Application led ctober 20, 1917. Serial No. 197,624.
To @ZZ whom z't may concern:
Be it known that l, WALTER W. W'INTON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Bank-Check Protector, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Among the principal objects which the present invention has in view are: to preventchanging the intent as expressed by writing on a check; to render it substantially impossible to change the engrossing or 1mprint of a check of the character mentioned; to avoid the use of machines, the operation of which may be simulated or duplicated; and to provide means for accomplishing the above-stated purposes, which may be produced cheaply. v
Drawings.
Figure 1 is a face view of an apparatus constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention;
2 is a cross section of the same, the section being taken as on the line 2-2 in l `ig.-1;
Fig. 3 is a similar view of a modified form of the invention, showing in conjunction therewith a check engrossed and protected by the present apparatus;
Fig. al is a cross section of the same, the section being taken as on the line H in Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section of the modified form of the invention, the section the line 5-5 in-Fig. 3.
Description.
As seen in the drawings, a folder constructed ofcardboard or liber has a series of slits 11 oppositely disposed adjacent the upper` edge of the folder. The lower end section 1Q, of the folder is overturned as shown best in Fig. 2 of the drawings, to form a pocket within which the lower section 13 bf the transfer sheet 14 is placed. The section 13 is furnished with a series of score lines 15. The lines 15 are provided to regulate the tearing or severance of sections of the sheet 14 when it is desired to shift the same on the folder 10.
The slits 11 above referred to, are spaced apart distances equal to the distance separating the lines 15. This enables the operator to place the upper corners of the sheet 14 through the various slits 11 to steady the l Shcetl-L whenheld by the end section 12. The section 13 of the sheet 14C is held firmly within the pocket thus formed by the section 12, by a serrated or burred section 16 with which the folder 10 is provided.
It has been found that under proper conditions if a check is engrossed or has written thereon by means of a typewriting machine,
words and numbers indicating a certain amount and other data, such as the names of the payee and payer, the fiber of the paper is opened by the pressure and becomes stained or colored by the color medium 17 on the sheet 14. When, therefore, an attempt is made to erase or otherwise alter the intent of the check, it will be found impossible to entirely eradicate the ink from the paper and particularly from the liber at the interior thereof, owing to the fact that the ink deposited by the pen or type on the one surface sinks into the body of the paper from one side to mingle with the body of the ink imparted to the back of the check b y the color medium on the sheet 14.
When and as the medium 17 becomes eX- hausted in any particular point, one of the sections at the lower edge of the sheet, as indicated by the lines 15, is removed from the sheet and said sheet is then readjustedy 0n the folder 10, and after proceeds in the forth.
The modification shown in Figs. 2 to 5, inclusive, consists in providing a transfer sheet 18, the entire surface whereof is provided with color medium. The score ines 15 when imparted to the sheet 18, inclndes the" portion coated with the color medium. The transfer sheet 18 in the modified form of the inventiomis held in position on the folder 10 by overturned tab sections 19. The sections 19 have burred portions 20, which operate to grip the sheet 18 to hold it in service position on the folder 10.
lrt will be noted that the extremities 21 of the end sections 12 are adhered to the body of the folclor 10 to form pockets for retaining the transfer sheets 14 and 18. Also, the sections 19 in the modified form of the invention shown in Fig. 3, have sections 22 which are attached by any form of adhesive to the bodyof the said folder.
the operation theremanner above set 1. A protector 'as characterized comprisgai ing a transfer sheet having prearranged severing sections disposed adjacent the loafer edge osaid sheet to he eliminated 'from said sheet for altering the operating receive the upper corners of said transfer sheet when the lower edge thereoil rests in said pocket; and a coloring medium disposed on said sheet for imprinting on the haelr ol" a device superposed thereon for being imprinted thereupon,
2. .t protector as characterized comprising a transfer sheet having prearranged severing sections disposed adjacent the lov-7er edge or said sheet to be eliminated from said sheet for altering theV operating position of seid sheet; a folder constructed 'of relatively 'hard material having formed at one edge thereof a poelet for holding said transfer sheet, said folder having adjacent the corners of the opposite edge ot said folder a series oiinclined slits adapted to receive the upper corners of said trans-ter sheet the lower edge thereoiE rests in said pocket; a coloring medium disposed on said sheet for imprinting on the hack of a device superposed thereon for heing iinprinted thereupon; and means provided in said folder for holding in service said sheet, said means embodying burred sections operatively connected with said folder.
3. A protector as characterized comprising a transfer sheet having prearranged severing sections disposed adjacent the lower edge of said sheet to he eliminated from said sheet for altering the operating position of said sheet; a folder constructed of relatively hard material having formed at one edge thereof a pocket for holding said 'transfer sheet, said folder having adjacent the corners of the opposite edge of said folder, a series of inclined slits adapted for receiving the upper corners of said transfer sheet when the lower edge thereof rests in said pocket; a coloring medium disposed .I
on said sheet for imprinting on the hack of a. device superposed thereon for being imprinted thereupon; and means provided in said folder for holding in service said sheet, said means embodying leurred sections integrally formed With said Jfolder.
