To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS SHEPHERD, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Oldham, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Lamp and Shade Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has reference to an improved combined lamp and shade holder, and has for its object the provision of a new and improved device of this class particularly adapted for the accommodation of a hanging or depending light and its shade.

The invention consists in the provision of a socket shell comprising a suitably curved projection provided with holes or slots in which slide curved fingers bent at an angle at one end, and at the other fitted to operate with a circular spring ring. This socket shell and the curved fingers are adapted to form the gripping jaws which maintain the lamp shade in position. One end of the socket shell is formed to accommodate the lamp and its attendant parts and the other for attachment to any suitable fitting. This second end may be adapted to support the porcelain or other insulation used in the case where the combined lamp and shade carrier is adapted for use with electric light.

In order that my invention will be more readily understood and carried into practice, reference is hereby made to the accompanying drawings in which I have illustrated a complete device of the above mentioned type designed for the accommodation of depending electric light globes.

In these drawings, Figure 1 is an elevational view of a combined lamp and shade holder constructed in accordance with my invention.

In these drawings wherein like numerals indicate like parts wherever occurring, the numeral 1 designates the socket shell which is of hollow form and is constructed with a projection and downwardly curved middle portion 2 in which are provided four or more holes or slots 8 through which slide suitably curved fingers 4 which constitute gripping jaws for the lamp shade 5. These fingers are connected at their top ends by means of a spring wire ring 6 which passes through a circular tube 7 which is divided into four pieces as indicated in Fig. 3, each piece being soldered or otherwise fixed to the top of one of the curved fingers 4. 'The lower ends 8 ofthese fingers which are preferably made of square section are bent at right angles, all in the same direction, to

form a ring-like support for the lamp shade which is gripped between the lower ends 8 of the curved fingers and the lower edge of the downwardly curved middle portion 2 of the socket shell 1.

The lower portion 9 of the socket shell 1 is of cylindrical form and is provided with the usual bayonet slot 10 for holding the base of the electric lamp bulb in position.

For supporting the porcelain insulating member 11 which carries the spring contact buffers 12, I provide at the top of the socket shell 1, projections 13, adapted to engage with slots 14 in the sides of the insulating member 11 near the upper end. The said top part of the socket shell is externally threaded and has two or more saw cuts 15 made in the sides, while the hollow binding nut 16 when screwed in position effectively locks the insulating member 11 in place.

The porcelain member 11 I preferably form of the shape shown in Fig. 6, with two curved slots or cavities 17 extending from the top of the member to the upper part of the base. Resting on the base within the slots 17 are arranged the binding posts or terminals 18 to which are attached the sockets for the spring contact buffers 12. The flexible wire leads to the binding posts or terminals 18, are conveniently housed in the cavities 17 as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 6 and 7.
