Be it known that I, EUGENE L. SANBQRN, a citizen of the United States, residing at ltlilwaukee. in the county of lVIilwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Crushing- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gyratory crusheis and has for one object to simplify the gyratory crusher. Another object is to provide means whereby the position of the crushing head in the hopper may be adjusted with a minimum of difiiculty in order to compensate r'or wear or change of adjustment. Another object is to provide a crushing machine wherein there will be a minimum number of places where clearance must be left in the line of crushing pressure.
In the past it has been proposed to use a crushing machine of general type wherein the rotating eccentric sleeve was surrounded by a cylindrical sleeve and wherein the crushing head is slidably mounted upon the cylindrical sleeve. In order that the crushing head may move longitudinally along the sleeve clearance must be left. Experience shows that when you use a type of machine wherein there are a number of loose fits in direct line with the crushing pressure a pounding or hammering will develop which results in battering or peening the head liner which thus wears larger than the bore. worse and before long the whole bearing is battered to pieces. By eliminating one of the loose fits this pounding is minimized.
In my device I make the cylindrical sleeve and the crushing head integral thus doing away with the clearance and stifi'ening the parts without increase in weight. I protect the eccentric sleeve by carrying an integral extension down from the crushing head into the oiling chamber and putting the crushing head into engagement with the eccentric sleeve only throughout an intermediate part of its length so that there is room for upward or downward adjustment of the cruslr ing head with respect to the eccentric sleeve without decreasing the bearing surface oft sleeve or head.

A is a crushing hopper mounted on a base A and provided on its interior with a crushing lining A the whole being mounted upon a foundation A. A is a. lower spider secured to the base and in this instance integral with the base of the crusher and adapted to carry the central shaft A which is secured to it and supported at its upper end by the upper spider A which is integral with the feed hopper A secured to the crushing hopper A by the bolts A.
B is a drivin shaft upon which is mounted the belt pu ley B adapted to be driven by any suitable source'of power not here shown. 13%, is a miter pinion on the shaft B rotating in the oil pocket B. It is in mesh with the miter gear B on the eccentric sleeve B which in turn is mounted for rotation upon the fixed central shaft A and is supported at its lower end upon the thrust bearing B.
C is a crushing head floating upon the eccentric sleeve B and in rotatable relation therewith. -It is adjustably supported upon the ring C by the adjusting screws C This ring C is slidably supported on a bearing ring' C provided with a packing washer C and having inclined oil and dust scraping edges as indicated. This bearing ring C is supported on the spider A and forms with the ring C and the cylindrical extension C extending downwardly from the crushing head the upper boundary of an oil chamber in which most of the working parts are con tained. This bearing plate C isheld against. rotation on the spider and the walls of the oil chamber by means of pins C. C is a resistant crushing shell preferably removable and made of manganese or similar durable material. It may or may not be corrugated or folded. If it is removable on the crushing head as indicated it will be held in position thereupon by means of a holding bolt C engaging lugs C on the shell and drawn up by means of nuts C engaging shells C on the head. Under some circumstances this shell could be made integral with the crushing head by merely chilling the outer surface of the casting. Under ordinary circumstances, however, on high duty work the manganese shell is preferable because it lends itself more readily to renewal. If the manganese shell is dispensed with the crushing head is cast solid so that its outer shape is the-same as that of the manganese shell.

