Application led July 28, 1917, Serial No. 183,287. y
To all whom z't may concern.'
Be it known that we, THOMAS J. FEGI'EY and GEORGE O. LEOPOLD, citizens of' the United States, and residents of' Philadel-L phia, county of Philadelphia, State of Pennj l l tion 9 of the vise, which carries the jaw sylvania, have invented. certain Improvements in Vises, ofy which the following is a specification.
Our inventionrelates to certain improvements in vises of the type known as universal vises, i. e., capable of being secured to a bench and moved to different positions and secured in the position to which` they' are adjusted.
One object of 'our invention is to design a vise of this typeso that the parts can be accurately and cheaply manufactured and which will retain the body portion of the vise `in any position to'which it is adjusted.
A further Object ofthe invention is tov provide a single wrench carried by the vise and applicable either to the mechanism for holding the device horizontally, or for holding it against rotary motion.
The invention also relates to details which will be vfully described hereinafter,l reference being had to the accompanying drawings, inv which:
Figure 1 is aside view of a vise illustrating our'invention;
F Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2,-
Fig.73 is a detached perspective view of the adjustable carrier;
Fig. 4: is a plan view showing the wrench applied to the lower head, the section being taken on the line Jr-4, Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a detached erspective view of the screw bolt for hol ing the body portion to the carrier; and
Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing the tubular bolt for holding the carrier to the base.
Referring to the drawings, 2 is a base preferably secured to a bench in any suitable manner by hooks, or other fastenings, and projecting from the base are two uprights 3 having cylindrical openings therein for the reception of a round bar 4, which forms a trunnion for a carrier 5. This bar is rigidly secured to the uprights by pins 6, clearly shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2. The carrier 5 is made as shown in Fig. 3 and has two jaws 7 and 8 spaced apart and arranged to be drawn together by a bolt so asv to cause the carrier to be clamped firmly to the lbar 4L after it is adjusted in a given position.
Mounted on the 'carrier is the body porflange 12`adapted to a recess in the jaw 8 of' the carrier." yOn turning the bolt in one direction, the jaws of carrier are drawnv toward each other so as to clamp the carrier firmly to the bar, and, on the reverse movement, the jaws are separated. Y
`Extending through the tubular bolt is a bolt 13 having a shoulder 14' bearing against a hardened washer 24 at the reduced portion ofthe jaw 7 of the carrier 5, and on 'the reduced portion 15 of theE bolt is a screw thread adapted to a threaded opening in a nu`t-`16 having'a tapered periphery adapted to a tapered opening 17 in the body 9. The nut 16 has an elongated extension 18 adapted to an opening 19 in the upper portion of the carrier 5, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the nut will not turn independently of the carrier when the body portion is turned. The lower end of the bolt 13 is enlarged, as at 20, and on this extension is a hexagonal head 2l of the same size as the head 11 of the bolt 10. 22 is a flange on the head, which prevents the wrench 23 from being disengaged from the bolt 20. The wrench 23 has a hexagonal opening which is adapted either to the head 11 or to the head 21. The reduced portion 20 of the bolt allows for the free movement of the wrench into either of the two positions.
By the construction, as above described, the carrier can be turned on the bar so that the device will assume any position desired, and the body portion 9 can be turned horizontally on the carrier so that it will assume any position desired. The two parts can be locked on turning the two screws by the single wrench 23.
Mounted on the body portion 9 is the vise proper consisting of a fixed jaw `25 and a movahlejaw 263 This movable jawhas a base 27adapted^fto rest onrthe'fbody 9 land'E hasv an extension 28 through which'passes' the c1ampnggsorewaf29,A provided'V at 'ones,eI1o'l.- 5 withl azloosely.; mounted bar 30: fbyywhich 'fit is turned. This screw 29 is attached to the Xed jaw 25 so that on turning the Screwf' the jaw 26 is moved toward or from the jawin 25.
