1. B. CHEEKS. VALVE.

APPLICATION FILED NOV- 3,1917.

Patented ADI. 8,1919.

FEG.1

- 2 /Z 4f 6 s l I Z 8 FIG. 2 v 7 f V .L Y 8 T 3 f 8 "r State of Pennsylvania, and useful Improvement Valves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a: full,

Erica.

JOHN B. GHEEKS, F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ON E-HALF T0 HENRY l L. SCHUECK, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.

. VALVE.

b all whom it may concern:

citizen of the United States, and resident of of Allegheny and have invented a new Pittsburgh, in the county clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to valves, and more particularly to valves of a type 1n whlch a tapered: plug having a transverse opening is supported in a valve-chamber,

In the drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical secimproved valve; Fig. 2 is a tion of my view; Fig. 3 is a perspective bottom plan view of the plug plan view of said plug.

In the drawing, the numeral 2 designates a suitable shell or let 3 and the outlet 4..

A valve-plug 5 tapered in form is provided with the transverse opening 6, said valve-plug fitting within the tapered seat 7 of the valve-casing. At the bottom of the seat 7 are the oppositely arranged stops or abutments 8, which control the extent of movement of the valve-plug so that the operator can tell when the valve is in full open or closed position, and accordingly, said valve-plug is provided with the stud 9 which is adapted to engage the stops 8. It is apparent that the valve-plug may be inserted so as to operate in either of the spaces in its seat will be taken up by the downward movement of the valve into the tapered seat.

and arranged to be turned therein so as to bring said open- 1 metal.

removed; and Fig. 4 is a valve-body having the inp Patented Apr. 8, 1919.

' Application filed November 3, 1917. Serial No. 200,069.

valve-plug has a seat 11 formed therein to receive the hard-metal ring 12 formed of hardened steel or other suitable metal, and said ring has the lugs 13 fitting in correspondingly-shaped recesses in the valve-plug to hold the ring against rotation.

The valvebody has the internallythreaded neck portion 14 into which is screwed the cap 15, a'Jlock-washer 16 being provided to lock said adjusting devic securely in position. The cap 15 is preferably made intwo parts, the upper part 17 being formed of brass or metal of like quality, While the cone-shaped lower end 18 of said cap is formed of hardened steel or other like hard This cone-shaped portion 18 is secured to the upper portion 17 by screws 19; or, it may be connected in any other suitable manner.

The cone-shaped portion 18 of the cap 15 is tapered to form the space 20 for ackingwhere packing is employed; and urthermore, the lower edge 21 of said cone-shaped portion 18 is preferably rounded to present a rounded edge resting on the ring 12 whereby the friction is reduced and the turning of the valve-plug is more easily accomplished.

The valve-stem 22 passes up through the cap 15, a space 23 being provided to reduce the friction.

The cap 15 when screwed into. position, holds the valve-plug in firm position against its seat in the valve-body, and the hardened steel edge bearing on the hardened steel ring of the valve-plug will resist wear and increase the life of the valve. Furthermoreby simply tightening up on the adjusting device 15 any wear in the valve-plu will be taken up and it will be held secure y in its seat in the valve-body. This construction eliminates the necessity for packing under ordinary conditions, and will prevent leakage either through the valve or around its formed in said shell or body,

outside said shell, and said cap having an opening through which the valve-stem passes. 1 I

2. In a valve, the combination of a suitable shell or body having an inlet and outlet, a tapered valve-plug engaging a tapered seat an internallythreaded neck-portion on said shell or body,

and aring at its inner end against the top of said valve-plug and extending at its outer end outside the valve-body and said cap having an opening therein t rough which the valve-stem extends.

3. In a valve, the com'blnation of a valve shell or body having an inlet and outlet, a tapered valve-plug engaging a tapered seat formed in said valve body, a cap engaging" a threaded opening in said valve body, said cap having a conical inner end portion engaging the top of said valve-plug, and said cap having an ope ng through which the valve-stem asses.

4. In a va ve, the comblnation of a shell or I body having an inlet and outlet, a tapered valve-plug engaging a tapered seat in saidvalve-body a cap engaging a threaded opening in said valve-body, the inner endof said cap having a rounded e'dge engaging the upper end of said valve-plug and havingl an opening extending through it for the va vestem.

5.- In a valve, the combination of a valvea cap engaging said threaded neck-portion shell or body having an inlet and outlet, a tapered valve-plug engaging a tapered seat in said valve-body, a ca engaging an opening in said valve-body, t e inner end of said cap having a hardened metal cone portion engaging the upper end of said valve-plug, said ca having an o ening through which the va ve-stem exten s.

6. In a valve, the combination of a shell or valve-body having an inlet and outlet, a

tapered valve-plug engaging a tapered seat in said valve-body, a ring of hard metal in the top of said valve-plug, and a cap engaging an opening in said valve-body having its inner endbearing on said ring, and said cap engaging said ring, and said cap having an opeging through which the valve-stem exten s. t

In testimony whereof I, the said JOHN B. CHEEKS, have hereunto set my hand.

JOHN B. GHEEKS.
