and receptacle facilitates the gravitation of a match into the slide slot and from said slot through the receptacle slot wt.
rlhe operation of the plate or slide w agitates the matches in the receptacle and tends to bring them all into alinement to facilitate their entrance to the slot ws in the said plate or slide and their conveyance to the tray co5.
rfhe lower end of the plate or slide fw is fitted with a spring y which is adapted to bear against an abutment y1 on the front wall of the receptacle when the said plate or slide is complet-ing its upward travel. riihe object of the spring is to provide a buffer action to prevent any jar or knock when the plate or slide is completing its upward travel and in order to insure the match passing correctly from the slot w3 to the tray wf. The spring y also prevents the plate or slide w amming when in its raised position.
The receptacle for the matches is open at the top and is provided with a slide :rl or hinged cover ot approved design.
rlhe top or other ajiproved part of the casing is provided with means 'for holding` a removable piece of material e upon which the matches can be struck. The said means may comprise a guide .211, a clamping plate e2 and a. screw constructed and arranged as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
It will be readily understood that the invention may be modiied in a variety of ways without departing from the spirit and scope of the same and that it can be designed to eject tooth picks, drinking straws and other small articles of a like nature and simultaneously display advertisements.
