Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Nov. 19, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ROBERT A. VViLsoN, of Watertown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, and ALLEN P. WILSON, of WValtham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Pointers; and we do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part ofthe same, to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The invention relates to pencil pointers and has for its object to provide an imroved form of receptacle for receiving and holding the chips which are removed from the pencil in the sharpening operation.
One feature of the invention consists in providing a chip-receptacle which is removably mounted upon the pencil pointer in a novel manner, and is automatically locked in engagement therewit Another feature consists in providing the chip-receptacle with an adjustable chuck or pencil-holding device.
- Another feature consists in inclosing the chip-receptacleand providing such inclosed receptacle with a transparent portion.
To these ends the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and more particularly set forth in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of myv novel pencil pointer.

portions 17 and 18 elongated bearing 4: for the shaft of the cutter-carrier. The head-portion 3 is recessed and is provided with a series of internal gear'teeth 5, as shown in Fig. 4. The cutter-carrier 6 is provided with a shaft 7 journaled in the elongated bearing 4 and provided at one end with a handle 8 and at the other end ing portion 9. Mounted in the cutter-carrier 6 are two rotary cutters 10 having spiral cutting blades and provided at one end with gears arranged to mesh with the internal gear-teeth 5 in the head portion.
Mounted upon the head 3 is a chip-receptacle holder 11 which comprises a split body portion clamped upon said head 3 by a screw 12 mounted in lugs 13. Pivoted upon the screw 12 between the lugs 13 is a latch 14, which is constructed and arranged to normally rest in its closed position. Projecting from the holder 11 on opposite sides of the pencil-guide 9 are two rods 15 which serve as supports for the chip-receptacle 16.
Said chip-receptacle 16 consists of two end connected together by rods 19, mounted in lateral projections 20 upon opposite sides of each'of said end portions. Ea ch lateral projection 20 is provided with athole 21 extending through the same of such a size as to permit the rods 15 to slide freely therein. Said projections 20 are also provided with inwardly extending annular flanges 22, which are adapted to receive the ends'of the tubular rods 23, as shown in ig. 3. The inner surface of each of the end portions 11' and 18 is provided with a groove 21 extending completely I around the same and formed by turning over the edge 25. and providing a parallel wall 26, as shown in Fig. 6. Clamped between the end portionsl'? and 18, with its edges engaging the groove 24:, is a transparent oval casing or shell 27, which is preferably constructed of celluloid.
Mounted in a recess upon the inner surface of the end portion 17 is an adjustable chuck. or pencil-holder, which comprises a series of jaws 28 mounted to move across an opening 29 in alinement with the pencil guide 9, and arranged to be operated by a lever 30 extending through a slot 31 in the turnedover edge of the end portion 17. The
lever is adapted to be moved in one direcwith a tubular pencil-guich opposite direction automatically by means of the spring 32, shown in Fig. 6.
With the above construction it will be seen that the chip-receptacle 16 can be readily slid upon the rods 15 and that the latch 14 will be raised by the turned-over edge 25 to permit the same to pass thereunder, and that when said edge has passed thereunder, the latch Will fall by. gravityand engage said turned-over edge 25 and lock the chip receptacle 16 in engagement with the holder 11, as shown in Fig. 1. It will also be seen that the adjustable chuck will grip pencils of varying sizes and hold them in proper position during the sharpening operation, and that the transparent casing in the chip-receptacle will permit the operator to observe the sharpening operation and the amount of chips that have accumulated in the chip receptacle.
It will also be seen that the holder 11 can be readily turned about the head 3 so as to permit the standard 1 to be set in an upright or horizontal position as desired.
What ll claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a pencil pointer, the combination with a stand having a head, of a cuttercarrier, cutters journaled in said carrier, a holder adjustably mounted upon the head, a chip receptacle slidably mounted upon said .holder, and means for automatically locking said chip-receptacle in engagement With said holder as it is slid on the holder.
2. In a pencil pointer the combination With a stand having a head, of a cutter-carrier, cutters journaled in said carrier, a
mounted upon said projecting bars and locked in engagement with said holder by said latch.
3. In a pencil pointer the combination with a stand having a head, of a cutter-carrier, cutters journaled in said carrier, a holder mounted upon the head, a chipreceptacle mounted on said holder and a pencil holder upon the inside of said chip-receptacle. Y
4. In a pencil pointer the combination with a stand having a head, of a cutter carrier, cutters journaled in said carrier, a holder mounted upon the head, a chip receptacle mounted on said holder and an adjustable pencil holder upon the inside of said chipreceptacle.
5. In a pencil pointer the combination with a stand having a head, of a cutter carrier, cutters journaled in said carrier, a holder mounted upon the head, a chip receptacle mounted on said holder, said chip receptacle comprising a transparent casing having non-transparent end portions and an adjustable pencil holder mounted in one of said end portions.
