Original application filed October 24, 19
a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and This invention relates to fastening de vices.
The object of the'invention is to provide a simple and practical fastening for the lids of boxes, crates and other containers. Particularly, it is the object of the invention to provide a fastening device which will securely lock and brace the lids of knock-down shipping crates of the type shown in my copending application Serial No. 127,457, filed October 24, 1916, of which this application is a division. In said application, the lid of the crate closes within a top frame, the latter being rigid with the sides and ends of the box when the latter is set up, and the fastening device being operative to secure the free edge of the lid to the frame.
With the above objects in view, and such others relating to the details of construction as may hereinafter appear, my invention will now be fully set forth and described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view ofa portion of a box having my invention applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of an angle plate,
Fig. 3 is a similar view of the slidable' angle plate,
Fig. 4 is a sectional view through the box, and r Fig. 5 is a further sectional View showing the fastening device opened.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents the front side of a box or crate along whose upper edge is sup ported a portion 2 of a top frame. A lid or cover 3 is hinged to the top frame, and is so constructed that its forward edge seats in a rabbet 4 which is formed along the rear edge of the portion member 2.
Secured upon the top of the lid or cover Specification of Letters Patent Patefited Sept. 24, 19 18. 16,' Seria1No. 127357;. Divided and this application filed September 27, 1917. Serial m; 193,491.
3 is the 'member 5 of anangle plate which extends forwardly over the frame portion 2, when the lid is closed, and has its other member 6 downturned' so that it'will overlie snuglythe outer edgeofithe .top frameportion 2'when the lid' is closed Any suitable elements such as the screws 7 may be. em-
ployed to secure member 5 to'the lid. The
angle plate described is received within the angle of a second angle plate including the members 8 and 9 that are disposed respectively against the outer faces of the members 5 and6. The slide plate 8 is held in position upon the base plate 5 by meansof a headed pin 10 which is carried by the latter and projects through a slotll in the slide'plate. The downturned end 6 is provided with an aperture 12, and the tongue 9 has securely fixed therein a pin 18 which is axially alined with the aperture 12, so that when the slide plate 8 is slid rearwardly, the pin .13 will enter the aperture 12. Also, the portion 2 of the top frame of the box is provided with a recess 14 which registers with the aperture 12 when the lid is closed, so that continued rearward movement of the angle plate will cause the pin 13 to shoot into the recess and thereby lock the lid to the top frame.
In order to provide a means for sealing the lid against unauthorized opening, I form through the portion 2 and the side 1 a passage 15 which registers with an aperture 16 formed in the base plate 5. Alsoin the member 8 is formed an aperture 17 which registers with the opening 16, when the outer angle plate is in looking position. Then, a sealing wire may be passed through the continuous opening thus presented and may be sealed in a usual manner.
It will be apparentthat while I have described the device in its application to a particular box structure, it may be applied to practically any structure in which the lid swings down within or upon a side member.
plate adapted to be carried by the lid of a box and having its forward end downturned to contact the edge of the box, a slide plate carried by the base plate and overlying the latter substantially throughout its length, a doWnturned portion on the outer end of' the slide plate adapted to contact --With the downturnedportion of the base plate, a lock pin carried by the slide plate and adapted to be engaged With a recess in the box When the downturned portions are brought into contacting relation.
2. A, fastening device for boxes comprising a pair of angle plates disposedonewithe in the angle of the other, each having one side member slidably connected with the cortheouter plate having a pin projecting from its other side member, disposed and proportioned to engage said perforation and pass into and out of projecting position beyond the inner face of the perforated member.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
