To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LAURA A. FRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at La Fayette, in the county of Tippecanoe and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hosiery, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in hosiery, and it is a purpose of my invention to provide stockings, socks, or the like which include a double foot portion to thus give greater ease and comfort to the wearer due to the fact that friction upon the foot will be reduced to a minimum, while at the same time the structure is such that the uniform color of the hose can be preserved throughout the entire exterior, while the inner foot portioncan be made of white yarn or other material which will offer greater comfort to tender feet.

A further object lies in forming the inner foot portion to be relatively slightly smaller than the outer foot portion to thus prevent wrinkling, and in so attaching and connecting the two portions that the inner foot portion is held against shifting bodily within the outer foot portion while at the same time free movement of the greater part of one portion with respect to the other is in no wise interfered with.

With the above and other objects in view,

which will be in part described and in part understood from the specification, drawings, and claim, my invention consistsin certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more A fully set forth.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a sectional view through the foot portion of a hose embodying my invention;

Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1;

Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing a slightly varied adaptation; and, Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.

In the main, the broad principle of my invention resides in providing an inner foot portion placed and mounted within the foot of a hose, or knitted therein, and the principal difference existing between the forms as disclosed in Figs. 1 and 3 is brought about by the fact that the hose disclosed in Fig. 1 is intended particularly for use with high shoes, whereas the hose shown in Fig.

'tially all 3 is primarily intended for wear with low shoes. In the disclosure in Fig. 1, the outer foot portion 1 is made substantially continuous with the leg portion 2 of the hose, and these portions are made or fashioned to have the proper form. An inner portion 3 is shaped to conform substantially to the shape of the outer foot portion 1, except that this inner foot portion is made slightly smaller to thus preclude the possibility of slackness, which would cause wrinkling, when the foot portion 3 is fitted within the foot portion 1. To connect the two foot portions together, the inner portion is knitted in or otherwise secured substantially around the line at 4:, and as this line of connection is brought well up on the ankle, to thus give the double thickness of material at substanoints where the shoe will bear, there is liability that the inner foot portion will draw up and thus become separated from the outer foot portion when the hose is being removed, and to guard against this possibility, it is perhaps preferable that the two portions be connected together by being woven" or in some other suitable manner, as is shown at 5. When this connection of the inner foot portion with the outer foot portion is established at 4 and 5, the shoe portions will be united at these places so that in the finishedhose they will be maintained at all times substantially as a single foot portion of double thickness, but due to the fact thatlimited movement of one foot portion with respect to the other is permitted, bearing friction of the shoe against the foot will be greatly reduced and the rubbing and burning effect upon the foot will be substantially if not entirely overcome. As is shown in Fig. 2, the inner foot portion is made to be slightly smaller in all of its dimensions than the other foot portion and thus it will be seen that the inner foot portion will stretch smoothly over the foot and binding of the foot or wrinkling of the inner foot portion will not be brought about by the outer foot portion due to the fact that the same is of sufficient size to guard against the exertion of undue drawing or bearing'strain upon any particular portion of the inner foot portion 3.

In the disclosure in Fig. 3, the inner foot portion 6 does not continue throughout the entire outer foot portion 7, but is made to come up only slightly over the toes and at the heel, these two foot portions being joined by being knitted or otherwise secured at 8. By forming the inner foot portion in the manner set forth, the sole and the sides of the foot where-the greatest bearing and friction from a low shoe occur will be of double thickness, whereas the remainder of the foot portion up over the instep will present but single thickness or the outer thickness 7, substantially as shown in Fig. 4.

From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a hose construction which permits of attaining the same and perhaps better results than could be had by wearing two pairs of hose or by wearing white or other hose feet under the stockings or socks, and also it will be seen that Where hosiery is manufactured after the manner of my invention it will be possible to use a white or unbleached foot portion next to the foot and then the outer structure of the hose can be continued in the same style and color throughout the leg and foot portion; also, that t e connection between the inner and outer foot portions is such that these portions will lie smoothly over the foot and that shifting or wrinkling of the inner foot portion will be guarded against.

While I have herein shown and described only certain specific constructions and arrangements, it will be understood that changes might be resorted to and hence I wish to be limited to only such points as may be set forth in the claim.

A stocking having a double foot portion, the innerv member being slightly smaller than the outer and conforming in shape thereto and separate therefrom, said inner member being united only around its top edge to the stocking and at the toe thereof, whereby a foot portion of double thickness will be provided of one portion of the foot in respect to the other permitted.
