INVENTUR WILL/AM "ROLL/U5 WILLIAM KROLLIUS, OF SAN FRANCISCO. CALIFORNIA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 23, 1918.
Application filed September 29, 1917. Serial No. 193,922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM KnoLLIUs, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Skate-Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and etl'ective device for sharpening the blades of ice skates.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side view of my improved device; Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view; i i 4- is a cross sectional view.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a cylindrical block of abrasive material. such as emery. It is held with a tight grip in a holder 2 of the same length as the block 1 in form nearly a complete cylindrical tube, having longitudinal edges spaced apart by a distance slightly greater than the blade of an ice skate. Said holder is normally of the same diameter as the emery block, so that, when the latter is placed thereinto, the holder holds the block with a firm grip. To said holder is secured a guide piece In the present instance I have shown it secured by means of tongues t punched out of the bottom of the guide piece and extending through holes 6 in the metal of the container and bent in opposite directions from each other. However, it may be secured by ordinary rivets. The middle portion of the guide piece closely surrounds the middle portion of the holder, and, extending from its middle portion, said guide piece has parallel sides 7 from which are punched out tongue 8, bent inwardly, and apertnred, as shown at 9, to provide supports for the inner ends of shafts 11, on which are loosely mounted rollers 12 of .tiber or other suitable material, the outer ends of said shafts being secured in tlanges 13, bent inwardly or to ward each other from said sides 7. Said fiber rollers extend past said flanges and tongues, and bear with a pressure due to the resiliency of the metal of the guide piece against opposite sides of the blade of the skate. The edge of said blade bears against the cylindrical surface of the emery block exposed between the adjacent; longitdtlinat edges of the holder.
It will be seen that by means of this device the edge of the blade may be sharpened so as to be concave in a transverse direction which is the form desired by skaters. Also it obvious that, should the exposed surface of the cylindrical surface of the emery block become flattened by use, said emery block can easily be driven longitiulinally out, of the holder and re-inserted so as to present a new cylindrical surface between its edges.
In a skate sharpener, a cylindrical block of abrasive material, a holder therefor of spring metal fitting tightly around said block, and carrying spaced edges extending parallel with the axis of the block, and a guide piece secured around the side of said holder opposite said spaced edges and having parallel sides terminating in. inwardly extending flanges, the inner edges of the flanges being spaced from each other to permit a skate blade to pass between them, tongues bent inwardly from said sides, parallel shafts supported at their ends by said flanges and tongues, and imti-friction rollers around said shafts.
