1,250,691; Pa tent9d Dec.18,1917. /5 f r /7 /5 I QT If J Mid JUN I To all whom it may concern: e
Be itfknown that I, BRYAN B. STALTER. a citizen. of the United States, residingf at Harpster, inthe county of lVyandot, State ance with vthe invention,, the. sarne being BRYAN n srarrnia'or naars'rnaomoi-y 1 ro DiNG CHAIR. 1
of Ohio, have invents certain fnew' and useful Improvements in v Folding Chairs; and I do hereby declareth'efollowing to be I a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it 'appertains to make.
and use the same. 7
Th s invent on is an folding chair; I l e Chains of the type specified 1n the present application are particularly adapted foruse in theaters and like places and anobject of the invention is to arrange the same in pairs in such a. manner that an aisle may be formed between the chairs 'of each pair by adjusting the same to their folded positions.
Another object is to provide a chairofsimple and inexpensive construction which maybe readily and quickly folded and unfolded to the desired positions.
Theinventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of: mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in theaccome panying drawing wherein V Figure 1 is afront elevation of a pair of chairs constructed and arranged in accord- Fig. 4 is a front elevation of one of the chairs in folded or inoperative position.
i Fig. 5 is .a side elevation of the chair in folded position. f
Fig. 6 is a sectional view showing the manner of connecting the arm to the adjustable back section.
In carrying out the invention, each of the chairs is provided with a base 10 having a socket 11 at its upper end for receiving the standard 12 of the chair, a set screw 13 being employed for securing the standard in adjusted positions'and arranged adjacent the socket 11 is a guide groove 14 for a purpose which will appear in the course of the description.
Each chair preferably comprises a stationary back section 15. formed integrally with the standard 12 and having connected to one. I

the adj ustable back section 17 provided jad acent it'sjfree vertical edge with a support ing bracket 18 and aplate '19 havingthe. Ttransverse slot 20 therein for a purpose to Preferably hinged'lat to the bott-omof the stationary back section 151 is the main v thereto. by hinges 23 the auxiliary adjustableiseat section 24 whicli,'when the chairis adjustable seat section 22 havingconn'ected in operative position, rests upon-and is'sup portedby the bracketl The main seat: v section 22 has pivotedjthereto at 25 one end of aguiding element 26 the other end of which extends into the guide slot 14; of the is inoperative position.
standard and engages thelower end thereof f to aid in supporting" the seat when the same hinged at 28'and provided with a stud'29 extending from its inner end, and adapted to engage in the slot 20 in theplate 19 when the arlnfis in operative'position andin View of the fact that thehead ofthe stud engages between-the plate and the adjustable back section17; it :will be obvious that the back and said sections of the chairmay be covered with'any desirable material" not shown. A j 'j I" coil sp'ringf30 hasfoneend-connected to the" bottom edge of the adjustable back section 17 and thebottomofthe auxiliary seat section 2& and is adapted to assist in the fold in'g' operation of the chairnow to be described. I Vhen folding the chair the arm 27 is first swung inwardly about its hinges into engagement with thetop of the auxiliary seat section 24 and thereby disengages the stub 29 from the'plate 19, after which the main and auxiliary seat sections are swung upwardly about the hinge 21 and into engager'nentwith the back sections. The auxiliary seat section is then grasped and swung about its hinges 23 to the position shown in Figs.
4 and 5 and by so adjusting this seat section it will be apparent that the spring 30 is placed under tension and when said auxiliary seat section has reached its folded position the spring will be sufficiently expanded to exert a pull upon the adjustable stantially at right angles to the stationary back section15. I I v back section to which it is connected and thereby swing said section to a position sub In arranging the chairs, embodied in the present 1nvent1on, 1n a theater or other like place the same are preferably groupedin pairs, as shown in Fig. 1, with the adjustable back sections and auxiliary seat sections of seat'section and supportedby said bracket when the chair is in operative position, an arm lnngedly connected to said auxiliary the chairs of each pair adjacent eachother individual chair is provided'with one arm I 27 only, it is proposed to secure a stationary arm 31 to the floor and between the side edges of adjacent chairs opposite those edges thereof to which the adjustable back and auxiliary sections are secured. I
iVhat is claimed is I l. A folding chair comprising a stationary back section, an adjustable back section hinged to one of the vertical edges thereof, a supporting bracket carried by said adjustable back section, a slotted plate also carried by said back section, a main seat section hinged to said stationary back section, an auxiliary seat section hinged to the main seat section and supported by said bracket when the chairis in operative position, an arm hingedly connected to said auxiliary seat section, and a stud carried by said arm and engaging'in the slot in said plate to aid in supporting the seat sections in operative position.
2. A folding chair comprising a stationary back section, an adjustable back section hinged to one of the vertical edges thereof, a supporting bracket carried by said adjustable back section, a slotted plate'also carried by said back section, a main seat section hinged to said stationary back section, an
auxiliary seat section hinged to the main Copies of this patent may be obtained for seat section, a stud carried by said arm and engaging in the slot in said plate to aid in supporting the'seat sections in operative position, and a spring connection between said adjustable back section and auxiliary seat section for exerting a pull upon the former to adjust the same to folded position S. A folding chair comprising astation;
ary back section, an adjustable back section hinged to one of the vertical edges thereof, a'supporting bracket carried by said adj ustable back section, a slotted' plate also carried by said back section, a main seat section hinged to said stationary back section, an
auxiliary seat section hinged to' the mainv seat section and supported by said bracket when the chair is in operative position, an
arm hingedly connected to said auxiliary seat section, a stud carried by said arm and engaging in the slot in said plate to aid in supporting the seat sections in operative position, a spring connection between said .ad-
justable back section and auxiliary seat sec tion for exerting a pull upon the former to adjust the same to folded position,'a standard carried by said stationary back section, a base for the chair having a socket therein for receiving said standard and also provided with a guide groove, and a guiding element pivoted to the main seat section and engageable in said groove whereby to support and brace said seat sections. In testimony whereof,- I aflix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