Oil forced through this system finally comes; out into the groove D and moves up and down the central shaft lubricating the bearing of the eccentric on the shaft. D is a passage through the eccentric always in register with the groove D whereby the hearing between the eccentric and the crushing head may always be lubricated. Any oil which passes up on the inside of the eccentric will pass over the top'and down to the chamber D formed betweenv the packing ring D and the top of the crushing head. This packing ring D s'lidably engages a packing surface- D on the upper portion of the crushing head so as to make a sub stantially oii tight joint. The pressure is exerted uponthis packing ring to assist in the oil tightness of this joint by means of the screw D which completes a. firm seating of the packing ring on the upper end of the crushing head. The oil which passes down both outside and inside the eccentric sleeve passes finally into the oil chamber at the base ofv the sleeve. The oilinside the sleeve passes out and lubricates the thrust bearing supporting the eccentric. All the oil joins to lubricate the miter gear and pinion and then runs off through the pipe D to the reservoir D The bearings'E E in which the driving shaft B rotates are oiled by an oil duct branching off from the pipe D discharging into the chamber E between the bearings. Thence the oil works both ways, some of it in the oiling chamber B at the foot of the eccentric sleeve and also some of it in the chamber E where the miter pinion E on the shaft B drives the miter gear E on a pump shaft E whereby the pump driving mechanism is kept lubricated. Thence the oil returns by means of the pi )e E to the pipe I)" and thence to the reservoir.
The use and operation of my invention are as follows:-
The material to be crushed is fed into the crusher through the feed hopper from above and passes into the crushing hopper where it is crushed by the gyration of the crush ing head. The crushed material as it lee-- comes small enough falls out at. the bottom through the aperture between the crushing head and the hopper walls. Thisaperture may be kept of uniform size as the crushing head or the crushing walls, wear, by raising the crushing apron by means of the adjustable nuts provided for that purpose, or the same adjustment may be to provide a change in the size of product; making the aperture smaller will result in finer crushing and making it larger will result in larger crushing, the material being allowed to pass from the machine as soon asit is of a size small enough to pass through the aperture.
The sleeve extending downwardly from the crushing head passes through the supporting ring as indicated and oil is kept in and dust is kept out by means of the packing between the sleeve and the ring whereby the crushing head is free to move up and down when the adjusting screws are ma nipulated without exposing the eccentric sleeve and without making it possible for oil to escape from or dust enter into the oiling chambcr.
I claim 1. A crushing machine comprising a hop per, a central shaft, an eccentric sleeve mounted for rotation thereon a crushing head floating on and in rotatable relation with the eccentric, means for moving the head bodily on the eccentric to adjust the relation between the head and the hopper said means comprising a supporting ring removed from the sleeve on which the cruslr ing head rides, a thrust bearing upon which it slidably rests and adjusting screws be tween it and the head.

A gyratory crushing machine comprisiiig a hopper a fixed central shaft an eccentric sleeve surrounding the shaft means for drivingthe sleeve a crusher head surrounding the eccentric sleeve in direct engagement therewith and an annular ring mounted for gyration with the head, adjustable head supporting means interposed between the annular ring and the head.
6. A crushing machine comprising a hopper, a central shaft, an eccentric sleeve mounted for rotation thereon a crushing head floating on and in rotatable relation with the eccentric, means independent of the shaft and of the eccentric sleeve for adjustably supporting the crushing head, said means comprisingadjusting screws supported on an annular ring mounted for gyration with the head.
7. A crushing machine comprising a hopper, a central shaft, an eccentric sleeve mounted for rotation thereon a crushing head floating on and in rotatable relation with the eccentric, means independent of the shaft and of the eccentric sleeve for adjustably supporting the crushing head said means comprising adjusting screws supported on an annular ring mounted for gyration with the head, and a thrust bearing adapted to support the annular ring.
8. The combination with a gyratory crushing head for crushing machines and the like of a central shaft within the head an eccentric sleeve mounted for rotation about the shaft and within the head, means for rotating the sleeve, an oil chamber in which such means the lower end of the sleeve and the lower end of the crushing head are all contained packing means for maintaining such chamber constantly closed and an oil closure at the upper end of the crushing head containing the upper end of the sleeve the upper end of the crushing head and a portion of the central shaft.
9. In a crushing machine comprising a hopper a central shaft and means for sup porting it, an eccentricsleeve mounted for rotation thereon, a crushing head floating directly on and in rotatable adjustable relation with the eccentric, an oil chamber about the lower end of the shaft, inclosing the lower end of the eccentric sleeve, a ring adapted to support the crushing head, said ring closing the top of the oil chamber, the

In a crushing machine comprising a hopper a central shaft and means for supporting it, an eccentric sleeve mounted for rotation thereon, a crushing head rotatably and adjustably mounted on the eccentric, an oil chamber about the lower end of the shaft, inclosing the lower end of the eccentric sleeve, a ring adapted to support the crush ing head, in part closing the top of the chamber, thrust bearing between such ring and the chamber wall, the crushing head having a. depending flange of uniform diameter, said flange adapted adjustably to penetrate the top of the'oil chamber.

