J. M. ZUMWALT.
ADJUSTABLE TRY SQUARE.
APPLICATION man Auchzz. 1911.

JAMES M. ZUMTWALT, or BUENA jvrsrn,
'Tocll whoiiv'it mmy/concern."
Be it known that I, JAMES M. ZUMWALT, a citizen of the United States,res1dmg at tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apper talus to make and use the same.
The invention relates to an adjustable try 1 square for irregular surfaces.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of try-squares and to provide a simple, practical and efficient try-square equipped with an irregularly shaped blade and a straight handle or stock to enable it to fit siding and the like and equipped with means for enabling it torest in proper position and lie perfectly flat upon the work so that a straight line may be accurately drawn for making a square out.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a try-square of this character which will be capable of adjustment to enable to be used for marking material. for either a right or left hand out.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed outin the claim hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claim, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a try square constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view showing the arrangement of the blade upon a piece of sid ing With the handle or stock against the side edge of the material. q
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion of a rtonrna, assrenoa or Specification pf Patent. li iieanbnfiied August 22, 1917. s erarno. lancer.
ADJUSTABLE wester square, the outline of the pivoted end of the bladebeing shown in dotted lines.
p the invention, the try-square comprises in its construction a handle or stock 1 provided at oneend with a slot or bifurcation 2 which receives the inner end 3 of an irregularly shaped blade a mounted on' a pivot5 and adapted toswing to either side of the stock or handle 1. q The pivot 5 consists of a bolt or screw equipped with a nut 6 and piercing the bifurcated end of the stock or handle 1. The nut is provided with a tail or handle 7 but any other suitable means may of course be employed for enabling the nut to be turned to clamp the blade.
The blade 4, which has straight inner and outer portions, is also provided with a curved connecting intermediate portion 8 and it conforms to the configuration of a piece of siding 9 so as to lie contiguous to the surface of the same with the handle or stock 1 fitting against the side edge lO of the siding. This will enable the siding to j be accurately marked off for a square cut and in order to allow the blade to rest fiat erably formed by a transverse pin 12 and located inthe plane of the inner portion of the blade so that one or. the other of the laterally projecting supporting portions 11 will rest upon the material when the blade isat either side of the stock or handle. The ordinary square, when applied to a siding, will have its blade touching the same only at the high points of the material and it is exceedingly difficult todraw an accurate line to make a square cut, but by shaping the blade of the square to fit the irregular surfaceof the material and providing supportingineans at the other end of the stock or handle, the square will rest firm and steady sun-tra ts women. in; flzuirwat'noreunna vista, rnonrnap 1 upon the material and in proper position for accurately marking the same. The later ally projecting supports Will enable the pivoted to the stock or handle at one end thereof to swing to either side of the same, and projections extending laterally from the "stock or handle at the opposite end thereof and arranged to rest upon the material in spaced relation With the blade when 15 the blade is in either position, whereby'the blade Will be adapted to be placed perfectly flat against the material Without liability of turning While the material is being marked.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature 20 in presence of tWo Witnesses.
JAMES M. ZUMWALT.
