COMBINED DOOR AND WINDOW.
esser,
Z '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM RoMU- TENDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have in- U vented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Doors and Windows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an outwardly swinging door hav ing counterweighted sliding window sashes which will form a tight closure against 1n' gress of dust, ram, snow and cold a1r, whichwhen locked from the inside cannot be opened or removed from the outside by pulling the hinge pins, which will serve both as a door and ordlnary window for openmgs upon porches, balconies or the like, which will afford ample ventilation and will facilitate cleaning the window glass and admit of the use of ordinary. screens and extra outside or storm windows; to prevent sagging andfacilitate opening and closing the door; to facilitate the operation of the sliding sashes; and generally to simplify and improve the construction and operation of glazed doors of this class.
The invention consists in the construe; tion arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter particularly described and pointed out in the claims.
tion on the line 3-3, Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an in In the accompanying drawing like characters designate the same parts in the sev- Figure 1 is an inside elevation of a com bined door and window embodying the in vention; Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1;.Fig. 3 is a horizontal secside elevation, the inside casing being omitted and parts being broken away and shown in section; Fig. 5 is an enlarged plan view of the swinging frame, the weight box being shown in section; Fig. 6 is an, en-
larged detail view showing the arrangement Specification of Letters Patent.

an inside casing 5 and an outside casing 6 are nailed or attached.
An outwardly swinging or opening door and window frame, composed of stiles 7 and 8, a top rail9 and a downwardly and outwardly inclined base or bottom rail 10, and provided with an outside casing 11 fitting into the casing 6, is connected by hinges 12 at one side with the stationary frame, the members of the hinges being attached to the contiguous edges of the casings 6 and 11.
The door is formed with a window opening and provided with vertically sliding counter-weighted upper and lower glazed sashes 13 and 14, fitting and guided in ways formed by the usual inside and outside stops 15 and 16, and parting strips 17, attached to the stiles 7 and 8 and top rail 9. The window opening may extend from the top approximately the entire length of the swinging frame, or the lower part of the door may be permanently closed by a box panel 18, the window opening terminating at the bottom with a downwardlyand outwardly inclined window sill 19.
The stiles 7 and 8 and the top rail 9 of the swinging frame are spaced as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, from the jambs 1 and 2 and the top rail 3 of the stationary frame, to form recesses at the top and sides of the swinging frame when the door is closed, these recesses being closed on the inner and outer sides by the casings5, 6 and 11. The inner edges of the stiles 7 and 8 and top rail 9 of theswinging frame are overlapped by and abut against the inside casing 5, and the casing 11 at the lock side and top of the swinging frame, overlaps and abuts against the outer edges of the janib 1 and top rail 3 of the stationary frame, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, when the door is closed. a
y A weight box 20, which may be convenientlymade, as shown, of sheet metal rolled or pressed into channel form, is attached to the stile on the hinge side of the swinging frame, and is adapted. when the door is closed, to overlap and close the joint be tween the casings 6 and 11 on that side of the door, as shown in Fig. 3, and a double closure with a dead air space between, is thus provided at the sides and top of the door, to effectively exclude dust, rain, snow and cold air from the room or building into which the doorway opens.
Any suitable kind of lock or latch 21, is
building after the main or stationary frame is set in position.
I "claim:
1.. A combined door and window comprising a stationary frame having an outside 7 casing, an outwardly swinging frame fitting into and hinged at one side to the stationary -frameandhaving an outside casing fitting box 20, and each connected by a cord 23 - passingoverpulleys 24,25 and-26, with 013- posite sides .of a single-sash,'as-shown in Figs.'2, 4,5 and6. The pulleys'24, 25, and -26for each: sash, are'arranged in the-same vertical plane, the pulleys'25 and-26 project- -,ing:s1ightly above thetop'rail 9, and the a pulley, 24 being located in a-slot in the stile 8 ju'stbelow and a little farther toward the center of the door than theppulley 25.
To properly counterbalance the sashes, which vary insize and weight, 1 adjustable weights 22" are employed each Weight ,con-
sistingiassh'own in-Fig. 7, of ashell -or 25 receptacle 27, which may be conveniently made of sheet metal and filled to a'greater .-.or. less extent as required, with scrap metal :.or other loose, heavy-material.
' The shells. on receptacles are provided at the top with eyes orbails 28, through-which thesashcords 23- are looped, and they are preferably made of-squa-re cross section to g-prevent their :turning in the weight box and "twisting the V cord. The weight box 5 is provided, as shownin1Fig. 3,;with a 1 vertical partition 29, :to' prevent interference of the weightswi-theach other.
Towprevent the swinging framefromsagginger settling-and flthus interfering with witheproper operation-of the sashes: and; the -opening and closing of the -:'door, the base or bottom rail 10, is provided with a 'roller 30,
- -which workswith a'metalwear-plate iil let into the sill-4, as shown in FigsL-"Q-afid' 4. 4e 'iThe'construction" as herein shown and describedgprovides for the'applicationof a screen and storm window to the WlIldOW =open=in in -the usual way, a rabb'et or recess being ormed I by" the outside; casingj 11 and steps 16, "forthe 7 reception of "the: screen frame and storm sash.
' f'Tl-ie frames of the-combined door-"and wininto the outside casin of the stationary frame, and a weight box attached to the hinge stile of the swinging frame and adapted toolose over the joint between the outsideca'sings of said frames.
2.--A combined door and window compris- =ing a'stationary' frame having outside and inside casings an outwardly swinging frame 'fitting intoand hinged at one side to the stationary frame and adapted to close against the inside casing; a casing attached to the 'swinging' frame, fitting into the outside casing of the stationary frame and overlappingthe lock jainb and top rail of the stationary frame; and a weight box attached to the hinge stile of the swingmg frame and adapted to close into recess between the inside and-outside casings over the joint I between the outside casings.
3. A combined door and window comprising-astationary frame, an outwardly swinging frame hinged'at one side to the stationary'frame and spaced therefrom when closed at the sides and top, outside casings attached 1 to said frames and adapted to close the space i between them on the outer sidewhen the "door is closed, sliding sashes fitted and guided in the swinging fra1ne, 'which is provided; adjacenttothe' top of the. hinge side with two sash t-pulleys one above the -other and on theopposite side with a single sash: pulley all in the same vertical. plane 'forrasingle sash, acweight'box attached to the hinge stile of the swinging frame. and
adapted to'close into the space between the inside and outsidecasing over the joint between the outside casings onthatwside of the door, theswinging frame closing inwardly against and overlapping' the inside casing of the stationaryframe and the outside casing' of the swinging frame closing "against and overlapping the lock jamb and top rail of thestationary frame, and weights 'inclosed and-guided in said box and each connecte'd'byacordspassing over oneset of pulleysandacross 'the' top of the swinging -frameawithnopposite sides'of a'single sash.