In a crushing machine comprising a hopper a central shaft and means for supporting it, an eccentric sleeve mounted for rotation thereon, a crushing head rotatahly and adjustably mounted on the eccentric, an oil chamber about the lower end of the shaft, inclosing the lower end of the eccentric sleeve driving means for said eccentric inclosed within the oil chamber, a ring adaptedto support the crushing head, in part closing the top of the chamber, a thrust bearing between such ring and the chamber wall, the crushing head having a depending flange of uniform diameter, said flange adapted to penetrate the top of the oil chamber, an oil chamber about the upper end of the shaft, adapted to contain the upper end of the eccentric sleeve, an oil closure about said oil chamber engaging the top of the crushing head and adjustable therewith.

oil chamber about the lower end of the shaft, inclosing the lower end of the eccentric sleeve, driving means for said eccentricinclosed. within the oil chamber, a ringadapted to support the crushing head, in part closing the top of the chamber, a thrust bearing between such ring and the chamber wall, the crushing head having a depending flange of uniform diameter, said flange adapted to penetrate the top of the oil chamber, an oil chamber about the upper end of the shaft, adapted to contain the upper end of the eccentric sleeve, an oil closure about said oil chamber engaging the top of the crushing head and adjustable therewith and in telescopic engagement with the roof of said oil chamber.

Ina crushing machine comprising a hopper a central shaft, means for sup orting it, a crushing head mounted on the s iaft, an oil chamber about the lower end ofthe shaft inclosing the lower end of'the crush-- ing head, a ring adapted to support the crushing head, said ring closing the top of said oil chamber- 16. In a crushing machine comprising a hopper a central shaft, means for supporting it, a crushing head mounted on the shaft, an oil chamber about the lower end of the shaft inc-losing the lower end of the crush ing head,- a ring adapted to support the crushing head, said ring closing the top of said oil chamber, the lower edge of the crushing head adapted to penetrate the oil chambe.
IL-In a crushing machine comprising a hopper a central shaft, means for supporting it, a crushing head mounted on the shaft,
an oil' chamber about thelewer end of the shaft inclosingthe lower endof the crushing head, a ring adapted to support the crushing head, said ring'inclosing a part of the chamber, a thrust,bearing* between such eeann ring and the chamber wall, a crushing head having a depending flange adapted to penetrate the top of the oil chamber.

In a crushing machine comprising a hopper a central shaft, means for supporting it, a crushing head mounted on the shaft, an oil chamber about the lower end of the shaft inclosing the lower end of the crushing head, a ring adapted to support the crushing head, said ring inclosing a part of the chamber, a thrust bearing between such ring and the chamber wall, a crushing head having a depending flange adapted adjustably to penetrate the top of the oil chamber.-
19. In a crushing machine having a hopper a central shaft and means for supportlng it, a crushing head rotatably and adjustably mounted, an oil chamber about the upper end of the shaft, and an oil closure about said oil chamber engaging the top of the crushing head and adjustable therewith.
20. In a crushing machine a hopper a central shaft andmeans for supporting it, a crushing head rotatably and adjustably mounted thereon, an oil chamber about the upper end of the shaft, an oil closure about said oilchamberengaging the top of the crushing head and the roof of the oil chamher and adjustable with the crushing head.
21. In a crushing machine a hopper a central shaft and means for supporting it, a
crushing head rotatably and adjustably mounted thereon, an oil chamber about the upper end of the shaft, an oil closure about said oil chamber engaging the-top of the crushing head and the roof of the oil chamber and adjustable with the crushing head with means for preventing the opening of such oil chamber by such adjustment.
