Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 13, 1917.
Application filed August 11, 1915. Serial No. 45,001.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMEs KELLoec, a citizen oi the United States, residing at Little F alls, in the county of Passaic, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Circuit-Closers for Burglar-Alarms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
. This invention relates to circuit. closers for burglar alarms.
The object ofthe invention is to provide a circuit closer for burglar alarms which is especially designed for-application to'a stairs, and which .will be simple, durable and eflicient, and which can be readily and quickly applied to an ordinary stairs.
W'ith the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details, of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims. I
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stair step embodying the invention;
Fig. 2, a transverse section through the step with the parts in the position they would occupy normally;
Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. 2 with the parts in the position they would occupy when the movable tread element is depressed to'close the signal circuit of the device; v
Fig. 4, a plan view of what is shown in Fig. 1 partly in section and with the movable tread element omitted;
Fig. 5, a view looking at the under side of the movable tread element, and
Fig. 6, a diagrammatic view showing the signaling circuit.
Referring to the drawings A indicates a fragment of a stair including a step 10. This step 10 comprises a fixed tread portion 11 having a recess 12 therein and in which recess is engaged a movable tread portion 13.
a suitable passage 16. Also mounted in the base of the recess 12 is a plurality of spring members 17 disposed respectively. adjacent the contacts 1 1. The movable tread portion 13 is connected to the fixed tread portion 11 by means of a plurality of-bars 18. Mounted on the under side 0* the movable tread portion13' is a plurality of contacts 19 adapted to engage respectively the contacts 14:.- The contacts 19 are connected by a wire 20 which extends through the passage 16. This wire 20 is connected to one of the poles of a battery 21 and the other pole of this battery is connected by a wire 22 to an electric bell 23, the latter being also connected with the wire 15.
It will be obvious that normally the spring members 17 will hold the contacts 19 out of engagement with the contacts 14. However. as soon as sufficient weight has been applied to the portion 13 same will be depressed and all or certain of the contacts a 19 will engage corresponding contacts 14 and close the bell circuit to ring the bell 23. By providing a plurality of contacts 14 and 19 it will be obvious that the circuit which rings the bell will. be closed whether the weight is applied centrally of the portion 13 or at the ends of said portions. The circuit of the bell 23 may be wired so as to dispose the bell at any convenient locality and a switch may be included in said circuit so as to render the alarm inefiective when desired. a
, What is claimed is The combination with a stair tread member having a recess in its upper face extending through the front face of the member and having a passage through the end wall.
of the recess, of a contact secured to the bottom of the recess adjacent the front, a circuit wire extending from the contact outwardly through said passage, a movable tread member disposed in the recess and coinciding therewith, a contact on the under side of the movable member in position to engage the first named contact upon downward movement of the movable member, a circuit wire extending from the second contact outwardly through said' passage; means= for holding the movable member normally with its contact out of engagement with" tliaiL'Ofifihfi recess bottom and" flexible bars secured each upon both tread members from front to rear thereof. In testimony whereof, I aifix my signature,
in the presence of two Witnesses.
